What just Happened?
I've had good and bad trading experiences with CMs. I've run into several who never refreshed their lanyards (one who told me he didn't because Disney didn't pay him for his time to do it) but were pin collectors themselves. I had one in AK pull out his own stash and trade a ton with me when he saw my lanyards. His own lanyard was pretty pitiful looking. I thought it was odd but my guess was that he probably pulled any good pins that came in on his lanyard.
I'm sorry to hear that Disney pulled the tables at Epcot again but I'm not surprised. There are several 'regulars' who are mostly winter traders who tend to be high-pressure, "THIS pin is very rate", kind of folks. Maybe they're trying to send a message to those folks and to also keep the holidays nicer for the casual buyer/collector and kids. I've dealt with many of them over the years and it does kinda get old. I almost never trade with any of them because they want so much for pins that aren't terribly rare or unusual (of course they are rarer and more unusual than my comparable pins of similar age, LE, etc).I remember one a few years ago who quoted $50 ebay values for every single pin I expressed any interest in. She took me for a beginner and I never said anything to let her know otherwise.
During my recent trip, a few cast members had the backwards pins. The first time I saw a CM with this, I tried turning her lanyard around since I thought it had accidentally turned over and she stopped me saying they were mystery pins and I had no idea what she was talking about. Another cast member was putting a pin on her lanyard and I happened to be looking at her and she was turning the lanyard around to put a pin on it. The pin that was a mystery wasn't anything special and I think was just a rack pin.
Hahahaha thought this was an appropriate reaction to the subject of CMs pocketing pins. In my humble opinion, CMs already get access to Company D where they can buy special CM only pins and pins at discount so to take off the trading lanyards that are for guest trading isn't really fair in my opinion but I won't judge. As some have said, there's a possibility that she pocketed the pin and later replaced it with something else/replenished her lanyard, so hopefully that was the case. Also, I think the CMs that pocket pins for their own collections are in the minority. I would hope that not too many CMs do this solely because usually the CM lanyards are so bogged down by scrappers lately that it'd be nice if authentic pins that do make it into the parks for trading had a chance to reach guests instead of winding up in the pocket of a CM (especially rack pins) right away.
