Okay, I don't have much of a collection, really... I have a pin... and plan to get more and trade when I get to Walt Disney World (hopefully next June).

So, what should I collect? Any suggestions? My daughters will be collecting too (er, I mean it's all for them, really). Should I recommend they try to collect something specific, or just leave them to trade for whatever they see that they like?

Hey Dyllan, I am pretty new to pin trading as well. What I did was to collect all the pins I liked at first. After a while I started to obtain certain pins that people wanted and then I would trade them those pins for certain ones that I later became fond of (Stitch!).

I personally think it's best to find a general theme or character to start off with. When I first started pin trading I collected Peter Pan and Briar Rose, which later grew to all Princesses, Mulan, Cats and Hercules. But if it's for your kids, let them go crazy with whatever they like, and they will have fun. :)

Hmmm, choosing a character I like would be a bit tough. There are so many good choices.

Hey, are there many muppets pins out there? Maybe I should collect those. Although, they weren't originally Disney, they are now, so...

If you want to see what's around, surf on over to pinpics.com, click on Search (on the left side), check the box for Disney Pins, and then put in a search term on the search page...repeat for different characters or themes. There are also collections of pins in groups that you can look over.

collect what interests you the most whether its a favorite character or ride>
I collect alot of disney baseball themed pins as I am a big baseball fan then i expanded into pins that interested me
I also collect Disney transportation particulaly buses for my dad
Goofy for my mom

I agree with just collecting what you like first. Don't stick to a specific theme or character. As you collect the ones you like you will find yourself reevaluating your collection and may choose to trade some out and and focus more on others.
I am kind of all over the place in my collections but have focused a bit here and there. I still mostly collect pins that put a smile on my face and I am happy with it.

I would say a favorite character, movie, ride, or activity (fishing, for example)...

Who are your daughter's favorite characters? Or what is their favorite movie(s). May be a good starting point.
My daughter is way too young to have an oPINion, but she really enjoys watching Finding Nemo, so we bought her some Nemo pins last trip.

The most important thing is to have fun, and remember, you can always trade away pins if you decide they aren't what you want anymore. :)

Collect what you like. For me its Stitch, Belle, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Nightmare. Those are the main ones I'm doing. The rest of the pins that I have are just random pins. I have some that are Star Wars, couple Up Grape soda pins and bunch of others. So it is all about what you like and what it easy to get. You can go over to pinpics.com and find the ones that you like and you can even trade with people on the site. That is what I'm doing to get some that are older pins.

Edit: Also trade with cast members and get ones that everyone wants because they are more willing to trade with you. Lot of people are looking for the letters. I got a lot of people asking me if I had them when I went last week. I'm starting to think of getting some letters to trade. Also some people like the vinalmation (sp?) pins and also the dolls.

We like collecting the Hidden Mickeys because it's fun when at the parks to try and find them on the cast members and in the mystery pouches. Also gives us sets to focus on completing and a feeling of accomplishment when they're finished.

Hidden Mickey PM sent, and Dyllan,a favorite ride would be a good idea, maybe resort pins...anything like that would be good to collect as well

I wish I would have asked this question when I first started. I wasted time collecting Open Edition/Rack pins/Cast Member pins and I feel like I spent sooo much money on them before I really knew what was out there. Don't get me wrong, if you like OE/Rack Pins/Cast Member pins then thats awesome and purchase away. My suggestion is to look on pinpics with a favorite character/attraction in mind, and browse thru the pins. When I started out, I wasn't willing to spend too much on pins and bought $10-15 open editions all the time instead of dishing out another $10-20 to buy the rarer Disney Auction pins/Limited Edition pins. Now I have a bunch of OE pins that aren't really good traders and I don't like as much as my LE pins. Get your feet wet before jumping in. Know which pins have a high return rate so if you ever do decide to sell some you can at least make your money back.

Hope this helps, but just know at the end of the day its your money and your collection- collect whatever you like as long as it makes you happy. The advice above was just a headsup :)

IMO, when it comes to your collection, you should collect pins that you love and that make you happy. I think you should look at your collection and smile because you love it so much.

That being said, I *strongly* recommend that you select a character or theme (or maybe a few characters/themes, depending upon what you choose) to collect to keep your collection under control (advice I dearly wish I had been given when I started collecting pins). If you start collecting everything that you like that happens to be a shiny piece of metal with a pointy back attached, you'll find that your collection has grown out of hand and you have a third mortgage on your house before you know it.

I started with Elliott. He's my favorite Disney character. Then, I moved on to Lady and the Tramp. After that, it was the quest for all of the HM monorail pins (I have them all). I have many full sets of CL/HM pins. Then again, I started collecting in 1996 and trading in 1999. Right now, I'm on the hunt to complete the 2011 trash can series. Wish me luck!

My wife and I started collecting Hidden Mickey pins in April. We now have over 200 pins! We're obsessed. Luckily we live 35 mintues from DLR. I got a cool Grand Californian Expansion Team pin from a cast member on one of our first pin trading trips and we stayed at the Grand Californian our wedding night so I started collecting those too. I like Star Wars so we collect whatever we can find. My wife likes the Nerds stuff they sell now so she's on the hunt for the complete Nerds sets.

It can be tough to pick a theme to collect. Like everyone else said, pick something that makes you happy! I mainly collect Chip and Dale, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Villains. I am currently working on an Up, Beauty and the Beast, and Cheshire Cat collection.
My advice is to pick a few themes, or a couple to say the least. Don't cut yourself off from some awesome pins! :D

Hope this helps :)

I know everyone says to collect what you like, but if you aren't careful, you can wind up like me with almost 4,000 pins and running out of room. I started with the "old" Disney characters and then went to Princesses, then movies I liked and finally settled on Alice. But I still love the pins I started out with. It's a wonderful hobby and I love it. It's great to share with your kids, grandkids, friends, and even total strangers. I've made more friends by wearing my sweater with Disney pins on it than any other way. Good luck.
