FROZEN, THE NEW TANGLED?

Aloha DPF!

So a few members and I have discussed this topic. With the new pins being leaked, and in some cases released already, there has been speculation to the potential popularity of these pins.

Before we dive into the discussion I would like to just ask to respect everyone's opinions and to not attack one another if you do not agree with a certain statement.

So far we know that Frozen will have characters such as:

  1. [*=left]Anna (the princess)
    [*=left]Elsa (the potential villain)
    [*=left]Hans (a Prince?
    [*=left]Kristoff ( a prince as well?)
    [*=left]Olaf (Sidekick 1)
    [*=left]Siva the reindeer/elk (Sidekick 2)

In tangled we see a similar dynamic with characters mirroring Frozen. Without diving too much into the film and focusing on the pins:

What do you think will happen with Frozen from a collectors stand point and a trading point of view?

Do you already find a connection with certain characters?

How would you compare the popularity of Tangled pin to the few Frozen pins announced?

Will this be another Brave hype?

Which pins are you most looking forward to or hoping Disney/GSF releases?

Feel free to add anything to the discussion including facts of the film other informative things to shape the discussion. Also, please give me the reason you think/know why you will start collecting Frozen.

Oh no, I sense a 'Tangled Vs. Frozen' battle! But in all seriousness... I think Frozen will be the next big thing in the Disney world. I also think I'll prefer it over Tangled. Of course it won't take the place of my favourite Disney movie.

Depends on how good the story is. Brave had a shot being the first Pixar princess but the storyline was terribly choppy and kind of fell flat. This movie has it all, Princess, Villain princess, funny/cute Sidekick, Horse-like sidekick, Prince(s). So it has something for everyone. We just have to wait and see if people connect with it. People like Blondes, Rapunzel had an ace in the hole. She was also that free spirit, cute and funny. These princesses are like white haired and red / auburn haired and we have to wait to see how their personalities are. The princesses will make or break this movie. I've seen so little of them and all of Olaf, but from D23 previews and other snippets I feel like Olaf is very little of the film and the princess duality is the bigger story. So the opening day pin with Olaf I think will fall flat in the end. We'll see.

I will collect Frozen simply because its the first princess movie that I can take my daughter to see. Also, her name is Anna (pronounced On-ah) just like the character, so I cant wait to see her little face when they start saying "her" name in the movie. seriously, Im giddy about it.

I also like the look of the movie. It looks beautiful and kind of reminds me of an the background art of Sleeping Beauty, in that its grand and sweeping.

I agree. Maybe olaf was put on the opening day pin on purpose. Maybe olaf's character wasn't shown as much because his role in the movie is crucial to the ending or something like that.

Heck no it won't be the next tangled because I didn't think Tangled was all that great. I know, start the boos and hissing. It looks to be the next Brave which was wonderful!!!

This movie isnt Pixar.

I didn't say it was. I said Brave had potential being the first pixar movie with a princess, but in the end it was a crappy story, the side kick brothers were only relevant and funny for like .2 seconds, they showed the all the good stuff in the preview, the horse didn't talk, they kind of left the ending botched, the story jumped and left holes...anything else? Visually it was great.

When it comes down to the popularity of the merchandise, I say yes, Frozen will be the new Tangled. Any comparison between the movies is hard to do right now. But look at the craze hitting people with Frozen pins. Better start saving money folks.

Disney movies tend towards similarities all the time... they use a group of characters for each movie that have similar attitudes, feelings or issues. tried tested and true, these characters Sell the movie and keep people coming back.

In the appearance department...
Frozen: Anna
Tangled: Rapunzel
Frozen: Elsa
Tinkerbell: Perwinkle
And do we even NEED to compair the guys in Frozen to Flynn for looks????

behaviors in all disney movies...:

  • Achilles (HoND), Maximus (Tangled), the Reindeer (frozen) all behave like DOGS, and have very similar personalities.
  • The females always have some hang up, issue or problem that they get over.
  • They guys are quite often diamonds in the rough.

All disney movies, the villain looses. In many movies, if you go into backstory the villain is someone who didnt used to be evil, but went that way because something horrible happened, or they were misunderstood or didnt have a choice in the matter.

A good childrens story these days has: a hero (boy or girl) sidekicks, villain, morals to the story. Theres only so many ways to shape the cookie. It has to appeal to the general public.

Most people are geared up to collect Frozen pins and a lot of people seem bent on becoming Frozen completists whereas with Tangled, most folks were late to the party and not collecting from the beginning hence the bloated pin prices for opening day Tangled and other early releases. If every collector gets their hands on an opening day Frozen pin, there isn't much value to that, is there? Also, there is more of a challenge to collecting Tangled vs chasing after each upcoming Frozen pin being released which makes collecting a little boring unless you're completely obsessed with Frozen... which seems to be only two or three people I know.

Also, Disney chose to release this film closer to winter (and the holiday season) where the whole ice/snow theme of the movie makes it more seasonal and Tangled doesn't seem to have that problem.

In the end, the blonde chick always seems to come out on top so no, I don't think Frozen will be the new Tangled.

Oh, and although she appears to be an evil princess, I don't think she's a villain at all. But I think we may have some surprises as to who the antagonist of the movie really is. Or at least I hope we do.

I wrote a novel on how I think this will go but the forum deleted it after I hit "Post" Grr, stupid new format doesnt' work well on my laptop.

In summation, It will be better than Brave in the long run, worse than Tangled, somewhere near WIR which means it won't take off until after the DVD comes out and kids bug their parents forever and ever to buy them Frozen stuff. WIR was in a lull until the DVD came out. Brave was super hot and then died because the movie wasn't so hot. Tangled didn't really fly off the handle until we got pins like the Paris PTN, Marquee sold for $400 in 4/2012, the R/C Girl went insane and the PODM's came out 5/2012. Then everyone decided to start doing Tangled. DSF Tangled pins made it to the sale bin, just think about that.

So Frozen will spike at release, then die for a few months and values will come down, then spike again with the DVD release and kids wanting Frozen stuff. My stock tip is buy, hold, wait.

Great analyses/observations! I really do think there's something behind olaf. Maybe an undiscovered prince or a villain. Looks can be deceiving.

I don't care if prices for frozen pins never spike. Good! I'm completely in love with every aspect of this movie and happy if it never blows up like tangled did. I collect tangled but I started before the surge in popularity...so I luckily acquired harder pins early on. I collect brave love brave to death and could care less that other people don't like it. Makes it easier for me. I own all the pins except for that forever allusive elinor pendant. And I will collect frozen whether or not it becomes popular stays popular or everyone hates it cause it's "winter tangled" psshhh. That's what seperated true collectors from pin collectors that do it for bragging rights cause they want to be able to say I own this popular/ expensive pin. Who cares? You like it collect it...you don't like it well okay saves you money right?
