OK, I was wondering about a couple of situations that I have noticed in the Trade Auctions sub-forum; as I had time to think this morning and thought I would pose the question to everyone here

1) If you have an auction up and running, do you still try and offer that pin via PinPics via the TA? I had a trade request this morning that I saw as a current trade auction yesterday, and while they could have 2 or more of the pin, it struck me as kind of odd.

2) If you are bidding with specific pins, do you set them aside and do not accept/attempt trades via PinPics until either the auction is over or it is declared you are not the leader? I ask as I sat on some pins (did not attempt trading) as I was in the lead until last night on an auction, and while I gave it my all, I wonder does every one else thought the same way. What happens if you have them in a bid, and you get a trade offer too good to pass up? Do you contact the auctioneer?

3) Should we/Do you allow people to bid with pins not in their possession yet? I have noticed a trend with people bidding with pins that are scheduled to be released, like the PODM Little Mermaid and the DSF Brave Pins. Speaking as someone who "pre-traded" for both the Tangled and Aladdin PODMs and did not get either due to circumstances beyond everyone's control, is bidding with pins not in your possession a good idea? What happens if the person wins and is unable to get the pins?

Just my $.02

You raise some good thought provoking questions. with regards to point #2. I ran an auction and had someone officially withdraw their bid. I personally had no problem with that because it was before the auction ended. With regards to #3, I would set it up in my auction rules to not have "pre-trade" bidding allowed for the very reason you pointed out. if the person running the auction is looking for yet to be released pins, then he/she should be allowed to allow those offers. If the person who bids them is unable to deliver, then there are problems. is the person then obliged to deliver to the 2nd place person? will the auction be over and the person just keeps their pin as if it never happened?

1). Once a pin is in play, it should be set aside and reserved.

2). Same as above

3). A bid being placed should be in your possession UNLESS you have spoken with the person who is doing the auction, and they agree.

I do not agree with someone removing their bids! This should not be allowed! Once a bid is taken it is in play.

Just my penny worth!

it seems to me that your first two questions are more of ethics than procedure.
is it right? Of course it is,
We all know you should put the auction pins outa circulation till either
A> you auction off the piece if you are the auctioneer
B> you dont have to worry about trading the piece bid <if you are the bidder who suddenly finds themselves the bridesmaid not the bride>

Are there unscrupulous people who do things they know they shouldnt either out of greed or arraogance?
Of course there are!!

Now as to q#3, Should we allow it?, I think that depends on the autioneer,Would you want me telling you what you can and cannot accept as a bid? so if you do not wish to honor those bids you can either say so in your rules or you can not chose to award them the winning bid, pretty simple.
Likewise if you bid on a nonexsistant pin you takes you chances,

Caveat Emptor<remember Greg and the Brady bunch episode?>

Unfortunately we cannot be eveyones caretaker, just as in any auction, you pays you money you takes you chances both as a trader and a bidder.

yeah i was a latin geek before a pin geek, sue me!!!

with regard to Questions #1 and #2, that's up to the individual.

To answer #3, I don't think pins should be offered for auction unless the pin is in that person's possession. If something arises and the person is unable to get their hands on the pin that is up for auction, then all that they've done is waste everyone's time. I will make sure the rules are updated to address this.

You are right, a person should not auction what they do not own, Bill's question was about using a pre trade as a bid. I know for instance that there will be a time when I cannot make a release that I want to because life happens. Should I not be allowed to take a pre trade offer for a pin I really want, but cannot otherwise get? It should be AUctioneers choice to allow/disallow pre trade bids IMO.

Awesome ponderings Bill.

1. Nuh-uh, not good etiquette.

2. Ideally, once a bid is placed, those pins should be reserved until the auction ends or at least if the committed pins are not in top three - even then the auctioneer reserves the right to change his/her mind later. Bid retractions are not desired, but hopefully the forum leaders will set clearer rules about that and once those rules are announced, bidders should abide by them.

3. I would feel more comfortable with actual trades instead of pre-trades but that can be discussed by the two parties or once again DPF leaders announce their rules regarding this.

I hold to my comment earlier that if you are not one of the leaders after the auctioneer announces leaders then your offered pins should be free to be offered elsewhere. They had their chance to make you a leader and lock in your bid. I can't offer a pin in a 2 week auction, have no shot, and then just keep that pin aside the whole time. That's not fair.

I totally agree with this quote. If I'm not even in the top three I definitely wouldn't want my pins tied up in this auction until it ends. Bid retractions should be allowed if you are not in the top 3 in my opinion. I also think it is very important that the person auctioning the pins update their top 3 at least on a daily basis.

ah; then i misunderstood the question.

in that case, I think the answers to all three questions are really up to the individual (or individuals) involved in the auction.

I actually meant using a pin not in your possession, such as an upcoming release, as a bid. I used the Pre-Trades I lost as an example, as I went into those eyes wide open that things like that could happen so while disappointed, no harm no foul; but using the same model, if someone used a Tangled PODM as a bid before their release, and was unable to get one, what happens?

I think this makes the most sense, since you are expected to "pay" in a timely fashion, plus as Cicada said, what happens if the bidder is unable to get the pin for whatever reason, i.e. sold out before they got there, sick that day, etc.

All I know is if I place a pin bid on an auction and then the person comes back and says no I traded it instead, I will leave negative feedback.

The point of an auction is a promise that someone will win, and pins will be exchanged.

I just used the term "pre-trade bid" to encompass that. If an auctioneer is willing to gamble and award the win to a bid with an upcoming release, then They should set forth in their auction rules as to what will happen if the winner is unable to fulfill their obligation. They can contact the 2nd and 3rd place people, but understand that those people might have turned around and used their bid pins in another trade after learning they were not going to win

I think if everyone is clear that failure to complete a Trade Auction if you are either the auctioneer or the winning bidder will result in negative feedback, should take care of these type of issues.

If someone offers a pre-trade and can't get it, then they can look to the secondary market and have it sent directly to the auctioneer. There should be no acceptable excuses for backing out: "I had to work," "I got sick," "They sold out," etc.

agreed. A negative feedback because of a failure to follow through from EITHER party, is warranted.

Hi,

1) If the person running the Auction has more than 1 than not a problem, otherwise I would say that pin is locked into the auction until it ends , the new rules state an auction cannot be finished early , so the pin is locked for the whole auction and cannot be traded.

2) Again if the bidder has more than 1, I see no reason why they cannot continue to trade it on Pinpics or the DPF trade. If they are NOT one of the THREE
leaders again I do not see why they cannot trade the pin, as the leaders cannot remove there pins they will always be ahead of the bidder (hope that makes sense)

3) I feel the bidder should always have the pin in there possession , what if they win the auction and they than cannot make it to the release the following day?

Question:- Can the person running the Auction make a "Second Chance" to the bidder who was second , eBay allow's this , when the OP/seller has more than 1 of the item or the winner of the auction drops out (for whatever reason).

my thoughts are in green below....

1) If you have an auction up and running, do you still try and offer that pin via PinPics via the TA? I had a trade request this morning that I saw as a current trade auction yesterday, and while they could have 2 or more of the pin, it struck me as kind of odd. I keep it on my pinpics trade list until the auction is done. It allows me easy reference. But if I recieve a Trade request while it is up for auction, obviously it is a negative reply. See, what happens if by chance no-one bids? I dont delete those Trade requests until there is a bid on my auction pin.

As a bidder: I set my bid pins aside and do NOT offer them to anyone else until I am no longer in the running. I will NOT accept a trade request, no matter how good until I am no longer in the top 3. as the auctioneer, if someone were to "pull" their bid midway through the auction, I would want there to be a darn good reason., like maybe it may be a scrapper or something. Otherwise, I may not take your bids seriously in future auctions.

What happens if the person wins and is unable to get the pins? heck, if you know for sure your going to have a new release pin, bid away. I would cinsider it. But if you win you better be able to make good that bid. lol Trade for it, beg borrow steal for it. You commited to the trade by bidding.
