I just started buying pins last month for both my collection and for trading. I spent WAY too much money last month! This past Friday night (10/5) I decided that I should probably set up an allowance of how much I can spend on pins each month just to control the spending a bit. So I took a look at my PayPal account and found that by the 5th of this month I had already exceeded the amount I told myself I could spend! So now I have to go the rest of the month and not buy anything. I hope I can make it. I hope I can do enough trading through the month so that I can get my pin mail fix.

Do you have a budget/allowance that you allow yourself to spend?

I know how you feel, when I looked at my paypal for the last 2 months, I was kinda shocked, lol. I promised no more buying until our trip to WDW in December. We'll see how long I last.

my ebay budget: what I put into it via selling stuff. If I want something off ebay, i have to sell a pin, or some other collectable item so that I have money in the paypal. Otherwise, its no ebay purchases. keeps me pretty well under control. Now, at the parks.... a whole other story. It is sooooooo hard to not buy extra pins when i go to the releases. And when I am in the park now and its not a release day, I kind of avoid the pin shops like a plague.

Well i just bid on something on that auction site even though I'm not supposed to buy anything until next month. I feel so guilty now...lol. I actually hope that I get outbid.

I'm sure I'll be able to control myself as the months go by but right since it is all new...I want them all! I would be in such trouble right now if I lived near a park. I'm already trying to talk DH into taking to me to WDW on the weekend of 11/2 for the pin trading night. He isn't biting. LOL!

Plane tickets $500
Hotel/food/etc. $500
Pin Trading Night...priceless

I know what you mean. I am still new, so I always find a pin that auction site that I just have to have. After the Designer Villain pins, I am trying to put myself on a budget, especially seeing how much I spent over the last month. Ugh. If DSF was not coming out with all those Alice pins, I might feel more optimistic about sticking to my budget this month.

I am glad you asked this question. I am new to this also and last year spent wayyy tooooomuch. I took a break from this site/ebay and paid off my bills. Now I am back. I am thinking of budgeting myself but would like to see what others say about this addiction.

I know exactly how you feel! It has been a few days short of a month and a few hundred are gone!!!! I am making sure that I set up an allowance, and if I exceed a certain months allowance, I'll just end up taking from a different months. The only way I'm rationalizing right now is since I JUST started, I need to get pins to trade pins.

I had to put myself on a budget at the beginning of this year and surprisingly did really well with it . . .for a little while. My original plan was $50 a month for purchases, and $20 a month for trades (unless it was a special event month, ie Anniversary, birthday, etc). I did really well with it, until we started collecting the PoDMs again (March). Then it went to $75/$20 a month, and $100/$20 special event months. If I had any left over, it was supposed to go into a separate fund for the September event, but I ended up rolling it over to the next month. If I overspent, the amount I was over by was subtracted from the next month.

I did well until about May when we had a major life change (location wise, health wise, job wise, you-name-it-wise), and I delved back into pin therapy. :( My wallet still is hurting from that, as well as the September pin event!!! Hopefully I'll get back on the wagon with this month. . .but we'll see! :anxious:

LOL sounds like quite of few of "us" need a pinaholic support group! I too am new to collecting/obsessing over these little gems/demons. As a few of you have confessed to spending (cough, cough) um a pile of money, I too have spent (insert large number here) of dollars in the last month or so and also need to get serious about budgeting.

I would love to see any veteran tips on how to control the newbie frantic pin acquisition phase. To all my fellow addicts... you are not alone if that makes you feel any better.

Part of my problem is that I can't figure out if I should just buy the pins I want or if I should buy traders in hopes to trade for the pins I want. Either way I'm spending the money but there is no guarantee that I'll be able to trade for the pins I want. So does it just make more sense to just buy those that I want? But trading is so much fun! See the back and forth? Buy for me...buy to trade? This is why I spent so much money last month because I bought for both me and for trade. I think unfortunately with my newness I didn't get as good of pins as I thought I was for trading. UGH! This is confusing! LOL!

I've been a various collector for years so I know about this problem xD each month I figure out how much money I have after bills that belongs to no one but me. I can spend that however I choose but once it's gone I cannot spend any more - it's worked so far.

Haha, Im much the same as everyone else, after last years Designer Princesses and all the mental pin buying I had to be carefull this year.
Being new to the hobby last year I pretty much went over the top spending way too much and ended up having to borrow money for my hoilday! . Gulp! not good,
so this year if im honest ive been avoiding these forums! lol(they cost me too much money in the buying bit! lol)
and limit myself to only only buying the new UK pin releases which come out every 2 weeks or so, that way i can get a small pin fix and build up a trading collection for my Disney World trip next year!!! For now that will have to do but id still it works out to about 30 or 40 GBP per month, so not to bad i think, .... If I can stick to it, I was doing pretty well till a few days ago I braved a trip to the sales forum and came out with new pins!! lol o_0

I was a bit shocked by what I spent last month on pins, but each month can be so different, some months Ive bought very little. It just depends on whether rare or old pins become available to purchase, and of course I cant pass on them, I never know when I'll see them again!! I just try to limit buying traders and only buy pins that I want for my collection.

I have spent way too much on pins lately including on our WDW trip lol... I am determined to just pick a few pins to focus on finding a month, but if a grail pops up I will go after it. So far it hasn't worked to well lol

It's sooo hard for me to control myself lol. We are trying to save to go to WDW in Feb and I have some credit card debt I need to pay off. I have made the decision to not purchase anymore traders until WDW, and give myself a $50 a month budget for keepers. It was a hard decision, because I love to trade online. Trading is what makes this hobby unique and fun. It's only a few months and once I am in the happiest place on earth it will all be worth it. :)

it is very hard, especially when you see a wonderful PODM scene pop up! I now have 5 tangled and 3 Lion King :/ But would take additional ones if my grail scenes come along lol, especially Lion King...and therein lies the problem. lol

I try and put aside a set amount each month. But when unexpected things happen I have to then take it from the pin fund :(. At one stage several months ago I had to avoid ebay and just buy pins from the UK disney store due to funds. But I kept going on ebay so that went out of the window lol.
