Limited Edition 17" Collector Dolls Information

I think the China Doll looks beautiful. But it's the same problem I had with Sgt Calhoun, I haven't seen the movie yet so I'm not sure if it's a character I'm going to love or not. I'm buying the dolls with the expectation that I'm keeping them not selling them at a future date, so while the low edition size makes it a good 'investment' doll, I'm not sure if it's a doll I'm going to want in my collection. Hopefully, the higher price of the doll will give me some time to think :)

I'm really hoping that the China doll's price tag is due to her being more of a replica than a doll. If they raise the LE Princesses to $179 per doll I might be out of this collection. (Okay, I'll totally still buy Ariel, but I won't be happy about it)

Quoting/paraphrasing Shivatopia from the other thread about the dolls, I think she is less "LE Doll" and more "Movie Replica". She's packaged completely differently, has a wooden doll stand, and she is made out of resin, not vinyl. I think he hit it on the head.
Me? I simply just don't want her for the same reason I don't want the Calhoun doll or the princesses, she wouldn't fit within my collection.
Plus, if you think about it, even though she's LE 500, I do think she'll be available for a while. People went crazy over a two doll set costing $199...even though it is still technically the same "$99.50 per doll" price. If this were the new going rate for the dolls, Disney knows that it would receive tons of "hate e-mails" from people complaining about the price. Look at the M&E combo...still sitting on their website. Look at the majority of the villain designer dolls collecting dust on their shelves. The only change we doll collectors like (and make this well known) is a new doll to the collection. Other than that...no no, we make it clear we don't like change. ;)

*Of course, I could be wrong and this could be a precursor to Disney wanting a larger bonuses...but I'm gonna play it blissful in the hopes that we can count on the Heirloom Collection remaining at the $99.50 per doll. :)

I'm most definitely passing on this doll. The price is just outrageous. It's what...? 2" (inches) taller than the usual 17" dolls and they hack up the price 80 bucks? No way Disney...The box is gross too! For the price she should have been made of porcelain. It doesn't even matter that her edition size is 500; Alice and QoH 17" dolls were LE of 500 and only retailed $99.95. They both were clearly much better than this doll too. I just can't understand why they have changed the dolls quality, pricing and overall look so much in the last 2 years. Its a disappointment, but I'm happy collecting my pins and being able to trade here and make friends.

FYI Resin is just as cheap if not cheaper than vinyl because it has a higher probability of cracking in varying climates and braking even from the smallest fall.

Agreed that resin is far more fragile, but they are trying to make her look as if she were made out of porcelain, which you cannot really get out of vinyl. I certainly hope that anyone who buys these is a collector and does not rough-handle it (i.e. give it to a child to play with)! Disney's movie replica-type merchandise tends to be on the more pricey side, and I truly do not think that this was intended to be a part of the other 17" doll collection (the packaging reveals a lot).

Also noteworthy is that she is not located in the doll section of the website at this time. I found her through the film's merchandise link.

Personally, I am also passing on this doll: as it is expensive, I have no idea if I am going to like the character, and she just looks like one of those scary Victorian porcelain dolls that come alive and do bad things to people at night... Just my personal opinion. :) But for those that do want to obtain her, I do hope that you are able!

For anyone who actually likes the China Girl doll (myself included), I found this new trailer online which someone recorded from their television, as I don't think it's been released officially by Disney online yet. But they show some new footage from the film, including a teeny tiny bit of new footage of China Girl. Looks totally awesome. " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKV-MwUSVJ4 " I REALLY hope we get at least one more LE 'Oz' Doll. This film is gonna be BIG!

I don't especially like the doll but she looks adorable in the movie

Dear God, I'm soooo freakishly nervous! If anything comes out, will it come out at 00:00 in American time? Because then I won't be seeing anything before tomorrow morning, being Dutch and stuff :p I'm sooo hoping for a Wendy doll, but if they release SOMETHING I'm already superhappy! It would really be a disaster for me if they end up releasing nothing tomorrow, my fingers itch with the need of a new dolly...
China Doll is pretty and super accurate, judging by the fraction of film posted here earlier, but I don't want her THAT much, she's too expensive, and if they end up selling some LE Oz witches, she would be out of proportion. If she was cheaper, I would've gotten her anyway though :p.

I think the reason why they went with the China Doll instead of a witch for the LE merchandise is because she is a character created by Disney. I do not know much about the OZ series but I am assuming that the witches are based on characters from the original story? If that is the case then didnt Disney have to pay someone for using the characters? That and the witches are portrayed by actresses therefore it would come back to the case of Disney avoids creating too much merchandise based on real live characters e.g Giselle from Enchanted and any of the characters from Pirates of the Caribbean.

As for an LE release for Peter Pan, I still think there is a chance we will be seeing something tonight. Especially if people are putting the China doll as not part of the Disney LE Heirloom doll set (which I do agree with since the box is different) then it means that Disney is still due a LE doll.

Also the Rapunzel Gallery Print has come back up online on the Disneystore.co.uk site which I am happy about. Glad that I kept an eye on this as I was hoping something like this would happen!

Well my fingers are crossed something is released tonight! I just left my store and my "contact" was adamant that there would be no doll tomorrow, and she knows I would be so upset if I missed something. She said that Aladdin was supposed to be the spring release and she thought we would have had a Jasmine doll but since they scrapped it, she didn't expect anything until October. Now we all know that won't happen but she was pretty sure nothing would be out tomorrow :(

Maybe they just got better at keeping secrets....did any hear or see anything about the china girl doll before she was released?

my local store manager said something about a "porcelain doll" for oz when i went to the store last thursday. I didn't know it was already being released this early though.

if thy release ANY dolls for peter pan it will be a surprise and NO I don't count tinker bell dolls since she is a completely different franchise now unfortunately. I hope a male thang with peter and hook but hoo knows? is that true about Aladdin being scraped?

The China doll is in the Oz books, I did get her, I also have a story book kind of collection, but I agree this doll is something different than the Limited 17 inch dolls, so I hope this is not the new price point. I am still holding out hope for something for PP since it is Diamond Edition DVD. Even the Lion King Diamond Edition had a high end Simba plush released, so I am hoping they do something for PP. I don't think the DVDs coming like Mulan will get dolls, just like Pocahontas was snubbed, but Disney can break their own rules. I do think that we collectors will have a chance to get what is released because the economy is so bad, so many people are not able to afford collectibles, outside of the Disney Store, the doll market is hurting. And as we have seen with Cinderella & the Villains, the Designer Princess doll sales were distorted by Ebay in the US so hopefully that won't happen again. I am doing a lot of hoping.

In the original Oz series, characters were turned into china dolls but there was never a specific china doll character, this character was created by Disney to fit in with the movie and was loosely based on the original Oz characters. She does look amazing and I think the price increase is a one off due to the doll type. I def don't think Disney will be increasing the price of the regular LE dolls unless they can justify the increase.

fingers crossed for a Peter Pan LE release tonight!!

There is a China Princess doll in the book, when they get involved with her in Dainty China Land. I just discovered there is a Dorothy of Oz movie being released this year. I am always amazed at that but I guess that is because people go from one studio to another taking ideas with them. I am confident Disney will do a LE or 2 from OZ. I agree with you, I am hoping we have a great surprise for Peter Pan!!!

Lol whoops sorry I didn't realize she was a doll I thought she was just a princess, mind you they refer to her as a china princess so I wasn't sure if that was China as in the country or china as in what she was made of lol. I assumed as well that the character in the Oz movie is just loosely based on a china doll character and is not actually an original character in the series. Makes me more excited to see the movie.

They could do another doll release for Oz during the DVD release? But I think for now the one should be enough for the movie release. I think they should leave other other LE release to Peter Pan.

I did hear about Dorothy of Oz and it sounds like it will be a musical (as they have Lea Michele voicing Dorothy). I don't know if it will do as well. But who knows it could be a big hit with the kids. Also FYI they also realized an Oz movie last year as well. Think it was called witches of Oz but I don't think that did very well.

you know which villain is rally the best and deserves a doll? Not maleficent this time, or the queen. The Coachman from Pinocchio. He was the freaking devil inside and out and he sold various children after the metamorphosis into donkeys and what comeuppance was there? NONE!

Actually, Resin is a more expensive material than porcelain. :) Just wanted to point that out! I still think she is rather pricey though! I'm setting an alarm to make sure I get up on time for a Peter Pan release!

UGH!!! I didn't expect the china doll to be so expensive:( I'm holding out to see if any doll is release for Peter Pan.

Was Mother Gothel and Wicked step mother surprise releases? Lady and the Tramp was a diamond release as well and there wasn't a limited edition plush released, as Disney did for Simba.

Lady Tremaine was a surprise release, though many collectors had a heads up on her because there were some online images/stock photos leaked before she launched.

So many comments I want to quote and respond to personally! (P.S. I DO NOT work for the store. I just used to about 2 years ago and have a knowledge of how it works. Also...I don't mean to come across as a pompous know-it-all...I just learn A LOT during bouts of insomnia.)

I feel that the Oz dolls and merchandise were going to come out eventually, but not so soon. Look at the timeline. If there are no Peter Pan LE dolls, then this is my theory as to why. Ultimately, this was originally supposed to be Aladdin that everyone was pre-ordering and picking up. But it was pushed back. My thought, there was an error with the Cinderella stepsisters in the classic doll combo pack. (Which is my theory as to why we didn't get an accompanying LE combo pack of the sisters as well.) Is it possible that the same machine or area malfunctioning was also in charge of the Jasmine (AND JAFAR) doll? To simply not create an LE Jasmine doll would have people in an outright anger and jamming up the website with complaints. The solution? Oh, lets push it back so the movie and doll come out together. That way, it seems like a joint purchase and not a problem later fixed. But wait...what do we sell in its place? Well...what movie has an anniversary coming up that we can diamond without a doll? Um...Peter Pan? IT'S A BOY'S MOVIE! LETS DO IT! (Trust me, gender roles and stereotypes are extremely prevalent in the Disney company. I know that you and I on here are probably extremely against that idea...but try working, or just listening, in a Disney Store for a day. Gender role assignments are EXTREMELY common place in the average consumer's mindsets.) So, with Peter Pan's release date bumped up so quickly, there is a huge potential they decided, since the title character is a boy and it's very "boy themed", they didn't need an accompanying LE doll.

To the people that spoke to the store employees and were told "no". If there is going to be an LE doll released in stores...then they know about it. Gothel was announced to store employees about a month before release and arrived for the back room about a week and a half before release. So, they know. If it's strictly online...then there is a major possibility that they in fact do not know. (Store-Inperson and Store-Online are like two brothers that never really speak unless someone else makes an effort.) BUT! If they do in fact know about any LE Peter Pan doll to be released, then they really can't tell you. Sure, they may have told you in the past about something or another...but you need to ask yourself two questions: Was there a manager around? Were there any/many other "guests" around? If a manager were to overhear someone saying "Oh, this isn't announced, but we have it in the back for this date", then there would be trouble. If a very..."special guest"...hears one CM telling a non-CM about an LE item, then there is a chance that the "guest" could complain. Special treatment, favoritism, unfair advantage, blah blah blah. (Seriously, you good guests need to start speaking up and taking out those bad ones because those ones ruin things for many.) Those bad eggs could have basically made it so there is a "gag order" of sorts on CM to which they cannot speak of anything they know, just to be on the safe side.

And, as for "Why China Girl?" Well, I have a few thoughts on that one too. Movie Replica. Sure, it's a character that just happens to be a doll as well, but James Franco probably carried around a more durable replica of the same thing. Why not use the same mold with better materials and profit off of it? Sounds smart to me. Also, the original L. Frank Baum books are public domain. (That's just fancy talk for "it's been over 100 years...it is free range to all".) BUT! There is a catch. MGM makes sure that anyone and everyone wanting to make merchandise for anything Oz related...knows that they own the rights to the movie and imagery that stared Judy Garland. Their reasoning and strongest defense "Even if you haven't seen our movie, it's so iconic everywhere that it's near impossible for you not to imagine our interpretation when you read the books for the first time". Eh, you gotta hand that to them. So, when Disney tried to trademark "Oz, The Great and Powerful", a week later, MGM tried to patent "The Great and Powerful Oz" and sue Disney over the rights. (Disney of course won.) Just an example of MGM's dedication to total ownership and control: a bar in Kansas tried to profit by creating Oz themed wines. MGM sued and won every claim EXCEPT one. The bottle named "Flying Monkees". (I believe that is actually how they spelled it.) But why that one bottle? The movie never once refereed to the flying monkeys as "flying monkeys". The witch called them "my pretties", but nothing more. China Girl is not at all in the MGM Wizard of Oz, so Disney can market the living daylights out of her till we die and MGM can't touch them for it. Something that I am betting cannot and will not be in the movie are...the Ruby Slippers. In the book they weren't ruby. MGM made them ruby because in technicolor, they really popped. In the actual book color of silver...yeah...not so much. So, every other character and item made are potential battles between Disney Merchandising and MGM Merchandising. How does all this effect us? Eh, not really at all...but still, the more you know. I will always love and adore the MGM Wizard of Oz, but they simply need to just take a handful of chill pills, throw them at their mouths, and swallow whatever make it in. And as for Disney, even though I shelled out my hard earned cash for the "Disney Movie Collection" dolls, I do hope they make a Wicked Witch of the West LE doll. They can just tell MGM to "Have a *magical* day." (I just hope it's during a doll downtime so I have the spare cash!)

So, why no Peter Pan and Oz instead? The timeline is my simple guess. I'm just hoping that my reasoning as to why there might not be any Peter Pan LE released turns out to be all for nothing and I successfully place an order for an LE Captain Hook doll.

For those of you still with me and that haven't scrolled past my long ramblings of hypothesis and trivia, I thank you. ;)
