So I'm hunting down Alice LE 17 doll right now like I'm sure most people are. Ebay has an Alice+Snow White combo deal. I already have snow white but this deal seemed really good. The bid started at 99 cent no reserves and now it's at 500 with 5 days left. Originally the seller accepted paypal and now this message appeared for the listing: On Feb-20-13 at 12:15:56 PST, seller added the following information:Please note, i cannot accept papal. I am having account issues. the items are still availible, so if you live locally we can work something out. or if you want to do something else that is fine too, like a Mo or check. just message me on facebook Teddy Ruetz in tucson az

First off why wouldn't this seller be able to fix their paypal account by 5 days?
Second to only accept check or MO seems risky to me.
Third he listed his contact as a facebook and not going through the proper channels through ebay. I pulled up his facebook page and there really wasn't much info I can gather from there.

Any thoughts?
I guess my gut feeling is something is shady or off but maybe i'm also over thinking it? :anxious:

Yeah, I don't think I would send a check or MO.....not sure if eBay covers that if they never send it. Unless I could meet up with them, I would be leary of that too.

Be careful listing specific sellers ;). Sometimes things that sound to good to be true usually are. Like Jamie said, I would not do anything ebay doesn't cover. Who knows what issues are going on with the sellers PP account. I am sure another great deal (that will be well worth it!) are just around the corner!!

Thanks everyone, I will take your advice and pass on this deal. I didn't mention the sellers ebay account name, I just listed what his messaged said verbatim. He wanted people to go outside the ebay channel so for sure ebay wouldn't cover any losses or anything like that. I also just found that under facebook page disney store collector dolls he listed these two dolls for sale a few weeks back but when people requested actual photos of the dolls he would never post it. On ebay they are stock images and not of the actual dolls as well. There's just to many stop signs :( I will just have to wait

Oh thats is like a serious no!! Is the seller selling anything else?
Hmm what a little sketchball!!

Shady. It's an auction for the two hardest to acquire LE dolls, it's reached a price that is practically a total steal based on the secondary market prices (together and separately), and now it's been announced that he needs a form of payment that is essentially lacking a convenient online paper trail. Sure, it's possible that it's all legit and truthful...and maybe we are being too cautious...but I'm sorta getting more conspiracy theory thoughts about this and considerably less positive thoughts. In the back of my mind, it just feels too much like a great way to tempt free $500 out of an unsuspecting collector.

Yeah, this activity seems very suspicious. It's actually against eBay's policy for the seller to offer running the transaction outside of eBay's system, so this listing should be reported and taken down. I would not go near this one.

Let me ask an off-topic question. Why can't we list specific sellers if they are being shady/bad sellers? Isn't this something we SHOULD do so we don't get screwed over? Seems like a really silly rule...

Well if the seller turns out to be genuine then all the posits on this thread would have been misleading and unfair to the seller. So I guess it is just something to do out of courtesy. If someone had a bad experience from a dodgy seller then I believe that should be fine but if is all based on speculation then that's another story.

yes, if its walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and squacks like a duck, do you have to put your foot up its butt to know its a duck?

Run do not walk, RUN away from this, there are more holes in this than swiss cheese,

This is more shady than a front porch veranda, in La, in July , with Mint Julips on ice waitng on a sidetable,

PLEASE BE CAREFUL, IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT OFTEN IS, NOT ALWAYS BUT OFTEN,

ok off warning soapbox!!

Well right now it's all speculation, so I would hate to take the opportunity away from someone, but then again I would hate to see a buyer get chipped from this too. Well if someone lived in AZ it would be harder to get chipped since you can physically go there and validate the item and then pay.

Hmmm the "I don't accept PayPal" statement is what's throwing me off more than anything. Shouldn't you get your PayPal account fixed before you start listing things?

According to the eBay Accepted Payments Policy:

Accepted:

  • PayPal
  • ProPay
  • Skrill
  • Paymate
  • Credit card or debit card processed through the seller's Internet merchant account
  • Payment upon pickup
  • Bill Me Later

Restricted:

  • Bank-to-bank transfers (also known as bank wire transfers and bank cash transfers)
  • Checks
  • Money orders
  • Online payment services: Allpay.net, CertaPay, hyperwallet.com, Fiserv, Nochex.com, XOOM

These payment methods may be used only in certain listing categories.
See the full list of categories that allow bank-to-bank transfers, checks, money orders, and online payment services.(I checked the categories and collectibles definitely doesn't apply.)

Not Allowed:

  • Sending cash through the mail
  • Sending cash or money orders through instant, point-to-point cash transfer services (that are not banks) such as Western Union or MoneyGram
  • Mailing checks or money orders (except for items in categories specifically permitted)
  • Paying through bank-to-bank transfers (except for items in categories specifically permitted below)
  • Paying by "topping off" a seller's prepaid credit or debit card
  • Paying using online or other payment methods not specifically permitted in this policy
  • Asking buyers to contact them for additional payment methods
  • Offering a payment method to some buyers and not to others
  • Discouraging buyers from using any payment method the seller specified in the listing
  • Asking buyers to pay using a method not mentioned in the listing.

These rules apply to all transaction-related correspondence between a seller and buyer as well as the listings.

The rules also go on to say...

Sellers aren't allowed to make statements like:

  • "Contact us for payment information."
  • "Contact us for other payment methods."
  • "Contact us for your preferred payment method."
  • "Buyers may request to pay by check or money order."
There's only one exception: Sellers who offer payment upon pickup may include the following statement in their listings: "Contact me for payment methods to pay on pickup."

So it seems (to me) like the seller can ask for a check or money order if they are doing a local pickup, but if the winner needs the dolls shipped to them these forms of payment are not allowed.

The seller either needs to...

-change the "forms of payment" part of his listing to local pickup only (right now under "forms of payment" he still has PayPal listed, as well as Bill Me Later and local pickup)

OR

-get his PayPal account fixed so he can list the items for everyone

Either way right now it seems like the listing isn't accurate and needs to be reported/changed/removed.

I also (personally) don't like when a seller doesn't provide actual pictures of the items. I would like to think he is legit because he has also listed a lot of Snow White items where there is an actual picture of the items for auction, but as you said previously when he was asked to provide pictures of the dolls on Facebook he failed to do so...so yeah....I would probably stay away. :)

I live in AZ, I do not know if that helps but I accept paypal LOL maybe we could work out a pick up deal if it is near Tempe. :)

As far as listing eBay sellers names I do not understand why I would want to show courtesy to someone who is being dodgy/shady/a bad seller. We all know how to be good sellers and what to do/ what not to do in these situations, so giving bad sellers any leeway does not make sense to me, IMHO.

I understand but that is assuming that we know for a fact that the other party is being dodgy. Hence why I said I don't see a reason why not to name the seller if you can be absolutely sure that they are being dodgy. But if it is all based on speculation then wouldn't it be easier to just leave it alone or report it to eBay directly?

That is so sweet allottalaughs for offering to pick it up, but I think i'm going to stay clear of this seller. Who knows he might not even have these dolls. I rather just save my money and hopefully we get a new LE release for March  Some day maybe my fiance will get it for me as a wedding present!
