UK Disney Store surprise release - South of the south

Wow. And they didn't call it "Splash Mountain" pin. And they called Song of the South a "classic Disney film". That's when you know this pin was not released in the US.

I think there will be a lot of people who are going to be very mad about this pin. Your average pin collector could honestly care less about Song of the South. I cannot see the pin selling all that well. Though I am sure there are some die hard SotS fans who collect pins. However, once people who actively protest Song of the South even existing discover the pin, if they ever do, it will be taken down.

To be fair, SotS is a classic Disney film. It's just a classic Disney pretends doesn't exist. Most people don't even know Splash Mountain is based on SotS. Which seems rather ironic considering how many Americans absolutely hate this film.

Exactly. If the pin was released in the US, it wouldn't be called a classic because, like you said, Disney wants to pretend it doesn't exist.
 
This is one the disney films that I always liked to watch when I was younger and my partner has never seen it and most likely wont as to be honest I think it is a much better film than the likes of Dumbo, snow white and Pinocchio to name a few.

It was made years and years and years ago and I find there is nothing wrong with the film as a whole as its just todays generation that get uppity regarding anything racial and cause trouble. Haters gonna Hate but I actually like the film as a whole etc And to be fair the characters are FROM song of the south so Disney in its own right are saying its a song of the south pin as that IS what it is of.

Emily you cant buy pins in the store anymore and I see your in manchester so either trafford centre or Arndale store but none sells pins anymore and they are online only now. Plus you got a PM coming your way
 
I really want this pin. I love Song of the South, though I haven't seen it in years. I used to watch it all the time when I was younger and me and my dad always sing the song together. If anybody wants one PM me and we can see if we can work something out? I probably won't be buying it until next weeks pin release because as many others have said, Disney store UK charges a ridiculous amount of postage.
 
I loved the music from this film! When I was a kid I didn't know about all the racial issues and I still love the movie! If it was released here... I would buy it!

I see you're from Ireland. Race relations in Ireland are radically different from race relations in the US. James Baskett, who played Uncle Remus, was not allowed at the premier of Song of the South because it took place in the South. In 1946 when the movie was released, the South (what the movie is based on), was segregated. White people and people of color could not be in the same stores, restaurants, etc. This movie also depicts stereotypes of black people as the happy servant (movie takes place after the American Civil War) and relies on the uncle tom stereotype. African Americans have been protesting this film in the US since 1946 when it was released. It was until the 1960s, when the US was at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, did white people start protesting this film as well. People are not just "uppity" (way to use racially charged language!) about racial issues today. People are upset about this film because it heavily relies on stereotypes that people still believe today.
 
I'm prepared to watch a film while keeping in mind that the open depiction of racial stereotypes is a product of the time - Gone with the Wind comes to mind as one of most obvious examples. When WB released some older Looney Toons on video a few years back, they included an Intro by Whoopi Goldberg that addressed some of these issues. I think there is an argument to be made that pretending these stereotypes didn't/don't exist is in itself problematic. Mind you, I wouldn't show certain films, including this one, to a child until he/she was old enough to discuss some of the context.

All that being said, I've never personally seen the appeal of Song of the South - I'd lock this one in the Disney Vault and throw away the key.

I love this pin! Really want! Since I collect all things bunny related of course I love Bre'r rabbit. I was told all the Uncle Remus stories growing up by my grandmother and father but I'm from the south and it was a tradition thing. I know it's very offensive to most though =/
