Honestly I don't see a problem with this method
Increasing edition sizes so everyone has a chance is a nice thought but the it comes with serious side effects. DSF has to be careful about the edition sizes. Many people that buy their pins do so because of the lower edition sizes to use as good traders. An increase in edition size increases supply and the trading power of those pins go down. I know there are at lot of pins I have bought from DSF that I wouldn't have in the edition size was higher, either due to the design or the cost. If they increase the edition sizes and the sales slow down or stop, its not good for them. Granted, it wouldn't be an instant stop but I'm sure there are people people that will decide its not worth the travel time, gas, parking, ect to get those higher edition sizes pins in the long run. Lets be honest, the store doesn't do that much other business and pins keep the store running. The same way that 10 years ago Mickey's of Glendale was always operating at a loss and almost shut down completely before they started their pin sales.

There is no perfect way for them to solve this. What they are doing now is completely broken but what is the right way to fix it that still makes people happy and keeps the store turning a profit....

I say they just create a membership or something lol. For everyone...out-of-state or CA residents. They could do it like DMC...you get the flyer with the upcoming pin release, decide if want the pin and enter or withdraw. If you enter, you enter for a chance to purchase the pin/s at cost with shipping or a pick-up option. Idk this is a brainstorm idea, but I think something like this could work. It would eventually determine the number of collectors for Disney and they could try to create more suitable edition sizes for particular releases. Without any real data to show who wants what and which pins will be popular there's no reason for them to make any changes. They just keep raking in the dollars so who cares right?

the above statement may be somewhat true. But, In my honest opinion if they did increase the limited edition sizes everyone who isn't close to Disney soda fountain would have a chance to buy them via phone order directly. So I am sure that they will still sell out eventually maybe not as quickly but surely they will <3

I really really like the idea of increasing edition sizes, at least for the popular characters/movies. If the design is nice, Disney will have no problem selling an LE 1000-1500 Rapunzel pin. Heck, they make LE1000 of unpopular characters, why not Rapunzel too.

Exactly! Idk about all the others out there. But in my case, I could care less what the edition size of a pin is. If it is big beautiful and sparkly, or has sentimental reminders attached to the design for me specifically I will collect it! Why? Cause I want to look at it and arrange it on a beautiful pin board filled with other pins to fuel my obsession with Disney lol!!! I never usually look at the backs. And when I show my pins off... Well...... I am definitely NOT showing off a back stamp and saying wow, isn't this back stamp beautiful???? Lololol

No DSF pins last a week or two other than the Fairies. DSF has no LE's on the rack for visiting pin traders. The PTD's was the only guarantee but now that's not even a given. Le500 pins, or even le750 pins are still low enough LE for a new movie or good release to be popular yet have a few for the racks. Theater goers, tourists, and visiting pin collectors will buy out the rack pins eventually. We haven't had a sale bin in 18 months.

I've only been trading 3 years myself, but have talked several times to different traders who have been around since the early days of pin trading, and they all told me that edition sizes used to be much higher than they are now, and pins regularly sold out.

I think they should just release pins whenever they feel like it and not announce anything. If someone happens to be there and sees what's offered, they can post and people can travel up there. It's just getting a little crazy.

I like this idea. If I remember correctly, this is sort of what it was like when Pin Trading first started. It was nice being able to just discover it on your own, whereas now you now practically have to plan your trips around specific pins if you want them that badly!

How about DSF announces what they are releasing the night before they release it. Total surprise. They could announce after closing that such and such 4 pins are being released at 9:30 tomorrow. Don't post the when and what until after closing. It would halt the presales. If you wanted to camp out you could. It gives everyone time to get down/up there. It seemed to work ok for the Rapunzel PTD. Word leaked after closing and everyone lined up that night.

But then they'd obviously be favoring characters. And they can't do that as a respectable parent! I mean company!

There is realativly 1500 le pins from DSF. (100%)

There are 110 marquees. (7.3%)
There are 49 Beloved Tales (3.2%)
There are 11 Tangled pins. (.73%)
There are 20 UP pins. (1.3%)
There is 168 Stitch pins. (11.2%)
There is 84 Jessica pins. (5.6%)
Roughly 100 Mickey pins. (When you search Mickey or Mickey Mouse there's a lot of other pins that pop up too so I counted some off)
(6.6%)
Roughly 125 NBC pins so 8.3%
Roughly 116 PTDs so 7.3%

51.53% of all DSF pins are in these categories....

There is only about 54 LE 500 pins (for some reason the marquees won't come up.). (3.5%)

Maybe not PLAYING FAVORITES...but maybe they just like stitch and Jessica alot.

The crazy thing is, Disney would profit so much MORE by selling an LE 1000 Rapunzel pin. I understand they may not want to lose the "collectibility value" of the pins, but the state we are in today is causing these pins to lose the Disney spirit that first attracted me to the hobby. I don't blame the resellers, because they are working their butts of trying to get them. And I don't blame the buyers, because with the lack of releases these days I understand the demand. But I do blame Disney for not reacting and making the necessary changes to ensure that everyone in the world can enjoy their pin merchandise without having to break the bank.

I completely agree Laz. If the pin designers would stop repeating the same poses and scenes, and come up with something creative for a change (look at all the Disney Auction pins, that sold for $10-30 and yet are big, beautiful, shiny pins) it would reinvigorate the hobby and hopefully make it less cutthroat than it's been lately.

DSf has tried increasing edition size. the LE500's were a bit of a flop. maybe a compromise of le400????

Thing is they shouldn't be considered flops if they don't sell out in an hour. It would be so nice to actually find LE pins on the racks when casually stopping at the El Cap for a movie or a soda. They'll still sell out eventually (well, we'll exclude poor Celia from this LOL) and everyone will be happier.

I'm still looking for Celia and Roz!!!! If I lived over there I could get one... without waiting in line!!!!

Let me know if there's anything you really want that's just sitting on the shelves... I can always run in and buy "non-line-up" pins for anyone... (Celia and Roz might even still be there...)

Why not just anounce release dates...but not what will be released?

People would still line up... They seem to line up for everything at the DSF now... It may not be _crazy_ lines without knowing the pin content, but the lines would still be there...

People line up for less popular releases just hoping for a surprise pin. They leave without buying anything if there isn't one.

I like this idea. I really do it's like what Pin Talk does with Pins @ Cost. You email your interest, your name gets pulled, you win a pin and pay the cost. I also like the larger edition size.
