Had an interesting debate so figured to get others opinions..

How many pins does it take to say you 'collect' a theme? 1, 10, 20?

Does it become a collection after harder to get pins are acquired or just basic, easier to get ones?

For instance I don't consider myself to collect Piglet/Pooh family pins but since I realize I own 36 of them (all easy to get ones), was told thats an official collection...

I think you "Collect" a type of pin the minute you decide you want to focus on a certain type of pin, and obtain your first one. Easy/Basic, Difficult/Rare, doesn't matter. Once you get it started, you collect it, and every addition builds on to your collection.

For me, I say I have a collection when I have around 10 pins in it. But I agree with everyone, you have a collection when you declare you have one as long as you have at least 1 pin in it. So I vote 10-20 because that is when I think I finally have a collection.

^ This :)

I think I agree with those who've already posted. A collection is whatever you think a collection is, beginning with when you first decide to start collecting it and acquire your first one, and continuing when you decide to keep looking for pins around that theme.

It is really just your determination. Everybody starts out with 1, but you need that determination to keep on collecting. Therefore I would say 1.

When we lived in Washington, and were members of the local NFFC chapter, the general rule was if you had 3 items... it was a collection.

I'm a Susie the Blue Coupe collector. She only has 5 pins in existence. 4 are from Japan and one is from an LE 50 frame set. All very difficult to find. Right now I only have one. I wouldn't be surprised if my Susie collection never grows beyond that.

A friend, in another hobby, many many years ago said that any thing over 3 was a collection. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it..lol

collection starts with 1 pin and a person saying I want more, when the person stops saying I want more pins then they are done collecting, really I do not know the answer to your question all I do know is I am not done yet with collecting.

I know a few people that have bought pins as souvenirs and they would never consider themselves a collector or that all of their pins combined were even a collection... just souvenirs, of equal importance to them as a magnet from any tourist destination. But when you end up with 50+ pins, you're definitely in collector territory!! However, I suppose that number could also be over 20, 30, or 40 pins. The people I know who are super casual about it have around 10 pins, give or take a few, and they think all of us who trade at the parks are crazy!!

And yes, there does exist specialized pins with specific characters or holidays or whatever that when gathered together, is less than 10 pins, but wouldn't that be considered a sub-collection or category within your entire collection of pins? Or am I just splitting hairs?

I voted 50+

Great topic!!

This thread immediately bought to mind my own pins. I have several themes that I collect; Chip n Dale is my biggest with maybe 300ish pins -so this definitely a collection. Still I voted under 10; my Pascal collection (3 pins), Lady & the Tramp collection (4pins as I'm very choosy!) & Night of Joy collection (1pin & 1 on the way) are still just as special to me. Sometimes I refer to them as my mini or sub collections though ;)

I know what I want to collect, and the amount of pins I have in that collection doesn't matter to me. :p I knew after seeinng Tangled that I wanted to collect Mother Gothel and Rapunzel's parents. There's been no pins of her parents so far, and of the two Gothel pins that exist, I only actually like one. Which I don't even have yet, as it's the Designer Gothel. I still consider myself a Gothel collector though!
