I'm aggravated with people always pulling the race card with Disney; it's old now! Sure, a lot of them are "white," but I go by nationality.

Belle would be French.
Tiana is African-American.
Ariel, to me, would be Danish.
Mulan is Asian.
Rapunzel would be German.
Jasmine is Middle Eastern. (Okay, I probably got this one wrong.)
Pocahontas is Native American.
Merida is Scottish.

Okay, maybe I'm just weird??

LOL this is a great point and I definitely agree, are Anna and Elsa Norwegian?

I think you are right about Jasmine as Agrabah was based around the middle east, if you don't me correcting you though, Mulan was Chinese and I know that China is a part of Asia but referring to her as being Asian would be like referring to most of the princesses as European LOL.

I always loved how most of the princesses have American accents though, regardless of where they are from LOL. I do agree though that it is a little silly how they keep playing the race card just because they want to find something wrong with it. That is just silly. I honestly dont think that Disney intends to make all princesses Caucasian it is just that based on the fables and tales that they are based on they are Caucasian so go blame the Grimm brothers of Hans Christian Andersen LOL.

I like Tiana but she spends SO much time as a frog. I like frogs, but I prefer my princesses to be in human form. I don't think her looks are the reason she is as you say, overlooked. I don't think people liked her story as much or the froggy time.

You know, I have never really thought long and hard about it, but you are exactly right about Tiana. Little girls, do prefer real human princesses to frogs. (This big girl added to the list). I have a daughter that just turned 5 and she starts zoning out about 1/2 way through The PandF. I never thought about why, but I am sure it is because of the all the "frog time". She is a girly girl and not much of a frog person. She loves watching Rapunzel, Ariel, and Belle and watches those movies while barely even blinking. .... She is obsessed with Frozen and knows all of the words to the songs.

Another reason why I think Tiana is not as popular is that The PandF scares a lot of kids -- with the voodoo and all. I have talked with several parents that won't even let their kids watch this movie because of it. One time I was at DS (actually buying the Tiana costume for my daughter) and some lady went off on how she would never let her daughter watch the movie, much less purchase merchandise from the movie. I simply replied, "Isn't it great how we are all so different?" ... and proceeded to buy the "sinful garb" for my child. (I guess I lost her vote for Mother of the Year).

Um...yeah no. I'm pretty sure Ariel's not Danish, she's Sushi.
Teehee...sorry...I really could not help myself. ;)

I dunno...I love you all...but it is kinda getting boring reading all these discussions of Princess races *here*. I totally appreciate and am interested in what people think...but it doesn't really relate to this thread. I mean, in a few weeks, this thread will essentially become outdated/no longer useful until any surprise release. But...not yet.

can anyone remember if the Ariel L.E dolls were jacked up on Ebay shortly after they sold out? they seem reasonably priced now, Im wondering if the second set of frozen dolls will come down in price?, I really want them but I may have to wait as my car decided to drain my funds again this month. :( .

I'm just disappointed that when Tiana became a princess I still couldn't find my name on a keychain. *sigh*
But I think the reason most princesses are white is because most of their stories come from Europe (except Jasmines and Mulans and Pocahontas) and they are trying to stay true to the writers that Disney bought the stories from. I was shocked that even though the princess and the frog is european that they managed to set it in Louisiana and have a black princess and it seemed pretty flawless. I'm sure once Disney exhausts all the classic fairytales they will have no where to go but branch out into other ethnicities.

Of all the people that bought coloring books can someone tell me which is their favorite for accurate character portrayals for Frozen? I want to make a quilt and coloring books are a good base for applique

I think some of the Ariel LE on ebay jacked up the price when Eric and Ursula was out, but unfortunately ebay evils went FULL FORCE for Ariel, there is just so many of them on the second hand market, and if they jacked up the price, they can't get it out of their hands! I believe that's why Ariel is at a reasonable price NOW. However in years to come, when the number of Ariel on ebay decrease, that doll will go up in price again due to Ariel's popularity I believe.

Ariel's, Ursula, Eric price was definitely higher when it first came out. However, they are all reasonably priced now. Most dolls do go for more when it first comes out and then as the hype dies down the price drops or the market is flooded. Then eventually the price goes back up again... That's what's been happening with the past LE dolls anyhow... The only ones that continue and will continue to rise is ELSA snow queen and coronation anna because the LE is only 2500 and most people got their hands on the dolls are collectors so there aren't as many on ebay therefore supply and demand the price increases and will most likely not go down. It will stabilize at some point though kinda how Alice and Snow White are.

Jasmine is very popular from what I've seen. Mulan and Pocahontas are more "serious" characters. Their films deal with racism, war and all that stuff. Plus they lack the lovely gowns that characters like Cinderella, Belle and Aurora have. Also Pocahontas doesn't get a happy ending in her film and Mulan's romance is left pretty ambiguous at the end. I think these things all factor in to their lack of popularity in the line up. Tiana is also a more serious character. She isn't a quirky dreamer like Ariel or Rapunzel. She is a hard working realist whose goal is to open a restaurant. I've also heard people complain that Tiana was only made so there could be a black princess in the mix. It's a shame really because Mulan, Tiana and Pocahontas are all such strong characters and very good role models.

Plus their films aren't as beloved. Snow White was the first Disney film and the first animated fiml in American cinema. Cinderella was a huge hit, Disney's biggest since SW. It's also the most famous fairy tale. Sleeping Beauty was a hit and featured ground breaking animation. Mermaid kick started the Disney Renaissance. BatB was the first animated film in history to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture. Aladdin was a huge hit, highest grossing film of 1992. Tangled and Frozen are both mega hits as well. Pocahontas and Mulan's films did well at the box office but Poca came after TLK and is pretty much blamed for being the beginning of the end of the Renaissance. Mulan came out much later when Disney wasn't at the top anymore. PatF did well but not as well as Disney as hoping.

But still it's a shame these characters aren't as popular as they should be.

it is funny because form where I lived, people just like to stick with the " original six", which is Snow, Aurora, Cindy, Belle, Ariel, and Jasmine. So jasmine is very popular IMO. Recently they start to add Rapunzel into the market, so she became more popular. I guess it all have to do with how you plan to market all these things. I wander how long will it take for us to get some frozen merch....... Since it took so long for them to add Rapunzel ( sometimes)......., not even mention where are other girls....

A very nice and well thought-out argument :) But the lines of reasoning about being a "serious character" and lacking a strong love interest don't seem to apply to Elsa because she is also more of a serious character, and she doesn't have a love interest in the movie, and yet she seems to be super popular (though I suppose her popularity could wane in the future, or perhaps the popularity of the movie and the sheer fabulousness of Elsa's outfits might outweigh these other factors ).

Sorry to be a kill-joy but could someone start a new thread for this discussion, I just skimmed over several pages with very little actually related to Frozen merchandise. Something this involved not only deserves its own thread but also clogs (for lack of a better word) up a merchandise sighting and discussion thread.

Is Tiana African American? I prefer to think she's a Black American, since they dont specify in the movie.

Not to nit pick but if you're gonna classify ever princess, mulan is not Asian. She is Chinese.

I know we have lots of white princesses, but my beef is that most of them are blondes or redheads and most have blue eyes. I really want more to have Belle's colorations. Pale white girl with brown hair, with either brown, hazel, or green eyes. I can't count Rapunzel because she's blonde for most of the movie. They could have made her a brown haired girl who's hair lights up and glows blonde with magic when she sings. I think we all just want someone to look like ourselves.

That said, I've been wondering when they will do a Hispanic princess. She seems overdue. Also I am waiting for an African princess with a story set in Africa. I'm excited about Moana!

Sofia and her mom seem almost Hispanic, but they could be white too. I think people of both groups relate to her so well because you can picture yourself as her if you are white, or if you are Hispanic.

Frozen is not racist. The story takes place in an area where people would have lighter skin. They could have had different hair and eye color, but for Elsa I would have picked the pale shades to go with her icy nature over anything darker. Anna could have looked different if they wanted.

I get that people want darker haired princesses and im all for that but the one thing I don't agree with is trying to make rapunzel or saying rapunzel should of had dark hair. No no no. Rapunzel has and always been blonde. It is like half the point of her story!!!! She's been one of my favorite fairy tales as a child and I would of been utterly furious if they had made rapunzel a dark haired princess even though that would of made her look more like me. No. Rapunzel is suppose to have that long flowing gold hair. I'm more than happy with how Disney did it and had her become a brunette at the end when they cut her hair.

Okay vent over. I'm sorry if I offend anyone but it is one of my all time fairy tales so I'm gonna defend it. But on a side note I would love to see more brunette princesses in the future!!!

The great thing about the princess lineup is there's representation for just about every demographic. If they do make a Latina princess, though, the story NEEDS to relate to the culture. Just forcing some girl to be Hispanic for the sake of ethnicity (I'm looking at you, Tiana) doesn't work.

Thank you +1000!!!!

Is Anna brunette? Her dolls are kinda gingery but in the movie it's like a light brown, isn't it? Meh we're really getting caught up in this color topic lol.

To answer the question about Tiana's ethnicity, I always understood that Americans say African American no matter what country their ancestors are from, but I could be wrong because in Canada I only hear people refer to skin color (black, white, brown) or specific (Chinese, Indian). I have NEVER heard someone called African Canadian.

Sorry that I keep contributing to this derailment, but I'm kind of enjoying the conversation. I grew up in a multicultural city, so I think I've always loved disney for being so about international unity (it would explain my obsession with its a small world)

Anyway...

So, I am pretty sure I just have really bad luck with buying Frozen items. I went on the Disney Store website to buy the Animator Kristoff, but I also wanted to get the PVC Frozen doll set. I put it in my cart, and was going to finish the process, but my baby woke up, screaming (now she's teething I think), so it took her a while to fall back asleep. Within that time, apparently it sold out, because I went to finish checking out, and it said I could not add that item any more because it was out of stock. Wow. Well, at least I got the Kristoff doll. Maybe it's for the best . . .

When exactly does the pre-order for the new LE dolls in the U.S. Disney Store online start on Jan. 10 (as in, what time do I need to wake up to order? :) ) Thanks in advance!

I hope the LE dolls definitely come out in march for the UK! I need time to save and I need to stop buying stuff from disney store when I can't afford it... Haha. Today in the mail I got:

Thats not entirely true! Rapunzel has been my favorite fairytale as well and her story dates back farther than the Grimm's version. One of the first stories of Rapunzel was a Persian tale and her hair was specified as raven black. Other early tales are based off of stories of real people and they do not mention hair color. The Grimms and a few other early writers popularized blonde, but she didnt start off that way. Hair color is not essential for Rapunzel like it is for Snow White.

Also, there are arguments made that her "golden" hair as referred to in her tales actually meant red hair, not blonde.

Sorry to get off topic again, I will stick to merchandise from here on.
