A better, brighter DSF lineup idea
While I'm not sure of all the logistics to make this work perfectly, but I think I actually like the idea of a lottery system.

Ideal:
1- You sign up online (or go into the store and sign up if they want foot traffic) starting a week before release.
2- You sign up with YOUR name, and YOUR Email address. Winners are notified by Email, must show ID to get wristband/voucher
3- The day before the release, 400 winners are randomly picked (see below for reasoning of 400)
4- Day of sale is as they do it now- show up by 5:30, in line, in numerical order. You flash your ID to prove you were the person signing up and get your wristband.

Here's a breakdown if rules and what I see are the benefits:
One pin of each type per person. That way more people that want these can actually get them.
Doing it this way prevents things like one person bringing a family of 5 + 8 friends so they can get 26 pins to sell on eBay. I see this as the main thing they have to stop... If you want to re-sell pins, that's fine. But coming up with ways to stock-pile 10% of the release is just ridiculous
#1 above prevents camping out, gives people several days to get to the store and sign up, and still gets foot traffic in the store in a reasonable fashion during normal business hours. Even cooler if they allow an online signup, but I can see how they'd like the extra bodies in the store.
#2 prevents someone from getting 100 different people to sign up for them. Unless those people are willing still come down and buy (this can't be completely eliminated I suppose), it won't do any good to have family members that live all over the US sign up for them. And you can't sell your spot if you win. If you win and you can't make it, then you don't get pins and your spot is automatically awarded to someone at the end of the line.
#3 Choose 400 winners (or 200 if you leave the sales 2-per person) so the first 300 are guaranteed a set, and the remaining 100 are already in place to get whatever is left... Also if some amount of numbers 1-300 don't show up, those spots are immediately filled by the 301+ peeps...
#4 works as always except for showing ID to prove you were the person that signed up.

For children without IDs, a parent with the same last name must be present, or the parent can sign up for them if the parent isn't into this whole craziness...

Pros- eliminates (or at least cuts down) the large groups camping out and buying up a large portion of the pins
Eliminates camping out all together
Gives people with limited free time a chance to get pins

Cons- Well, eliminates camping out to guarantee you get pins... There's no way to insure you get them, it's all down to chance.
In some ways, more work for the DSF employeees... Maintaining a list, contacting winners, checking IDs... The ID thing could be scrapped, but then I see the problem of people getting every single person they know to sign up just to give them a better chance at winning a slot... The list, drawing and contacting could be automated, but that system would have to created/purchased and maintained...
If 10,000 people actually sign up, chances of winning are of course rather small...

There's probably more Pros/Cons, but I thought I'd throw this out there and see what people think... It's a system that has been used for ticketed events many times in the past, and seems to largely work well and helps cut down scalpers (sharks). It'll help some (people that can't camp out anyway), it'll hurt some (people that live for camping in alleys), but might be the fairest solution that works for everyone, even if you don't really like it.

I completely agree J'aimie. If it wasn't for two generous members on this forum. There would be no way that I could get the Rapunzel & Flynn heart from my husband nor could I get him the Carl & Ellie pin. Both will be keepers and forever cherished from whom is getting them for us.

Id have to agree 100% but it doesn't matter what dsf does someone will always be unhappy and have something to complain about. :crazy:I think releases that generate a lot of attention and crowd should only be surprise releases but what do I know I've only been to one lol

True, limited it to 1-per would reduce this... But there's still a lot of people that really want one or two of the pins for themselves and are still willing to part with the others in the series... I frequently go to releases that I don't care about at all and buy 2 sets of all the pins available and offer them all here at cost. I do that _just_ for the people that can't get to the store, and don't want to pay eBay prices... If it was 1-per, then I'd only be able to do that for 1 person, but I'd still do it.

Unfortunately, there isn't a solution that will please everyone... Some people like, some people hate the way it is now. Some people will like, and some people will hate _any_ change that's made... It's more about choosing the lesser of two evils...

I actually don't really like the lottery system I suggested above since there's no way I could guarantee getting a pin if I really had to have it... But I still think it's the fairest thing to do (especially if the desire is to eliminate camp-out lines...)

There's no way to insure you get them, it's all down to chance.

Sorry, I do not want some computer telling me I can or cannot buy pins. And neither does anyone else. I have said before, the whining would be about how its not fair that "(insert any name) didn't get selected or after a few, "(insert any name) got selected for every release, and I haven't even once" NO THANK YOU.

FIrst come First served has been and always will be the fairest way to go.

If you go to the dmv, have to stand in line all day because you didn't make an appointment, get there first, and there are 100 people behind you? How pissed off will you be if they come out and say" We will be starting with #98 today and then rolling back to number 1" ? Anybody would be LIVID and a bold faced LIAR if they said otherwise!!!

I don't know DSF, but maybe it's an idea to do the same like Paris does with their PTN's? We do get a date for the PTN but we don't know what will be released untill we are there to line up. Just a thought

This entire comment has been the only one on this thread I 110% agree with. Also: big thanks for being one of those buyers who makes them available for the rest of us. <3

This one is the super evil, totally benefits DSF and the lucky few, and will make the winners and losers cry:

Exclusive Cool Kids Club = Membership similar to Club 33

Big lottery to choose the lucky 150
Once chosen, the CKC member will be required to purchase their allotted two pins for each release or lose their spot in the CKC. At which point the Waiting List is employed and the new member picks up where the previous member fumbled. All non-purchased pins, due to CKC fumble are randomly sold to a secondary lottery winner.
CKC member keeps their virtual spot until such time as they are unable to purchase their allotment of pins.

Pros: No lines ever again. All CKC members are chosen via initial lottery or fumbled pins sold to those on waiting list. DSF makes guaranteed sales and there is never a character pin that is not sold out.

Cons: CKC members will go broke, if they don't figure out how to unload the unwanted pins quickly. Massive crying by those who weren't chosen or who never get on the waiting list. Nobody in their right mind would go for this.

Do I win the "No Camping" prize?

Ooh, interesting idea

I think edition sizes should be larger, and it'd would also be nice if some were reserved to be sold online so that people that live nowhere near DSF have a change to get a pin at cost.

They don't have a online store

I like the idea of a sign up sheet. What they could do is, they could announce the pins the day before the release and who ever signed up for them would be first to get them. After the release you could sign up for the next one to avoid multiple trips to the DSF.

I do not like the idea of 1 pin per person, If I was there I would want to buy multiple pins.

I agree with the higher edition for some of the pins, but some should remain low.

I love Lamorak's Idea!!!!!!! Except for the Lottery part. Just a campout for registration is all thats neededLOL!!! I could see the mob on registration day!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm.... Modify the lottery with a cash buy in? First 150 to come up with $10k wins a spot?

How about Marquees as GWP for being within the first 300 to buy a VIP seat to the coinciding movie???That way the theater side makes more money as well.

Actually, I disagree with 'and neither does anyone else'. This system is used for all kinds of events, and yes, people complain... But you know what? Life goes on...

_I_ don't think it's fair that people that have 9-5 M-F jobs can't get pins _AT ALL_. I can't take all day Thursday and possibly all day Fri off to sit in line for pins. I guarantee you I can find just as many people to complain about the current system as you can find to complain about the lottery system...

Again I state- THERE IS NO SOLUTION THAT WILL PLEASE EVERYONE.

How do you honestly think that a system that gives an equal opportunity for _everyone_ is not more fair than a system that only favors people that can spend 12-24 hours sitting in line? The lottery systems gives everyone an equal chance at getting the pins. The camp-out system does not, some people simply can not do that...

First come First served has been and always will be the fairest way to go.

See comments above. No, this system is almost always never fair. It favors people with more time to spare, with insider information, with more money (in situations were bribes could be paid), etc, etc...

If the policy of the DMV was that out of all the non-appointment people that show up, the order will be randomly chosen, then I'd have to deal with that. No one would have a _reason_ to be upset since they know that's how it works...

There's also the slightly more realistic concept that most people _HAVE_ to go to the DMV since for many driving is a requirement of their daily lives.
This is about pins... It's a hobby, it's fun, it's entertaining... No one _needs_ to have them.
A better example would be a limited edition release of a highly desired action figure at specialty toy store... And guess what? They frequently do lotteries (drawings) for things like that... And it works well. Sure, people walk away empty handed, but that's just part of the hobby. If you collect something that they only make 300 of, and 4000 people want them, a LOT of people are going to have to deal with the fact that they will never own it... But the hunt is still part of the fun!

So then if there is no solution that will please everyone as you stated, then why are we even having this discussion. I work 9-5 too, however I am able to take the time off needed to go to some of these events, not all. I missed out on avengers and paid on the ebay market to get the pins I really wanted. Did I whine about it? NO I did what I needed to to get the pins. Are ebay prices over inflated, YES!! why because sellers know how badly people " neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed these pins. they know they will get the money? What is the price right now on ebay for the finding nemo marquee? around $30 - 35??? Why? because not as many people care!!!!!! the world doesn't end for people if they don't get their nemo marquee? or their Chimpanzee marquee.

The DMV is a valid example because people "neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed" these pins. Read any post about a new pin and someone 'neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeds" it! Just like people "need" to drive.

I know, but they should. It's not like it's that difficult to make.

I would love to see online sales. However....

Cons:
The server would crash due to the high number of people trying to buy. Their phones would ring off the hook with pissed off people because the website didn't work and they didn't get their pin.

DSF would not get the foot traffic they rely on for other sales.

Trying to think outside the box here: How about they announce a pin and a date. On that date you show up at 5am and get in line. At 7am no more people are allowed in line. After the line is closed hand out pens and order forms to everyone in line. Those paying by card fill out the form and drop it off. Those paying by cash wait in line. Everyone can order 2 pins per design. They then ask the factory to make the number of pins ordered plus a few extra. So if 314 pins were ordered they could ask the factory to make 350. A month or two later you show up and pick up your pins.

Pros: no campouts, no one leaves disappointed, pin will still be desirable because the number that show up to order will not likely exceed worldwide demand, allows them to offer less popular characters without having to worry about extras sitting unsold on shelves, food and additional merchandise sales take place when people return to pick up pins, can use pick up days for trading events, they can still do surprise pins

Cons: those who cannot make it to order day are still subject to the whims of resellers, more popular pins will have higher LE number, harder for traders to figure out fair trades since pins from the same series may have different LEs

So then if there is no solution that will please everyone as you stated, then why are we even having this discussion.
Because, this discussion isn't about _pleasing_ anyone, it's about making the pin release more _fair_ to everyone. There's a big difference... More fair means giving everyone an equal chance. If you don't honestly believe that it should be fair for everyone, then that's a fundametal difference in the way we think, and probably the end of our discussion...

I don't really understand what you think the word 'need' means, so most of the rest of your post didn't make a lot of sense to me...

But since you love the DMV example, here's another way to think about it:
People line up outside the DMV before it opens, sometimes for more than an hour. If the DMV used a lottery system for non appointed customers, those lines wouldn't exist. People would just show up 5 minutes before opening and wait for their number to be called... Equal chance for everyone, no one has to line up early...
(and another reason the DMV example doesn't work: you can come back the next day for the same thing... Or the next day, or the next one...)

Not sure if any one has said this. I am going to go back and look right now.

But. Seems to me that there is a very easy and no stress way to fix everything. I think the best way is online drawing for wristbands. just like they did for the DLR ginger bread pins a while back. There is not line to camp in. and everyone has the same chance of getting a pin. The way it worked last time. you got a email that said to come get your wristbands. than u could go get your pin. No reason to rush or fight.

nice and easy and no stress or trouble when they did it this way. :wiggle::hsd::wiggle:

You know Theresa reads DPF right? She's mentioned to me in the past that she has read my posts. Luckily I was trying to help DSF situtation, not call them arrogant.

My idea is to have everyone sign up for a DSF shopper number. Almost like an annual pass or D23 membership. Then when a release is announced, have everyone enter their number and have it randomly drawn. Make sure you use their ID, or parents ID in the store when you sign up. Or if you sign up online you must email in a valid ID photocopy. That way you can ensure noone signs up twice or with a bogus ID. Then you overdraw the release. Let everyone in group 1 know they get X pins, and group 2 is on stand by day of. I also suggest you make the popular pins in higher LE sizes. So for the chocolate boxes for example. Make Tangled and Up LE500/600/750, make LatT and Robin Hood 300. So group 1 is guaranteed all 4 pins and group 2 is guaranteed Tangled & Up but they are higher LE. Kinda like the Gears Up event at DLR. There were some that were low LE and some high. Everyone that got a wristband, gray or orange, was for sure getting pins, just some would be sold out before wristband 2. There can still be a stand by line but it's almost a lock that nothing will make it past the first 200-300 people so only a few would come early for 2nd chance. Or people that forgot to sign up.

Yeah, that's sort if my idea (see top post on this page). There's been an argument against 'online only' since the DSF is a store and they like having an excuse to increase traffic in the store... So make the sign up take place in the store over the course if a week or so, and then the drawing... That way the store crowd is spread out too, rather than mobbing the place all at once.
