Auction Rules? Opinions? Thoughts?
It's been brought up in another thread, but the bumping is getting a little out of control...posts to acknowledge every single bid, repeated posts urging people to bid, etc. (it doesn't have to say 'bump' to be an obvious bump). On the last day, however, I don't have a problem with a couple of extra bumps to say 'last 4 hours', 'one more hour', etc.

We are currently working on this issue. We hope to see a decrease in this behavior in the very near future!

...and another question that has come to mind lately (sorry I'm hijacking the thread, but Grim suggested we bring up any other auction issues):

Let's say I'm running an auction and there is a bid I like, but I'm concerned about trading with that member (no feedback, bad feedback, whatever)...is it OK to place a condition that the bidder would have to mail first? I wouldn't suggest raising the issue in the auction thread. What I have in mind is a PM to the bidder, copied to a MOD, asking for an email address to check Dizpins references and/or saying that the bid will be considered if the member agrees to mail first if (s)he wins the auction.

This case could be handled by asking a moderator (or Judy or me) to act as a go between (both parties must agree) - each party would send their pin(s) to the go between who then verifies that the pins are correct, repacks them and then sends them on to the two parties. I have done this for a few people here and the person who started the auction has paid for the additional postage.

That's a good idea, but since it requires the agreement of both parties the auctioneer would have to verify the bidder's willingness before deciding who wins...otherwise it doesn't solve the problem.

I have only done one auction ever, but in the initial post I explicitly stated that if a bidder had little or no feedback, I would ask them to mail first, and if they were not okay with that they should not bid on my auction.

So protect yourself, but be up-front about it. :)

I was in this exact situation last summer. I only know it as last summer because I was at a baseball game. I got bumped out of first place with around 5 minutes to go (if memory serves correctly). I took all I had, but I got another bid in on the cell phone, but it came in at 8:00 flat. I got a pm from the auctioneer a few minutes later saying he was in a quandary because if the bid was allowed it would win. I don't think anyone wanted to ruffle feathers, so I bowed out. I'm just glad I forgot what the pin was, LOL.

It'd be great if it was stated one way or the other. Whether it's a global rule that is covered under "DPF Rules" or specifically stated by the auctioneer, which I've seen done too.
