DisneyStore Limited Edition 17" Dolls Discussion
As someone who has only recently started to collect Disney dolls / figurines, I have found all of your insights to be quite informative. Thank you. The various YouTube reviews of the previously released LE dolls have given me a decent idea of their overall build quality. Despite the unfortunate issues with the upcoming set of Frozen dolls, they still present a decent value proposition at the retail price, at least to me. I'm sure I'll be very impressed with them anyway as someone who has not had the privilege of experiencing the dolls from the first 2 sets. With any luck, I hope to grab all 3 online in a few days.

I agree that a petition over the price of one item is nonsensical and somewhat overkill. Disney is a company and can do and charge whatever it wants and will continue to do so as long as it makes money. People aren’t obligated to buy anything. However, I don’t think the argument that Disney is in business to make money should mean the company’s decisions are above and beyond criticism from its customers.

And is it really that upsetting to people if someone says that a doll does not look like it is worth the price? Or that many of us would like to see other dolls besides Frozen? Or to point out that quality has gone down while prices have gone up? Are we all supposed to smile and nod like Stepford Wives, no matter what Disney dishes out? Someone expressing an opinion is not preventing anyone else from purchasing these dolls if they want them. Nor are such statements personal criticisms of fellow doll collectors who like or want the dolls. If someone loves a doll and thinks it is worth $2000, they certainly don’t owe anyone an apology or should feel the need to explain themselves.

My main issue over the Wedding Doll is not that it costs $500, it is that apparently Disney is charging a ridiculous amount for a plastic doll mass produced in China solely based on the edition size, which they control. The prices of dolls on the secondary market are driven up by a natural demand; Disney is attempting to purposely force demand and create a frenzy on these products by making such a low number and using that as an excuse to charge $500. Is this a brilliant business decision? No doubt. Is this manipulating and taking advantage of customers? Yes, and anyone would be naive to think otherwise. Most people tend to get angry when they sense they are being manipulated, and I believe this is a primary source of the frustration over the latest doll announcements. People know when they're being had. Elite products are usually expensive for a good reason. A Rolls Royce is one thing, but if a dealer tried to sell you a Toyota for the same price just because he slapped a shiny rhinestone-encrusted medallion on the front, you’d laugh in his face.

While I don’t believe the retail price of the regular LE dolls will increase in the near future, I can see the quality of the dolls going down and Disney creating a more expensive new “Platinum” line of dolls of the exact same quality that the dolls used to be when they started out. I don’t think this observation is premature. It is already happening. The quality of the new Frozen dolls already appears to be considerably lower compared to the Frozen dolls released just a year ago. They’ve already started holding back quality on the regular LE’s with the release of the Harrods dolls.

Perhaps Disney will release more information that will justify the $500 price tag on the Wedding Doll and I will stand corrected on its worth, but as of now, they have only released photographs with limited information, and by appearances, the doll really doesn’t look that much different from the 12” doll beyond the addition of eyelashes and some rhinestones. Personally, I think the butterflies on the skirt are a really lovely touch. But if the doll was made with special or expensive materials, wouldn’t it be in Disney’s best interests to advertise that? It is my understanding that most companies try to promote the best qualities of their products, not hide them. If the doll had looked significantly different or if Disney had released more information about the doll and why it was priced as such (beyond the 500 LE size) I believe there would have been far fewer complaints.

I’ve been a devoted Disney fan my entire life — one of the main reasons is because the Disney brand used to be synonymous with quality and outstanding customer service. Disney stood apart from other companies for these very reasons. However, in the past couple of years I feel these values have been tossed aside for the bottom line.

Sure, there have always been and will always be people who cannot afford Disney products or afford a Disney vacation, but Disney continues to offer less and less for more and more money. This has also become extremely prevalent in the parks, with add-ons and up-charges for nearly everything now. They have taken away things that used to be available to anyone who purchased a park ticket, slapped an extra charge to it and now made it exclusively for the ultra-wealthy and elite. They charge upwards of $300 for events that offer little more than the ability to purchase their products for even more money. This strategy has been extremely successful — Disney stock has nearly doubled over the past year. This is all great for stockholders, but as a customer, I can’t say I’m ever going to be happy to be getting less than I was getting before and being charged more money for it.

Of course, the flippant response is usually “then don’t purchase the dolls,” and I guess when I’ve finally had enough of it, I will quit. But I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of these dolls and really would like to continue to do so without seeing a decline in product quality and/or to feel I am being forced out of the hobby because I’m not part of the wealthy one percent.

Sorry for the long post.

Very well said and I agree 100% with you.

The way I see it is anyone who doesn't own a previous 17" doll will be more excited about this collection because it gives them a chance to own one of these dolls as the right price (the frozen ones anyway). Anyone who does own some of these dolls may be underwhelmed by them, but won't want to miss out on a Frozen doll. We've been spoilt with the attention to detail on previous dolls which seem to lack on the new ones. I wonder how much the design team has changed since the start of these dolls and more so Alice/Snow White.

Im in the I can't wait for Jasmine camp, so although I'll be giving these a miss I'm still excited for the build up and for you guys to get them as a fellow collector.

Great post amm3h!

As far as i'm concerned, there are better dolls out there that are designed with much more details quality, but are cheaper.

Disney hasn't done a formidable job on this occasion, so the price is a little too much ! Hopefully, I will be more impressed by the future releases but for now I will put my money elsewhere.

I've just been reading the blog again and has anyone noticed they've removed the "Platinum" from the announcement - I'm sure it was there in the beginning?

Thank you for watching my channel! I appreciate that lol. So will these be your first Frozen dolls then??

Yes indeed! :D I cannot wait. I haven't ruled out ever trying to find the other four one day, but for now I'll be happy to have this set. :)

By the way, when you were able to see the Frozen dolls did they also have the Cinderella ones out yet?

I'm still not sure whether to buy Anna or wait for better dolls such as Frozen Fever. I'm hesistant because this set isn't as nice as the previous two but at the same time I missed out on them so maybe this one could make up for it? :(

I wish Disney would put up some close shots already and also pictures of them in their boxes so I could decide.

Thanks. :) I wrote my post mostly in response to so many people seemingly offended by collectors' many criticisms and complaints of the Frozen dolls and the price of the Wedding Cinderella. I don't think that when people make comments about not liking something or disagreeing with a price they are necessarily trying to be negative. Sometimes it is a critique and sometimes it is just out of frustration. I think people have very legitimate reasons for being disappointed with these dolls.

Anyway, I hope everyone is successful in getting the dolls they want! :)

Ahhh thank you! I thought I was going mad, I tried to find that page on the UK site but had no luck. So I guess my next question is did they not add platinum to the USA blog? That's where I was looking earlier.

GlassParasol - if I was hesitant I would buy these ones, I just think if another set comes out later on you can always sell these ones on and you would always make your money back on them. The last thing you'd want is not to buy these and then they don't release frozen fever (though unlikely!)

I know, if I knew that they were going to release Frozen Fever LE's, I don't think I'd get Anna and Elsa from this set. The only one I know for sure I'm definitely getting is Kristoff because he's never been done as an LE before. Anna is a maybe. Elsa is the one I'm least sure of. I'm not going to make a decision until I see them in person. I wish they'd release photos of the boxes too.

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure. The first announcement I saw of these dolls was the one from the UK page and that stuck in my mind. They took the US blog post down for a short while after they initially posted it and then reposted it later. I can't remember if they had it in the original US blog post or not.

2 more days for the uk people and the store dolls! I can't sleep and i feel anxiety lol. I hope every collector will get the dolls who he or she wants. and the mean people who only do it for money get nothing! 3 more days for US :D i wish we could see the boxes :(

Is there anyone here who has successfully purchased dolls in store in London? I was just wondering if anybody could offer any comparisons of experiences or opinions as to whether it is best to hit Harrods or Oxford Street?

Thanks!

Well if you search Disney limited edition doll on eBay under the Disneyana category there are people trying to sell the new Frozen dolls already for $300 -$700... Really I am new to these LE dolls but that's ridiculous for a doll that's not even out yet

I actually really like the wedding cinderella so opinions... Should I jump the gun and pay the $500 because I'm willing to bet it will immediately sell for over $1000... /:

You are correct there is someone trying to sell it on eBay for $ 1,500 if I remember correctly. The dolls not even out and already going for an insane amount of $$$

If you really do like her, and think she is worth the $500, then go for it now. Getting her for her retail price is probably the cheapest you are ever going to find her.

Okay so after looking at the Frozen dolls again today, I think I may have been a bit harsh with my first "review" of them. The outfits are a bit more detailed than I first credited them. Still not a huge fan of the pearly skin or tinsel, but looking at them again makes them grow on me quite a bit! <3

How about Kristoff? There's no way I'm getting another set of the girls (sine there'll probably be
more, better releases in the future) but I'm considering MAYBE getting Kristoff if he looks nicer than the promo pics.

Great to hear! Do you find that the stock photos accurately represent the hair color on the new Elsa doll? It does seem to be a tad darker than the platinum blonde color that was used for the previous dolls. This is not much of an issue for me, but just curious! Thanks.

So I have never done an LE doll release online before how does it work? Is there a link on this site that I can follow or do I just bring up the Disney store page and search for the doll? I want to try and get the LE ball gown Cinderella but not sure the best way to go about it. Thanks for the help and happy collecting :wavey:

What I never understand are the people who buy these dolls on eBay before they are released without even trying to get them at retail.

If you know you want her, then you should definitely go for her now. I don't think you'll ever find her for retail again.

I think they so desperate to get them without knowing the direct link or search by item number. So, if they search it through new coming page, they probably won't have a chance to buy them at retail and they would buy it at a acceptable secondary market price before release.
