I disagree with this. 2D Traditional animation and 3D CGI animation are each extraordinarily difficult in their own rights. Neither is more impressive or superior. Each has their strengths and weaknesses. Personal preference is one thing, but you can't consider your opinion something that is factual and use that to determine that one is better than the other.
 

that sucks! In the UK we don't have many stores left and if my town had one id go at least twice a week! The shipping online is too much and more often then not I've Recieved items that should not have been sold in the condition they are in! I wish they'd open more stores
 
That's interesting. Do you know if closing them was for financial reasons or were they closing the older stores on purpose? Mine was one of the older models but I'm not getting my hopes up of it reopening there.

They didn't really tell us. We had a managerial issue though, so that could have contributed. We always made plan, so its not like the revenue wasn't there. Honestly I think its just a vanity thing, and that they are ashamed of some of the older models.

I honestly dont think that most Disney Stores do very well in terms of sales. With most people just going online to buy items it makes more sense for Disney to close stores and just sell online to reduce the cost of having to pay for staff and other overheads. I believe that the issue is that there are a lot of fans around and people that would love to buy merchandise from Disney Store but we are all over the world and some of the Disney Stores located around the US whilst have their regular customers are not located in large tourist locations or in locations where there is a constant flow of customers. As a result it just does not do as well.

Also I dont think Disney Store is as profitable a sector as other Disney sectors such as the theme park or the studios. To be honest I thought that the Disney Store was the same as the stores within the parks until I realized that they are a completely different division all together. I noticed that Disney does not put that much resources (i.e funding and research and development) into the Disney Store hence why the poor shipping arrangements with UPS and lack of communication between the actual store and the warehouse. Until the recent growing popularity of the LE dolls the Disney store was a downward spiraling division of the Disney Corporation and probably would have been closed completely had it not been for some large stores like Times Square that was popular enough to warrant continued operation and with the rise in popularity of the LE and designer dolls this has given Disney a new way to market the Disney Store.

I gotta be honest prior to the LE and designer dolls there is probably very little I would have bought from the Disney Store, yes the merchandise was great and there was lots of it but how is it different to the theme parks? It wasnt until the LE and designers that I started paying attention to the site as they were items only exclusive to the Disney Store.

I wouldnt be surprised if Disney started closing down most of their Disney Stores throughout the US leaving open the core stores and then pushing more of an online emphasis with these purchases. I just hope if they do this that the cost savings from having fewer stores will be used to better improve the shipping and warehouse facility.
 
The Disney Stores have been closing many stores in recent years and in the past they have been known to close stores and re-open them again years later in the same mall or plaza. I lived in PR for a couple of years and remember I was devastated to learn they were closing all 3 shops. 10 years later they opened 2 DS on the island and one of them is in the same mall. They do downsize if certain stores are not selling well, but some of them will open up again in the future, its a common practice that they have. The only ones that will most likely never see a closure are the touristy ones as Polaris mentioned because the foot traffic is more than enough. However, the stores closing isn't necessarily due to poor sales. They sometimes close certain stores to venture into new areas or certain places have time contracts will not be renewed in the same location. To be honest the DS has always been one of my go to shops for years, the only reason I go to the mall is to go to the DS. If I need to go shopping for anything I will go to my local town center. I pray for the day they add a DS there so I don't need to drive 40 minutes to the only we have near, although I gladly make those trips, its the Disney Store ♥
 
They had the same disney store in the mall from before I was born, I have so many memories of it, I hope they never close it. It would be a shame if all the stores ever closed.
As for the lion king don't get me wrong, I love it and it's deffo one of disneys top 20 films made, but I feel it's overated and Tlm & Beauty and the beast were superior and honestly think Frozens much better..
 

Exactly my opinion. I like both for different reasons and if I had to pick just one movie I couldn't
 
There was a Disney Store on Maui about 11 + years ago. It was not open for very long, but I loved taking my daughter there. The only Disney Store that I know of in Hawaii is in Ala Moana Shopping Center. Hope that one survives the cuts. It is a shame to know that so many are closing. Sorry to all of those who lost employment due to it . ~Makes me realize the outer Hawaiian Islands will never have a chance of one reopening again.
 
I don't think you can compare the classic Disney movies with the most recent ones. It's not really fair in terms of technology, animators, etc… And certainly not in terms of phases in the Disney movies. The Lion King is one of the blockbusters and highly acclaimed movies from the renaissance phase, you can't really go and compare it with Frozen, a fully 3D computer animated movie, imo.

Yeah, that can explain it. I just don't see why you can enjoy both lol. People always want to compare, I'd just like to see the Disney movies as a journey to where they are now. I have my favourites, but I can't compare the early movies with the recent ones. They're all Disney so that's fine by me.
 
I will say though that frozen for me made me feel similar to what lion king makes me feel. So frozen is my second favourite disney movie. The others just don't strike a cord in the same way. I enjoyed little mermaid, beauty and the beast etc but they aren't up in my top faves. It's just personal opinions though. People like different things
 
I guess for me it's cause when I was younger lion king scared me :lol: so I didn't see it properly til I was 16, whereas all the other renaissance films I watched when I was little on repeat! Especially batb! But I've always loved the princess movies so I guess that's why I love frozen so much!!!

Ive kind of been both hehe But for some reason i was terrified of simba :S! I loved all of the movies that came out in the 60s and 70s too like robin hood, 101 dalmations etc! they were my favs too hehe

When I was a child I preferred the animal movies over most princess movies (I only liked Ariel, Belle and Mulan),
but now after I've fallen in love with Disney again as an adult, I only like the princess movies XD
 
Of the renaissance movies, the age that I grew up with, these are my favorites, list wise.

1. Lion King
2. Little Mermaid=Beauty and the Beast
3. Hunchback of Notre Dame
4. Tarzan
5. Mulan
6. Pocahontas
7. Aladdin
8. The Rescuers: Down Under
9. Hercules

As much as I love The Lion King, I don't think the songs are as good as the other renaissance movies. The animation, score, and story however, are amazing.
I will say this though. The more I watch The Lion King the less it's value becomes to me, mainly because of the treatment it's getting from people. Every animated movie is a kid's movie to them, but the Lion King is a movie for all ages where everyone can watch it and get obsessed over it and it would be normal.
Soundtrack wise, Hunchback def. steals the award. It is the best soundtrack Disney has over come out with. Every song is accompanies by amazing orchestration and lyrics (with the exception of "A guy like you") and their themes are darker and more down to earth.
Score wise, Pocahontas is the best.
Hercules is just not a favorite of mine. The only good thing about the movie are the muses. I hate Go the distance.
 
I'm going to be honest and say I've never really cared for Lion King and don't get the hype that it has, same thing with Toy Story. Yeah it okay to me but I've always liked other Disney animal movies more than it. I've always preferred the movies with humans and am a princess girl but I've always loved Lady and the Tramp and Aristocats too, probably because they're domestic animals and not wild animals. Don't throw tomatoes at me!
 
The funny thing is, when you're a kid, you don't realize how old some Disney movies are because they get rereleased so often! But if we're talking the era of 1989 (TLM) to 1999 (Tarzan), yeah, I agree those movies are pretty much unbeatable and had the best songs.

Obviously we all have our biases, but TLK might seem overrated to anyone who was a kid when it came out, just like people might feel the same way about Frozen in 10-15 years. I remember TLK backpacks, toys, stationary, plates--God, it was EVERYWHERE. Just like Frozen is now.

One reason TLK did so well is because it's gender neutral. Boys and girls liked it equally and they wore the merch proudly. I never got into the TLK craze, and I especially didn't love the music. Lists are fun. Here's mine:

1: Hunchback (my alltime favorite movie, not just Disney)
2: Hercules
3: Aladdin
4: Tarzan
5: Mulan=Pocahontas
6: BatB=TLM
7: TLK
8: Rescuers Down Under (I'm not sure I saw this until the bluray 2-pack came out. It was all riiiiiiiight)

I agree with lord about the Hunchback soundtrack. I loved almost every song from the very first time I heard it, Topsy Turvy I loved from the trailer. As a kid I hated Esmeralda's song (so boring, and why does her voice sound so weird all of a sudden?!), but I appreciate it as an adult. I also really loved the Hercules soundtrack, it was so upbeat and fun. Before those movies, I used to moan every time a song came on--until they grew on me.

And then Atlantis came out, the day Disney music died...

The thing with Frozen's soundtrack is that it is not balanced well.
They've got Let it Go which breaks every other song (in the public's eye) and thus overshadows them all. Most of the people I know who have seen frozen only listen to let it go. This is one of those times when something is so good, that it ruins everything within it's vicinity.
 
The 89-99 era is awesome. It's the renaissance era for a reason.
My list would look like:
1. Mulan
2. Little Mermaid
3. Beauty & The Beast
4. Aladdin
5. Tarzan
6. The Lion King
7. Hercules
8. Pocahontas
9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
10. The Rescuers: Down Under (does it even count? XD since it's a sequel)

I never got the hype about "Alice in Wonderland", "UP" and "Brave"... which I guess is the good thing about Disney - there's a movie for everyone
