I thought I put my answer already. Glad I did not totally miss my chance to guess. I will go with 1166.

Okay, so let me try this again..

The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is... 42.

But, since you're not asking that question.. I have three more guesstimates as to how many pin backs are in the bag: 1,596; 1,429; and 1,270.

..and if I take the average of my five guesses, I get 1,482.6.

Therefore, my official guess is: 1,483 pin backs are in the bag.
