Official Moana Merchandise!

That stinks to hear that its simplified a bit. I was gonna put her in that outfit if I got the singing doll so that's a little disappointing.

But to answer your question about Hei Hei, its because his entire character was kind of changed at the last minute. He was supposed to be really stubborn and mean in the original film, but they rewrote him several times to try and figure out how to get him to work. His final version is what you see in the trailer, where he is more comical. Disney probably already had stock art of him done (that is how he was revealed at D23 as well), so they didn't want it to go to waste.

Haha no way! They based the figure in the singing doll set off an older version of him? That's so funny. Like how last minute did they change him that toys were produced in his meaner likeness?

Yup lol! It was apparently so last minute that the change was made just a few months ago. That explains why they are still using older stock art and have some products where he looks a little angry. Its similar to how Anna and Elsa looked slightly different to their actual movie counterparts in some stock photos back when Frozen was coming out , because the film wen't through a lot of different rewrites and reshoots up until a few months before its release. Here is the article that talks about it if you wanna give it a read (though be warned that it has a very minor spoiler regarding something the character does in the film):

I wish we had merch of older versions of Elsa, especially with brunette hair!

(how much it sucks that she had brown shorter hair when she was evil, and when she had platinum short, and then platinum longer hair, she became more good/complex, is another story - but that's room to grow for Disney in the future). I'm glad though that there is at least some art of brunette Elsa I've found. That's my favorite Disney content of all! Since Frozen is such a huge title, maybe they will release some stuff like that on anniversaries for the hardcore enthusiasts

oops...sorry I forgot this was in a Moana-specific thread so let me get back on topic. I like the Moana merch a lot, but I'm hoping for some more higher quality stuff to come.

They could make an abalone and leather replica necklace that I would wear around, for example (I have a DFDC Snow White swarovski/gold plate apple necklace, and an LE swarovski/silver Elsa snowflake necklace, which I really enjoy). The journal is nice but a bit simplistic. I understand that's an intentional style but I like more "luxury feeling" stuff and they definitely could make an islandy-moana-accurate journal that feels more luxurious. I guess they won't - we should be thankful for at least one journal when the DFDC this year didn't get theirs, but maybe some other high quality moana stuff (along with the LE doll) is to come?

"Island heroine" is such a great theme with SO much potential...e.g., I am completely in love with the "baby moana & the ocean trailer". It's like a total dream to me, it fills my heart. A young girl finds her special connection to the ocean, it's like another loving parent to her (and I assume, more of an equal partner to her when she's older). I just love this so incredibly much and it is animated so very well. Everything about it is wonderful. I want merch merch merch that reminds me of that beautiful sequence! The toddler doll doesn't look quite right (eyes not huge enough?) but it's a good start, I will definitely get the mini if they make it...but I'm hoping for more more more!

Speaking of necklaces, you reminded me that after seeing the singing necklace and singing doll in person, the necklace that comes with the dolls is actually nicer and moms higher quality. So the singing necklace is a pass for me lol. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the Pua and Heihei set to hit stores.

Save the chicken that will never cease to amuse me. Hopefully the new version is a big hit. Given what they apparently had to go through. To not only keep him in the film but make sure his version fit.

It's just too bad that every time Disney attempts diversity people give them flak. Yet they release a movie with 2 white princesses and it's a global phenomenon. I hope they don't give up on inclusion in favor of the masses

They won't give up on diversity just because of this. It's good that they are willing to fix things when a sizable portion of the population represented are offended. It means they're serious about these movies and they're doing their best.

I thought of this also. It's not just white children who would wear the costume. Though I suppose Pacific Islanders wouldn't be any happier about, say, a black person from Europe wearing it. But it does deprive actual Polynesian children from dressing as someone like them, unless they make the costume themselves.

I just saw the singing doll and I love the accessories. I think I like it more than the classic doll, since the articulation in the arms is covered up.

So I finally got to see everything in person today! All the merchandise is GORGEOUS! I was so close to buying the classic doll, but I decided that I will get it later (maybe whenever they do free shipping for the release of the film or something). I can also say that the classic doll does looks nicer than the singing doll, and I still only want the set for the necklace. I am not about to pay $40 just so I can have the necklace, so if anyone gets the deluxe singing doll set and is willing to sell me the necklace separate please feel free to message me!

It's so nice to year the merch looks great, I can't tell on Disney's site anymore, some things I order I think look wonderful, then when I get them I'm disappointed, this has happened a lot with the dolls and some toys I have gotten for my kids, while other things I took a pass on I see in person and thought it looked amazing. I find myself going to UTube or here to find videos or photos so I can see the things. Disney Japan has never disappointed though.

I completely agree. I dunno who does the stock photos for Disney products, but they are usually SO much nicer in person than they are online. Like, I bought some ornaments in person today, and I was so in awe by how beautiful they look in person when compared to their stock photos. If you are interested in getting some of the Moana merch, I doubt you will be very disappointed with any of it once you see it in person. Its all very colorful and beautiful. And a lot of the merch (or at least the packaging for them) is environment friendly as a nice plus!

I was the exact opposite haha! Then again I bought only two ornaments and I had to look at three or so different ones for one of them before I found one I was satisfied with. But I figured most of them looked a lot better than the stock photos. Either way, I think that point still stands for a majority of their merchandise.

Hello: Any news about a Maui doll from Disney Store?
Greetings

I have no problem about their dolls so i guess they dont totally suck lol...i have an LE cinderella ornament and that one looks perfect...i guess it is because its LE so they gave an extra effort...i think its the face that they have trouble doing in their regular ornaments..if it doesnt involve a human face like the UP ornament(house with balloon) or winnie the pooh it looks good.

It's gonna be suuupppeerrr interesting to see how people will react to the tattoo set that they just released.

The ones included with several of the books? Not pleased, even though they are made up designs. The fact that indegenious tattoos are being used like that. For general consumption is problematic. Real tattoos are tribe specific and aren't intended for public use. As a Native person I wouldn't ink myself with Hopi or Tlingit tattoos. Unless, possibly if I married into one of those tribes.

Are we talking about the tattoos that were included with the recent novelization "The Story of Moana"? Because I seen that book at my local Wal-Mart yesterday and that was the only one with any kind of tattoos that I seen.

Not gonna lie, I was totally going to buy that book and wear the Moana and Maui silhouettes on my arm whenever I go to watch the movie. I would rather not spoil myself on the plot though so I decided not to. Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if someone ends up being upset over it, but I don't expect the uproar to be too serious or major like the shirts or costumes this time around. These tattoos aren't Maui's nor are they on any kind of skin tone. Not to mention that they look like the same kind of generic temporary tattoos you can find for kids pretty much anywhere. They are basically just silhouettes and generic fancy fake "bracelet/arm" designs.
