Hi everyone,

I'm a bit frustrated and hoping someone can help. I view DPF using Safari on a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and I've had ZERO problems until recently, chat stopped working. I assumed it was a Java update, which I performed, and now when I try to join chat, I get a "Missing Plug In" notification and nothing happens.

I have:

- Reset Safari
- Uninstalled/Reinstalled Java
- Cleared all settings on Java
- Tried troubleshooting via Apple and Java
- Googled the daylights out of this problem

I consider myself a pretty tech savvy person, and I've never had a problem go this long without finding a solution on my own. I could go to a Genius Bar appointment (I used to work for Apple and I'm pretty sure our protocol would be to just talk to Java) but I was wondering if any other Mac users were having the same problem with chat and how they got around it.

I reaaally don't want to use another web browser, but I will if it absolutely comes to it.

I've had this problem, too. I, also, thought I needed to update Java, so I did so. I also uninstalled/reinstalled Java and reset Safari. It just happened to me a few days ago, Thursday, I believe it was. Although, now I don't even get the "Missing Plug-in" notification. So now I'm not even sure if that's what it is. I got the notifications up until yesterday. I can click on the page, but I don't have the chat room box thing (if that makes any sense).
I hope someone can shine some light on this for us!
 

Yes!! It sounds like we're having the same problem, and my problem started right around Thursday, too. I still get the "Missing Plug-In" notification when I click on the link to the page, but no chat window.

I'm glad it's not just me, I was really worried I'd done something stupid. Haha!! Let's figure this out for each other!!
 
If you haven't already, check what the date on your computer and see if the dates reset back to 2002/1969? If so, it means the bios battery died and reset meaning the certifications aren't valid so to speak. This happened to to my powerbook g4 a-lot.

Ah yes, the infamous calendar problem. Haha, I've also had this happen to me, but not on this computer. My computer is MAYBE five months old, and all of that information checks out -- but it was definitely worth double checking, thanks for the tip!!
 
Try this if you haven't already:

Applications -> Utilities folder -> Java Preferences App -> (checked box) Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications
 
Hmm, interestingly enough (just now noticing this), Java doesn't show up under "Applications" in my Utilities Folder, but it does show up under the "Others" tray on System Preferences. I don't have the option to do what you've suggested, but I'm wondering if that's the problem...

Are you running 10.8?

I don't have Java under my Utilities either, and the calendar recommendation doesn't apply to me (I got my Macbook for Christmas). I don't think the link you provided applies to Macbook Pro's since I have enabled the Java runtime and I do still do not receive the plug-in/applet notice. I'm getting really worried/frustrated with myself and my computer. :rant:

I can't shed any light unfortunately but can confirm it isn't a problem accross macs I have Mountain Lion latest update and I had to update mine again yesterday so it is a problem that I had all I did was double click on missing plug in and followed the instructions. Sorry for lack of details but this is all it required me to do.
 

I have the same problem myself and I also have a Mac and use Safari. I think I have Snow Leopard... I never upgraded to Lion bc of the price... I haven't been able to figure out the issue either (I'm technologically challenged :/) so if anyone could shed some light it would be greatly appreciated Let's hope we don't have to DL another web browser; that would be such a pain!

Safari seems to be working now, I'm honestly not sure what happened. I had one final uninstall/reinstall of Java and it now seems to work... I just have been so busy I haven't been in chat! n_n

Thanks for everyone's help, I probably should have updated this to say that something magic happened and now chat works for me and my little Macbook Pro! <3 Thanks everyone!
 
OMG its because of this I havent been on chat for like 2 months or so! I just gave up and said I will go to the mac store soon to see why all of a sudden this was happening and I just kept pushing it aside lol Thanks for posting this!

Happy to help. I will say that I've run all my updates, and sometimes it lets me in, sometimes it doesn't. It's not your computer, it's Java. Once Oracle releases a patch that Apple deems secure, you can go back to chatting. Just keep running your system updates...
 
Yup I am using firefox on a Mac. I don't really like Safari or Chrome.
