In order for rules to have any meaning, there MUST be consequences if they're broken...otherwise it's pure chaos...
Being nowhere near dsf, i agree about following the rules but if people wait three days in line they should be first. If not, there will be chaos when the line is suppose to start. This might offend several people but this hobby is expensive in terms of time or money. Everyone here who waits also makes money for there time.
I think DSF stance is they are not on our property so they are not our problem. People can stand on the street if they want to until the police tell them to leave. But what happens at 7:45pm Friday? That is when 300+ people are gonna be gathered just to find out. Now I heard rumors DSF was going to allow them in the Alley after like 11pm or midnight last night (Can anyone confirm what happened?) and then DSF would shoo them out again this morning. That is basically allowing and approving the unofficial line to exist. I know the people in the front of those lines are all up in DSF and Security's ears trying to lobby on their behalf. "You have to honr us, we've been here 3 days." DSF should have told them "We will not honor this line, stay if you want, but you're not garaunteed a thing." Then, whoever does stay, give them the same chance as everyone that shows up at 7:45pm Friday to prove your point. Teach them a lesson for their deviance and rule breaking. Teach people that unofficial lines and lining up before your posted time will not be honored nor tolerated. The only way to do this though, and be safe, is to find a way so it's not a mob fest. At this point, only a raffle/lottery at 7:45pm is fair. The people that stayed did so on their own accord knowing they were not protected by any rules. They have no right to be mad if someone that comes at the posted time gets them and some of them do not. The rules only protect 7:45pm as the start time for this mayhem. I am going just to see what the heck happens. I dont' collect BT's but I can sure as heck trade those suckers. But I've already bought into the fact that I am probably just gonna do WDI, but that kind of show at 7:45pm should be on pay-per-view!!I got back to my initial suggestion of the I.D. proof-required online random drawing or a lottery at the time lineup was posted. Those are your 2 options. I prefer the online seleciton way where you have to show ID and you know if you're selected so noone is making trips at rush hour to Hollywood unncessarily. The lottery option while still fair, means you'll have 300 people crammed in and half are going home empty handed. However, with all the rumor spreading of surprise pins, I bet half those not-selected will stay anyways just for the possibility of a surprise pin. In that case, DSF has 225-ish people waiting overnight, 150 getting 2 sets for sure and a possible surprise pin, 75 people waiting on the hopes of a surprise pin and probably getting nothing, and then you get the 2nd chancers / morning-of surprise pin hopefuls growing your total to over 250 people by the time these things go on sale!I am not arguing with you. But the point is they shouldn't be lined up. They would not have had to line up for 3 days. If they did so choosing to break the rules. Well. But DSF needs to decide one and for all what they are going to do about these unofficial lines. They could easily send them home right now, and tell them to come back at the official time.
You guys....no one is "getting hurt" or is going to "get injured"....ha! Its more likely gonna be angry/hostile feelings and maybe nasty words if something goes down. Pretty sure no one has gotten in a real physical fight in a recent (2 years) DSF line.
I'd be more worried about the random hollywood crazies since this 3 day line is not sheltered by the alley and they are just basically loitering out on a public street. Blek.

We can blame the "rule breakers" all we want but it's DSF's duty to make sure those rules aren't broken in the first place. They are obviously condoning it or else they would have done something by now. This isn't a first time occurrence which is why it repeatedly keeps happening. Maybe we should be more upset that DSF doesn't keep their word? I feel the issue of lines forming early would be simple to solve if DSF actually stood by every rule they set and actually stuck to a time to line up and send people away if they do line up early and not honor any unofficial line. But I fear it's too late since they have already been letting this behavior continue for a while now.
I'm sure I'm not alone is saying that I have interest in both sides.
My wife is available to go stand in lines and she was quite happy with a single overnight stay. Once it escalated to two and three days, the enthusiam is no longer there, but you end up having to do it if you want any chance at the pins. In this scenario, waiting multiple days is not desired but it's what you have to do to get the pins.
It's really expensive to do this multiple line wait and she is getting sick of the time, stress, and worry, involved to get these pins. She's not in favor of a lottery, because she never wins anything. She's also not in favor of having to wait this long for pins that she likes or picks up for trade. She is beginning to threaten quitting DSF pins and switch to something else.
So, I have some hope that the unofficial line strategy works because she has already put in a ton of undesirable wait time for these pins and in my view, whether or not my wife was waiting in line or not, I still am of the opinion that if you waited that long for pins, you should be able to get them.
I have to work, but I also pick up pins for trade and for folks who are out of state and have zero chance of getting these pins. Maybe I'm completely crazy, but I sell to my out of state peeps at cost +tax +a couple of bucks per pin for shipping. I end up eating all the costs for time, gas, and parking. So these multiple day waits pretty much doom me to getting nothing, because I have to work and don't have the free time to go stand in line for multiple days. As a result, fair traders and at cost selling set is taken off the market. I too am getting tired of the whole DSF scene for multiple night waits. Don't get me wrong. I still think it's fun to hang out with friends for a reasonable amount of wait time. This has gone beyond what is worth it for me and probably my wife.
I know that I have stated, in the past, that I don't like the lottery. I'm not a very lucky kind of guy and have found that hard work garners me better results than pure luck. But I'm starting to get onboard with the whole lottery idea just for the simple fact that it should eliminate all this crazy wait time requirements and give me a better chance of picking up either a set for mysef and/or for my out of state peeps.
Unfortunately, I'm thinking that all the points for and against all the various ideas are pretty spot on. DSF isn't equiped to handle the volume and they lack the personnel to implement anything that would help to alleviate this mess. They will continue with the status quo, which will essentially make the work to reward ratio undesirable for both myself and my wife. We may end up going back to a simpler trading life and drop DSF out of the itinerary. I get the feeling that a lot of other people are starting to think along these lines too.
Good luck to those who are sticking this mess out. I'm going to try and keep my personal wait times down to a minimum and show up at the times I usually do, because that is as long as I am willing and able to wait. If I get pins so be it. If I don't, that's ok too. I'm just hoping that no one values these pins more than their health and safety and starts something that torpedoes the whole thing and no one gets anything ever again.
Stay safe, people, and good luck!
