Will Frozen be the next Tangled?
*deep breath*
I am going to defend this movie again. For the visual similarities, there are none. Anna, Elsa, Kristoph, and Hans all look drastically different from Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. In almost ever CG film, major characters have similar features (universally). 3D is still a "new medium" (when it comes to humans, for the most part). They are still learning how to make characters look drastically different from one another. Over time I think we will see shifts (for example, Dreamworks' "The Croods" had unique features for their characters, HOWEVER this worked because they were cavemen. The facial structures were very rugged and probably wouldn't flatter a princess or prince type character).

Not to mention the story is completely a polar opposite to Tangled.... Its a little early to judge a film that isn't even out yet anyways, in my opinion.

I think it has potential to knock Tangled out of the park. Brave may be flawed, but so is Tangled. No movie is perfect, and we shouldn't believe this one will be either. But I think it has a lot going for it right now. We have never really seen a sister dynamic, and I'm psyched for it. If Anna and Kristoph end up together, I don't really see it being the "main attraction" of the film. I think it would be revolutionary to have a movie centered around a relationship between two female family members. But as we have seen, that didn't go over well with the public for Brave. I suppose its just humorous to me; no one is ever happy. People want strong female characters, but when they are made, people are skeptical or diss the film, perhaps even before they have seen it. I don't know what to think about it anymore.

All I know is that I am expecting some gorgeous pins, and I will buy them for my collection because I am excited (if I can get my hands on any). I think hyping the pins when there is so much distaste for the movie seems bass ackwards. :dunno:

I hope this post doesn't offend anyone...I guess it just bothers me when people judge a movie to kingdom come before its out...people work very very hard to make these films, and it almost comes off as disrespectful.

Yes! As a seasonal CM, we already spoke about this last year and agreed this will freeze the Tangled pins. I know one thing for sure, I am going to be a completist starting with my movie ticket souvenir pin.
And Amy, I'm right there with you, to buy these Tangled pins at cheaper prices.

Thank you!!!!!! Finally someone who sees this movie the way I do! I agree with everything.... From the not tangled look alike. To the fact that there is a lot of hype over the pins even though mostly all I see from these threads are a bunch of hate for this movie. Kind of senseless to me... And I agree BIG BIG time that I dislike all the bashing on a film that hasn't been released yet. From someone who is an art/illustrations major there was a LOT of hardwork and time put into making this. Creating ice and all those translucent surfaces are not easy, not for any medium. This movie is a lot of people painstaking work. Wait to judge.

My personal 2 cents is that sadly, Frozen will NOT beat Tangled, but I do think it will do well by any pin trading standards and I'm sure we can see a surge in popuarity for both Anna and Elsa (my question is which sister will come out on top???). For starts, Frozen is guaranteed to be on some level of popularity, as others have said, there are so many characters in it that there isn't anyway that you can't like anyone. I mean, for Pete's sake we have 2 princesses with different personalities so if you don't like one, go for her sister :naughty: jk Although I do think Frozen so far seems to be really pushing Olaf as a character and I don't think Olaf will be a big hit (as big as Pascal) because, don't get me wrong I think Olaf is pretty darn funny, but there is something hilarious about a character that can be so funny and not say one word (like Pascal).

Nobody will know until it comes out, but I don't think Frozen will turn out anything like WiR. WiR was a movie that was destined to do mediocre at the box office due to it's demographic being boys who don't watch Disney films. The response on DPF was largely "meh" and barely anyone had any interest in watching the movie bar a select few. Heck, I think the only hell-bent WiR completionists before the movie came out on DPF were you, disneycrazee, and I (plus a few others) but either way there were far less than 10; the reason being that nobody was interested in WiR. After the movie spread like wildfire because everyone heard how good it was, it was too late and out of theaters hence why everyone saw it and fell in love with it on DVD.

That's why I think WiR surged after DVD sales, because not enough people saw it when it was in theaters. Frozen is Disney's next princess (Merida was from Pixar obviously as you know :lol so everyone and their grandmother's best friend's dog are going to see this movie so if it's a good movie, people will know it within a month of it's theatrical release.

This. My biggest complaint BY FAR with Frozen pins so far is the fact that I think so many people are dead-set on being Frozen completionists not because of the movie (if you really like the movie's trailer, then by all means go for it) but because they think it will be the next big princess (I think it will have a big princess, but not the next BIG thing) so they just want to get in on the hype that they missed on during Tangled and that's stupid to me, but maybe it's just me.

I think that all the hype over this release is what is killing Frozen honestly. The reason I think Tangled became so big is because nobody knew it was so good until it became too late and then it became a mad dash to collect all the rest of the Tangled pins that had been out for awhile that non-pin collectors bought in the $5 bin and such. With how many people are already lining up to be Frozen collectors, I guarantee you people are going to try and charge $200-$300 for the marquee alone right out of the gate because they want a profit and people aren't going to pay that which will slowly decrease the value of Frozen pins. At least Tangled gave everyone a fighting chance with the magical $5 bin...

My turn.

I've spent the better part of the year saying how I do not feel Tangled characters and Frozen characters seem alike in both appearance, personality and role. But to be completely honest, I didn't really take the time to watch Tangled enough to back this up. Tonight I did this. I took each of the 'matching characters,' and compared them on appearance, facial expressions, attitude, role, and even how they spoke and moved.

I looked for similarities and, while there are some, these characters are completely different. I've seen Frozen several times, and I've watched so many of the sequences on a daily basis that I know the Frozen ones very well. So watching Tangled for the first time in awhile, I just wanted to see if there were any times where I'm like: That is SO Anna!

There were none. Now I won't go into details - I'd like the movie to be publicly released.

As for pins, it's not really important. If you like the movie: collect the pins. If you do not like the movie: please don't collect the pins.

For the record, I love both Frozen and Tangled! Go movies with princesses and songs!

Very True Kupo. I never thought of the Pascal over Olaf concept in popularity.
Luckily, I have friends in Cali already lined up to help me without the huge price tag attached. That's if they get good numbers, but having one friend in particular that always succeeds, I'm not worried too much. And if one doesn't, another will. I personally like the reindeer. Now he is sweet.
I still think Tangled pin prices will fall.

Kupo you make a lot of sense!

Im so excited for this movie, the snow queen was one of my absolute favourite stories when I was younger, I love winter and I think the ice and everything will make the movie so beautiful. Much in the same way I love Periwinkle I'm drawn to Elsa she's flawless.

I do hope people collect because they love the movie or princesses and not just so they can have the next big thing, or even worse only buy to make a profit.

They are pushing Olaf in the trailers. That does not mean that he is going to be the star of the show. He has his own musical number and he is the comedic relief, but the lead roles are held by Anna and Elsa. The trailers are showing us the silly, fun side of the movie. They are trying to hide the seriousness from the American audience, so that they are surprised. If you watch the Japanese trailer you will see an entirely different side of the characters.

In all honesty, I can't wait to see the movie with my grand daughter. Tangled was the very first Disney movie that she fell in love with and I've watched it with her so many times, that I know it from beginning to end and will always love it. I will still try to get the Tangled pins that we don't have. And I am only hoping they drop a bit, okay a lot, but that doesn't mean they will.
Now Frozen will be the first movie I'm actually taking her to see in the theater. I actually want to make a pin picture just for the winter months. And it is true that the personalities are going to be way different between Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa.
I'm glad you said that there is going to be a serious side Alex as I've only watched the US trailer which is more comical as you stated

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
You speak wisdom.

I did see the Japanese trailer which got me exceedingly hyped for Elsa  but it's not even just the US trailers, the Opening Day pin for Tangled has Rapunzel, for WiR it had Ralph, and from what I heard for Frozen...it has Olaf?!?!? Also, for the big display for movies in movie theaters, at least the one I saw for Frozen was this huge Olaf statue that had quite the comical hula skirt on. So they are just pushing Olaf all over the US, though I cannot wait for that serious part or to be more specific, I just want Elsa on screen!!! FOREVER!!!!

I do agree that I believe Frozen will be totally different from Tangled. The stories are very different Rapunzel vs. the Snow Queen. It will be a different style.

I was lucky to take my oldest daughter to Tangled the opening weekend for her first movie. Now, I will be able to take my youngest daughter to Frozen for her first movie. So both movies will hold a special place for me.

Also, my husband's family has family in Sweden, so I am also excited for them to see a movie with Swedish design and clothes. I have really liked what I have seen in the clips and pictures from the movie that I have seen. It looks to be a very pretty picture.

Because of these reasons and the movie looks to be a lot of fun and the pins are going to be nice. I love winter motifs. I am planning to collect the pins that I like.

On a side note about the Japanese aspect: I feel bad for everyone hell bent on being a frozen completist... You guys will most likely be in for a huge let down. I see this movie being a big hit in Japan and that means very exclusive Japan pins. (ex. Japan on classic pins, on classic frame set, the rapunzel smiles pins....) just saying a lot of people IN Japan have a hard time getting hold of these pins...

<~~ likes the concept of the movie for the whole sister thing.

<~~doesnt care if it does awesome or bombs, will collect the pins anyway.

<~~Sees similarities in EVERY Disney movie and could care less.

Because of all the pre-hype that seems to be happening with Frozen, I keep telling myself that I WON'T collect all of the pins...just the ones I really like... Although...I keep telling myself this about the other Frozen merch and it doesn't seem to be doing me any good.

Obviously it's going to be popular right away. Will the hype die down? Only time will tell...

I am excited for Frozen. As others have said, the art is amazing. Even if the movie is terrible I will still be happy I saw it for the visuals. Some of the pins I have seen so far I like, so I will collect them. Others do not interest me at all. I also really don't like Olaf. (Don't hate me!) I have only seen the American trailer but he REALLY annoyed me. Obviously I can't decide for sure until I watch the movie, but I think Frozen has a chance at being just as popular as Tangled, if not more.

I'm going to go watch it for the scenery and atmosphere which looks AMAZING. I'm not going to comment on the characters until I know more about their personalities. I'm not usually that bothered about the Princess movies... but the colour palette and backgrounds is what is really getting me interested in this movie.

I hope the songs are good too.

I'm sorry, but it's going to bother me if i don't point out what I have to point out

POTENTIAL SPOILERS!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!!
Highlight below to see the spoiler

Okay, so Elsa isn't technically a villain :naughty: which is nice, but Hans (hehehehe) may be I read the storybook that is available for purchase at Target!

*End of spoiler*

What do you think will happen with Frozen from a collectors stand point and a trading point of view?

It's going to be hot, hot, hot! I know that I am already loving the current pins, except for any of the animal sidekicks lol And for those who are not going to collect frozen, I would recommend getting some of the pins because they will become hot traders. Unfortunately, like many others may agree, the cost for acquiring these pins will be crazy. Probably just as much as Tangled because you have four main human characters, including two princesses. Something that hasn't happened since Mulan II, which had three princesses...although I haven't seen any pins of them. And adding to the former sentence, it will be difficult for those who live nowhere near any of the theme parks, Disney conventions, or partnership stores (not sure how else to call them) to be able to obtain multiples for keep and trade, so they might be very sought after.

Do you already find a connection with certain characters?

I feel Elsa's pain lol I know what it's like to push away a love one so you don't have to hurt them...won't say anymore cause spoilers

How would you compare the popularity of Tangled pin to the few Frozen pins announced?

Well, the current Frozen pins are nice, but I am still in love with some of the Tangled pins. Maybe once I see the Marquee, then I will become even crazier about Frozen. Plus there are, like, three Frozen pins compared to the number of pins Tangled already has. Still, there is great potential for great designs for Frozen! Very excited!

Will this be another Brave hype?

LOL I never knew that people were hyping Brave. The movie was enjoyable, but I guess it wasn't exactly memorable to me. I don't think it will be like Brave at all because Elsa and Anna are the type of princesses that many girls will drool over. Not saying that Merida isn't appealing, but I can bet that many girls still favorable a Princess like Ariel over Merida. Not trying to bash Merida because she is a great character, but I still see girls liking the other two princesses more.

Which pins are you most looking forward to or hoping Disney/GSF releases?

Definitely looking forward to the Marquee, BT, and PTDs

I don't think people are bashing the technicality part of the film, because you are absolutely correct; creating elements for a movie is a difficult process (although I believe that The Adventures of Tintin did a superior job than the recent Disney/Pixar CG movies. Watch it and let me know if you disagree.) The movie will be stunning, but some people (and I will admit, that that group includes me) see how similar Anna and Rapunzel look, and that is what is upsetting. Keyword is similar. Not the same. Personally (again, personally), just wish Disney could have done a Princess of Color, but apparently a made up fantasy story may not appeal to POC (right...cause we are not fans of fantasy, sci-fi, etc). It's just for some people outside of DPF and more on tumblr, we are just upset that they, once again, designed another white princess that looks close to a previous white princess. Again, this opinion is shared by some and not all. And if you don't agree, that is fine. The bashing comes in part of character design and not scenery. Plus, there are some folks that are upset that Disney has included these two guys when the Snow Queen is more of a feminist story, with lots of empowering female characters that they could have incorporated into the story. If I find the post, I'll link it because it's a really good read.

Anyway, there is going to be bashing and I just say scroll over it. It's going to happen. Disney is a big fandom and like other fandoms, there will be things that will get people upset. I know I will be voicing my opinion over on tumblr lol But whateves! Still going to watch this film because I am loving the scene where Anna tells Hans his gorgeous, ahaha! So me!

So to put it into my perspective, this is how I see how some of the characters are similar to Tangled characters:
Rapunzel -> Anna
Eugene/Flynn ->Kristoff
Maximus ->Sven
Olaf -> Pascal (although he is much cuter lol and much sassier)
The kingdoms look very similar, when they first met each other it seems like they may not get along immediately, and of course the journey they go through together to reach the climax of the story. There are differences, but there are also a lot of similarities. But we shall see

Will there be songs? A part of me wants to hear them sing, but another part of me doesn't....

  • No, I do not think Frozen will be the next Tangled. I think Frozen will be popular at first, but then kind of even out (like Brave). Everyone wants to collect it because it's new, and everyone wants that 'shiny, new toy/iWhatever/etc.' Tangled was not like that. Tangled wasn't popular, but then something exploded, and it became popular. Frozen is already pretty popular.

  • I do not think Elsa will be the villain. Period.

  • Yes, I already feel a connection with a character. I definitely feel a connection with Anna. From what I understand from the trailers/summaries, Anna is trying to save her sister (Elsa). I would most definitely do anything to save my sister. She is one of the most important people in my life.

  • For myself, I will love the movie no matter what, and I will collect the pins no matter what. I love the sister concept too much to not collect the pins and love the movie.

  • I'm looking forward to any and all pins that will be released from any location; however, I am not looking forward to the initial hype that I expect for the movie/pins.

Oh! I did not see this post, but that is very interesting. I guess it just depends on a person's POV. I still feel that there are similarities between Anna and Rapunzel, and I feel that it's okay. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying that are the same character, but they are similar and that's just my opinion. I don't think anyone is wrong in thinking that they are different or similar. But like a majority, I cannot wait to see it this Thanksgiving! Ahhh!!

But if you haven't seen the movie, how can you say that they are similar? That is the point I'm trying to make, and am reiterating.

Im just confused. I would still consider this a feminist movie. Sure, there may not be AS MANY female characters as desired, but there must be male characters included for leads as well. Disney should not feel obligated or pressured to alienate any one gender at any given time. I think we will find that it is very balanced. And to me, that is the essence of feminism; finding the equality an balance between gender. As for the POC princess, I think for sure we will see our next leading lady take on this role. Disney will be very selective about location and ethnicity of their next princess to prevent this backlash. However I don't know how long it will be until we see the next princess.
