I need some help, advice, or suggestions. Yesterday, I received some pins I bought on the Bay and the person who sold them to me obviously was, or lived with, a smoker. I have no judgement here, it's just that these pins truly reeked. I had to wash the pins twice in warm, soapy water to get most of the smell off. I still can't believe that they still smell, but it's much, much better.

I think the black Mickey head pin backs are just a write-off, I soaked them overnight in soapy water and the smell was still there. I have been soaking them all day today in alcohol and can still smell the smoke pretty well. WTF?

I don't know what to do about the backing cards. A couple of the cards were the plastic kind with felt and the other one was a DSF paper card. I wiped them down with a damp cloth but that didn't do anything at all. I guess I could try putting the plastic ones in water, but don't want the felt or the wording to rub off.

Anybody have any experience with this? Am I just SOOL?

I wish I had some advice for you!!! Glad I don't smoke in my house, never would think a little piece of metal would hold that smell so well!

Baking soda! Put it in a disposable plastic container (or box, I guess), cover the pins with baking soda and the smell should be gone within 1 week.

UGH! I never even thought about that happening I detest the smell of cigarette smoke (plus I'm a bad asthmatic so it makes me have an attack) That blows my mind, I will have to sniff all my new pins now

I have asthma as well, it really is a nuisance when items arrive with smoke residue and there was no mentioning of it prior! D: It can be really serious for some of us folks haha.
But +1 on baking soda, it works on dolls too! Good luck getting the smell out!!

Thanks for all the tips. Right now I have them in a box with dryer sheets, but the baking soda tip sounds good. I'll think I'll give that a go.

I use a bounce dryer sheet, wrap the pin in it and put it in a ziplock Baggie,it will take that smell out and I use sanitizer too

I'll trump that...cigar!!! I traded a high end pin for the same and when my pin arrived. Oh My Gosh!! It stunk so bad. I think it was produced in a cigar factory. I was so upset. I'm very sensitive to strong odors and to me, there is nothing worse than cigarette & cigar smoke. I think it's quite rude for traders who smoke, especially heavy smokers, not to warn others of their habit.

I have since added the clause to my trade acceptance..."no bad odors" Hopefully that gets smokers to realize that while we don't judge them, they must be considerate of others with allergies, sensitivity to smells, ect.

On a side note, I will never, ever trade with this person again. UGH!!

Omg! I have never had this problem before! I am glad there is a solution to it!

I also have bad asthma / allergies.

This will be useful in the future if I ever come across that issue.

Yep, the seller is now on the "never buy from again" list. There was practically a cloud of smoke that flew out when I opened the package. You know it's bad when your hands smell like cigarettes just from handling the pins.

I once bought a plush toy off eBay and it stank! I sprayed so much febreeze on it, I had to put it out to dry. That didn't even work. Althought it smells less now.

Hi,
its happened to me before as I opened the package oooooooo what a smell eckkkkk.
I stick them on a window ledge for a few hours seems to work.
I think the smokers don t realise as the sense of smell goes when your smoking lol
Glad I m not a smoker hehe

Give it a nice rub down with baby powder, dryer sheets, and baking soda. Then tumble it in the dryer

Wow - thanks for all the great tips! I hate the smell of smoke and I haven't had this happen but unfortunately it probably will in the future as there are so many people that smoke.

I don't think the smokers realize how nasty smoking around pins & packing can be- the pins & packaging can smell really bad! I have a similar problem w the student research papers I grade at UT Austin. One student smoking around his/her paper stinks up the whole batch

That really must be frustrating getting something that smells like smoke. I am a smoker but I do not smoke inside. When I do smoke outside I come back inside spray myself down and wash my hands before I touch anything. I would use baking soda like starry said it will clean the pin/s off nicely and take the smell off of them. Hope you get the smell off I wouldn't want it on any of my pins either.

I got a pin from Ebay once that reeked of cigarette smoke, it took a few goes with baking soda and water, but eventually I got rid of the smell.

I just couldnt believe how long the smell stuck around even after multiple washes though! Good luck!
