DisneyStore Limited Edition 17" Dolls Discussion
Moana's clothes would look too plain for a doll. Who really knows, she could be a princess, or she could end up like big hero 6 with limited merchandise.

Wait, they're not? I am so out of the loop.

They're not. The Frozen franchise brings in more $$ alone than it would if the girls were in the Princess line. The coronation ceremony was planned for summer 2014 and was cancelled after the massive frozen success. The girls will still be crowned in the official Disney Princess lineup just not anytime soon.

That makes total sense, I thought they had done the coronation ceremony. Thanks for letting me know.

Before Snow White was released in 1937 the public reacted with cynicism, calling it "Disney's Folly" while the studio was fixing to run into the ground with millions in debt from the expense of the production. And yet...today it is the most culturally relevant film in the Disney franchise and a beloved classic (not to mention Snow White is a top Disney Princess and The Evil Queen still one of the best loved villains).

I'm not saying Moana will be a great film or not, but I certainly don't think it's a good idea to pass judgment at this stage. Disney has never given its fans much to go on before a new movie is released, and every time a film debuts the reaction is different. Moana could be as beloved as Frozen or as disliked as Home on the Range...who knows? :)

Even though this movie might be good, I kind of doubt it will outshine frozen. Okay scratch that, the minions movie almost did and it sucked. I guess anything can happen. I'm sure Moana might be good.

How Disney chooses when to Induct a princess into the line is actually pretty simple.

Observe interest and sale info. If you notice a drop and people are starting to lose interest, hold the massive ceremony to give that character a jolt of popularity.

Rapunzel lasted for a bit and then when Disney noticed that people were starting to lose interest, they held the ceremony.

Merida quickly lost interest and because of that Disney decided that it would be time to hold the event.

For the frozen sisters, they're still quite popular so Disney is holding out until they start to become unpopular. I wouldn't be surprised if Moana got inducted before them. As for the ceremony... I really only want Anna to be inducted and for Elsa to crown her. Elsa is a queen. And then Anna could maybe insist that Elsa should be a princess too and that's how Elsa sorta joins the line, to go with Anna's wishes. This should play really well marketing wise.

As for the comments about Moana and the doll. Keep in mind that were probably gonna have a suped up celebration outfit in the movie. Every princess has had one, with the exception of Pocahontas. And they could always embellish what she's wearing. Look at jasmine. All she wore was a crop top and baggy pants. They embellished that. Same with Merida. She had a very simple dress. They gave her accessories and other things.

Moana will without a doubt be popular. She's going to have powers. That's enough to stir her into the same league as Elsa. Let's hope they utilise them properly!

On a related note, I was sad when I realized that Vanellope is not considered a "Disney Princess." She's Disney, she was a princess during the movie, she qualifies more than some. Plus, I love her, she's awesome.

Isn't it a little too early to be making assumptions like that? I mean, all we have to go on so far is some concept art, some music, and some very small story bits (it taking place in Polynesian culture, featuring gods and demi gods, exploration, and so on). Don't get me wrong, I understand not being excited for it, but it just seems a bit early to be deciding things like if it will be a classic. Then again, its a little too early to be making assumptions about how the doll will look, so I guess I can't say much lol.

Yeah, it's just all assumptions at this point. Of course it's too early to form a hardcore opinion on what the movie is going to be like since it's far from being completed, and certainly wasn't trying to do that. LOL I was just sharing my initial opinions of what they've offered so far, which isn't much granted. I'm just not excited with what I'm seeing and hearing, and these are the little tidbits that are meant to get people excited and wanting more. I'm sure they'll adjust things if they don't get good feedback, and I'm sure we'll see better things in the future. I'm also concerned with them rushing it just to piggyback off of the success of Frozen considering how much they upped the release. I'm really hopeful what we'll see in the future is better. It just seems to me at this point this has less opportunity for the elements of a movie like Frozen, which would be extremely hard to live up to anyway. I think it's hard not to compare her initial drawing to Lilo for the stocky look and Pocahontas with the rather drab attire, and that's a big selling point.

I've certainly been wrong about most of the recent Disney movies. I'm no expert. I just enjoy the movies and dolls and hope the quality improves from the films they made recently prior to Frozen. I'm just being reminded of them in this situation and concerned in the talent and effort being put into it. I think it's been a roller coaster ride since The Lion King (I was a teen when it came out). I was really excited about the movies that followed and the only one I found that wasn't a let down since then was Frozen. Most movies were enjoyable, but not ones I'd really feel I had to watch again, or at least not for several years. The older films felt like masterpieces and the more recent ones felt more generic in a way and quickly (relative to the situation) produced to get a fast profit. They were entertaining enough and better quality than much of what was out there, but to me they just didn't compare to prior films I grew up with. I think it's unreasonable to think Disney can recreate something like Frozen, but I got spoiled in my youth when they came out The Little Mermaid, then Beauty and the Beast, then Aladdin and then The Lion King. I hope Moana is par with them, rather than Brave, The Frog Princess, and etc. I'm just not getting my hopes up at this point.

You make very good points. While I am really excited for the movie, I don't expect it to be nearly as popular or beloved as Frozen, nor do I expect it to be as big of a success. I am also a little worried that it will be effected by the sudden decision to release it next year instead of 2018 like they originally planned. These films always take so long to make, so seeing them deciding to release it this early is a little bit troubling. However, I am still really excited for it. What little information they showed off at D23 made it one of my most anticipated films of next year. I can only hope that it will be good. Either way, its always fun and interesting to see Disney make a film outside of their comfort zone (european princesses). And I am really looking forward to seeing what her doll will look like (if they make one, which I am sure they will)!

Ya know, no big Diamond Edition release is scheduled for next year aside from Pinocchio. Unless they decide to do a Blue Fairy doll or something, could Moana be the only 17" doll we get next year? I don't see how they could release any others unless they find a way to do yet more Frozen dolls like Hans or they do one for Alice Through the Looking Glass or another live action film.

Yeah, I completely agree with you on Disney getting out of their comfort zone with the princesses. I really am hoping Moana does well for that reason if nothing else. I just have a hard time getting excited under the circumstances. Honestly, I was more excited before they released the most recent images. The movie could be really beautiful with the Polynesian backgrounds. I admit I'm cynical and I do apologize for that. I try not to be too negative. I've just been so excited and so let down that I try not to get too excited. I went to Frozen without any expectation and I'm sure had it been otherwise the experience would have been different. I remember seeing the Brave promos in the theater and I just couldn't wait for it. I thought that was the one I'd been waiting for since The Lion King, and was completely shocked at how different it ended up being from what the promos led me to think. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it more if I'd not seen any promos and got my hopes up for it by comparing it to the those movies I grew up with. I think that was the last one I got really worked up for.

As far as the doll, I'd be likely to buy it if I loved the character even if I wasn't fond of the attire, and I'd buy it if I loved the attire, but not the character, so it'll be a waiting game to see how things to turn out, of course. As it stands those stocky legs are bit off putting. I hate saying that as I'm short and void of shapely legs, but no way I'd buy a doll that looks like me either. :)

I'm really interested to see what next year brings for the 17" dolls. I'm really hoping for a Blue Fairy. I think an Alice doll from the new movie would be great as well. Maybe they'll take the opportunity to release Mulan or Pocahontas. I know they don't do as well, but without the competition they might do better. I find it odd Disney would ignore them. It's in their best PR interest to produce them and the dolls could turn out well with a bit of imagination and effort. Part of me is hoping they give a us a bit of a break. I get excited for the dolls, but there's been a bit much of them this year. I haven't hardly bought anything else I collect. And we'll still have the smaller collectible dolls coming out next year, hopefully.

Moana's got one extra year than Frozen for development. Frozen had two and Moana is going to be in it's third year of production next year. I have to say to those nay-sayers about the quality of the film: the art that I've seen looks amazing.

This is our villain. She looks so awesome and terrifying.

I'm not saying it's going to be as beloved as Frozen. I love Frozen to death, but I will admit I hold BH6 as an overall better film. The only thing Frozen has over BH6 in my opinion is characters/character development and music. But I collect characters, not films, and therefore my collection is geared toward Anna and a little Elsa and Kristoff. So, for me collecting Moana will really come down to the characters of the film.

I saw big hero six, and I preferred frozen over it. I guess it's because I heard all these great reviews about it so I had high expectations. It was cute, but I like frozen better.

I loved Frozen about 1,000,000 times better than BH6 or most other movies, but the Disney Store was really quick on pulling the BH6 merch out of the stores. I wanted a Go Go Tomago doll. I saw her once in the store, decided to think on it, and NEVER saw her again. I really think they could have kept the stuff in stock a little longer.

I like big hero 6, but I preferred the songs and story from frozen. And I also prefer the live action Cinderella over both of these movies. I guess I like movies with that special Disney Magic.

I completely understand. It always feel awful to get really excited for a movie, and then have it turn out disappointing. My most recent example of that would probably be Big Hero 6. I got really excited for that movie, and it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be in the end. I did like the world and characters, but it felt like there was a lot of missed opportunities with the overall film and it even felt generic to me in a lot of ways (would have liked to have seen more merch for it though). I am really excited for Moana, but I guess I am trying not to get TOO excited. I should probably wait until I at least see the first trailer before that happens lol.

That was one of the pieces of concept art that got me hyped. Seriously, I need a trailer for this thing! The music they previewed was wonderful as well. As for the development time, I didn't realize that it had an extra year of development time. That kind of makes me feel better about it being released so soon. Not to mention that Frozen went through around 2 or 3 script re-writes during that time, and it turned out alright in the end. Gotta be optimistic without getting too excited I suppose!

OMG I had the same expectation for BH6 like you mentioned & was a little disappointed how the story played out. Don't get me wrong, I love BH6 with their characters & visuals but the whole story missed so many opportunities & thought they would have some elements based off from the actual comics of BH6 into the big screen. But to you the truth about my overall favorite movies during this Disney Revival Era for this generation, it would have to go to Princess & The Frog & Wreck-It Ralph. Those movies hit it so hard for me down to feels that it felt like going back in time & seeing Aladdin & Little Mermaid for the first time & how amazing & breathtaking to watch. It sucks we won't see Vanellope Von Schweetz as a Disney Princess & seeing her in the line but I totally love her more in the direction of President Von Scheetz (which sounds better imo lol).

Now for Moana & everybody bashing against for not getting the doll of her, be patient & wait until you actually see the products in store & see the dang movie of course! The more people who are going to dislike it more, that means more product for myself & others who truly going to appreciate. For a person like myself who actually SAW A PREVIEW of the movie during the D23 Expo, you guys are seriously not going to be disappointed. I seriously wish I took some photos of the trailer they showed us but I would've gotten kicked out lol. But they did show Moana as a little girl & she was in cute Polynesian outfit that she was in & the way she played with water in the ocean, was simply adorable! So you know Disney will be making dolls of older Moana & toddler dolls of young Moana. No matter what she looks like, you know this Disney fan will buy this doll. Cause I haven't been this excited for a brand new Disney movie that I can not contain my soul for since Wreck-It Ralph & I thank my lucky stars that it brought my expectations. Also, the reason why I'm supporting this amazing Moana movie is because during the Aladdin panel at D23 Expo, the artist who did Genie (Eric Goldberg) is working on this movie & he is being the animator for Ocean cause he mentioned that it'll act as a "character" on its own. Almost like carpet in a way but the ocean will be more complex. So the fact they showed us a surprise sneak peak of Moana during the Aladdin panel, I was automatically hooked & on board the Moana train! LOL. Bring on the 17" dolls of her already! Though for some reason in my head, if it really does succeed (total exaggeration btw lol), I hope Disney doesn't hype it too much & milk all the way & start replacing the shows like the Enchanted Tiki Room or take over the Aulani Resort. I mean I highly doubt it at all but the even the thought kinda worries me a little. Okay I'll be quiet now & admire my Red slave Jasmine doll ahaha. 8 more days till my ultimate favorite movie comes out, as well with the dolls! :D

UNPOPULAR (on a Disney site but actually highly shared over the rest of the Internets) OPINION TIME:

Frozen is one of the most OVERRATED FILMS, not just Disney films, but ALL FILMS IN GENERAL of ALL TIME. Right up there with Avatar. It's an okay movie, decent but not great. It has a terrible shoehorned in villain for a film that did NOT need a villain at all (Elsa's internal struggle was enough of a protagonist vs. antagonist thing as it was). The dialogue is cheesy as hell and the resolution is AWFUL. "Love, of course" and then everything is magically fixed?? I actually let out an audible groan in the theater when that happened. Ugh.

But the worst part is how much the public loves that movie. I really don't get it because as far as fairy tale films go, PatF and Tangled are FAR superior and for more contemporary flavour, WIR and Big Hero 6 are much more fun and ALL those films have more heart. I bawled like a baby at the end of Big Hero 6 even though I knew there would be some way to bring back Baymax (it's Disney and he's one of the "6" so if they ever do a sequel he's gotta still be around!) but the only moment in Frozen that even gave me the feels was the final verse of Do You Want To Build a Snowman because Kristen Bell just killed it.

Frozen has pretty good music, but that's about it. And only "pretty good" music because I feel that Alan Menken is still the king of Disney soundtracks. Let It Go is an extremely powerful and moving song but I seriously feel that that's the only four minutes of Frozen that matter. I'm thrilled with the fame it brought Idina Menzel though. She deserves all the recognition the film brought her (after they didn't even give her a song to sing in Enchanted -WHAT??)

Yep, much like Elmo is Sesame Street's "little red menace", Frozen has become Disney's "little white menace" (represented by the annoying as hell Olaf). Despite all I said I don't hate the movie (it's lower-middle tier in the Disney canon for me) but I do hate what it's done to the company. Pocahontas turned 20 years old this year. That would have been the perfect time to give her and John Smith 17" dolls in the spring. BUT NOPE MOAR FROZEN, ALL FROZEN, ONLY FROZEN AH HA HA HA HA. And they weren't even nice dolls either, with the exception of Kristoff. Sigh.

BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT.

I am super stoked for Moana BUT we still know hardly anything about it and it doesn't release for more than a year (with The Good Dinosaur, Zootopia and Finding Dory all coming before it in the mean time) so I'm not going to think that far ahead about doll possibilities yet. I WILL say I'm super disappointed to see some people blowing off her dolls because her outfit might not be super detailed (I'm sure it will be - maybe not a fancy ballgown but it'll be something lovely) or, even worse, because she has....actually realistic human body proportions. Yeeesh.

I am looking to Moana I loved the concept art shown at D23 and if there is a doll of her I will try and get her. As for Frozen I do like it but Disney has shoved it down our throats way to much. The only thing I collect from Frozen is some select Elsa stuff. Again I like the movie but it's not as great as the hype would have you believe. I loved tangled and Wreck it Raplh more.

You saw the PBS special on Walt Disney, too, I take it, lol?

Haha I just watched that too.

personally I feel like Moana will do about as well as BH6 in terms of popularity and box office earnings. I hope it will do better and be better, though I do love BH6. I'd love a doll of Moana... Her hair is glorious.

I'm actually excited for the new frozen fever dolls, I know some feel...differently, but I can finally own a decent queen Elsa that isn't covered in sweaty shine! And the plus is that if you want, you could customize Elsa to be the snow queen Elsa!

Surprised no one has mentioned this here, but Radio Disney Club revealed some new info on the wedding platinum set. It will be LE 250, and the box will be similar to the wedding Cinderella doll box where it has two flaps that open up to reveal the doll inside. It will also have green, blue and gold coloring on the box similar to the Art of Jasmine merch. Its apparently scheduled to release the same day as the Diamond Edition, but other sources say the release date is November 11th, which is the 23rd anniversary of Aladdin. Remember that all of this is still a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. Even though I don't plan on buying it (even if I wanted to, I can't afford it and its probably gonna sell out really fast anyways), I am really interested to see what it looks like. I bet its going to be gorgeous!

We also got some really nice pictures of Aladdin! I think he is going to look fantastic in person.

Ugh that is wonderful and terrible at the same time! I absolutely adore Aladdin, but the one picture I had seen wasn't great... but some of these are so amazing I really want him.

i was really looking forward to the Aladdin LE doll since he's my favorite "prince"... but the doll we're getting really just isn't doing anything for me.
he's just too plain compared to all the other 17" LEs

i was pretty convinced we'd be getting him in his prince ali outfit and am a bit disappointed we didn't :(

EDIT: urk, i know quite a few people were looking forward to him in his street urchin clothes so i'm glad for them, i just personally prefer the over the top outfits and such.
