We use cork boards and have never had an issue. The canvas idea sounds cool, too.
I make my boards out of coroplast (corrugated plastic) covered in fabric (glued on with hot glue). The coroplast really grips the pins; there's no worry about them falling out, and it's pretty easy to push them in without breaking if you just push slowly. It's a little harder to get them out, but with gentleness and either fingernails or a bone folder (a tool I use in making collages; it's a smooth flat thing) they come out with no damage if I want to rearrange.
(I made my first board with foam core, which is paper over foam, basically, and I did break a pin post on it, although I suspect that pin might have been a scrapper. Anyway I don't recommend the foam core after trying it.)
I get my coroplast from Amazon.com, but you can also get it at anywhere that sells plastic yard sale type signs-- Home Depot, Lowe's, that kind of thing. It cuts pretty easy so you can make it into whatever shapes you want.
Oh great thanks! I love all these cool ideas!
You're welcome! You can see what I've done so far here: http://disneypinforum.com/showthread.php?15450-My-collection-it-grows-(Updated!-Photo-heavy!)
