Pin-lifetime tracking, sounds fun but would never happen

Remember when you were in elementary school or Jr/Sr high and you'd get a book the first day. You'd instantly open it and see who had the book before you. Maybe your older sibling, your cousin, a family friend, your crush that was 2 years older? Maybe I'm just nostalgic but I liked seeing who used the book before me. Similar to when watchmakers / repairmen put their makers marks inside watch cases. Keep a history, show off your work.

Well, imagine now if we could somehow track who has owned a pin throughout it's lifetime? I know, some pins are small and probably wouldn't work, but imagine if we took a decent size and stamped an initial on the back, or put our pinpics name in fine-tip Sharpie? Just to see who has owned it. I think it would be kind of cool. Might help with stolen or fake pins too. Or if we could get Disney to stamp the pin number on all LE pins, like DLP does, and then we could register the pin number on PinPics when we list it as "owns." Just a far out idea. I'm bored.

I wouldn't like sharpie on the back, but if every single pin had a unique serial number, you could have something online like wheresgeorge.com.

I remember doing that Mark. Thanks for the good ole memories! Very cute idea, I think the stamp number would be a better idea as you'd run out of room fast using a sharpie if it was traded again and again. LOL

Ok ok ok, no Sharpie. But yeah, I thought of wheresgeorge from the dollar bill serial number thing. I could just see in 25 years when owning a PODM that Goofy_Moe owned would add like 10% value premium. haha.

This is a sweet idea. But in all honestly, I wipe my pins with antibacterial wipes when I get home to erase the "history" of each pin. :lol:

if all LE pins were numbered like the DLRP ones it would work. A database listing owners for each number. Like for instance: Pin 12345, #10/750. Original purchaser johnny depp, and then a list of each owner who registers since that point.

That's what I do whenever I receive a dollar that has the "Where's George" stamp on it. I like seeing how far the dollar has traveled haha

Believe it or not, the idea dates back to ancient China. The owners of art scrolls would place their "chop" or family seal in a space left at the bottom of the scroll for just that reason. As the scroll was sold you could see its illustrious prior owners. For some pieces the history as revealed in the "chops" became more valuable than the actual painting.

But this is all but impossible for pin. The backing card number is NOT unique to each pin. You would have to do something like laser etch an identifying number into the side or back of the pin. Then either embed a computer id chip - such as used to track pets and create a tamper resistant writing routine to record ownership as well as a central data base.

It could be done..... but I doubt Disney would do it. They have no reason to as they have repeatedly said they don't care about the secondary market. Fans could do it but would take a fair amount of money to set up and run the program.
