So, I've been on DPF a couple months now. I've had a pinpics for about the same amount of time.

At first If I just added every pin I "liked" (even just a bit) I would add it to my "Wants" on pinpics.

I have since deleted a ton of pins from my wants, and focused more on the pins I REALLY, REALLY want.

I mostly have pins listed I need for my collections, sets, or different series.

I have seen people with only 5 pins on their wants... That is very hard to make a trade with them.
I have seen people with 300000 pins on their wants... it's a higher chance they will not like the pin you choose to trade with them.
I have seen people with NO wants at all... (I'm looking at you- TheOtherSteve)

What are your opinions on this? How do you find a good balance of pins for your wants?

I started to do what you did...adding everything I liked...even a little bit, but I have done a lot of trades and I find it REALLY difficult to keep up. I kinda "wing" it when it comes to auctions and such with people here. I started to stress about it, thinking I needed to keep my pin pics updated ALL THE TIME. But with 2 kids and everything else going on...it's just not feasible for me to keep it 100% updated all the time.

depends on the pin. I choose whatever I like from movies that are major parts of my collection, but I still have to really like the pin, I don't just want them all.
Otherwise I have to really like the pin. Really really like the pin.
So with with Robin Hood I'm pretty open about pins, with Snow White I'm picky about pins.
I will regularly go through my wants and remove pins I don't really want, or add more.

I feel when you live far away from the parks, it's better to want more as most of your trades will be distance and you want as many options as possible. When you live closer, it might be harder to keep your wants up to date and you'll be doing a lot of your trades in person so your wants list wont matter as much.

I like what sorapandora does and she limits the amount of pins she has so she can appreciate them more (or thats what I've learned too). Stuff that I collect like Peter Pan, I am more picky since there are soooo many but I do admire averysfairytale who is a completist haha! I also mostly look for the pins I REALLY REALLY MUST HAVE NOW stuff that I often check on ebay, DPF, etc. But I have skimmed my wants list now to I would loveeee them in my collection and have reasons to want them (childhood memory, favorite scene in movie, favorite character, etc.) Ultimately, its up to you but I have started to cut down and edit out my wants list and even my "keepers"!

I started by adding every pin I would want ever even for future collections in my mind, and then as I sarted trading I realized I wasnt getting as excited to get certain pins as I was for others, so then I narrowed down my wants list to what I'm really collecting plus a few extra pins that I love :)

I love to trade!!! So I have both pins I want to trade for as traders and pins I want for my collection. But at least I can feed my addiction to trade when I can't be at the park. Much easier to trade if you have a lot of pins, of course it makes you more broke also. But hey it is an addiction and I have to feed it. :)

I generally only have pins in my want list that I want. Many of the pins end up becoming traders because I am not a big fan of them once I get them. I do go through my wants list when I am bored and remove pins I don't like or don't want anymore.

I only have about 75 "wants" in my wants list on PinPics. I used to have a lot more, but I narrowed it down quite a bit after promising my BFF I would stop after getting 100 keepers. (LOL! I have 96 keepers now, no sign of slowing down...)

The pins I add to my wants list are all pins I really like and would like in my collection. They all go along with the themes I'm collecting (classic animals, Peter Pan, Chip and Dale, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, holidays, etc.).

Because I'm a little OCD and I like to keep tabs on everything, I also keep a separate list on PinPics of pins I just love the look of, but don't necessarily want to own. (Either they won't fit into any of my themes, or they are just nearly impossible to get ahold of - i.e. Designer Princesses.) I call that list "So Many Pretty Pins" and you can see it here, if you're curious. :)

Thanks for starting this thread, Jenna. Been wondering about this as well.

I'm new to pin trading and I find myself adding a lot of pins to my Wants... I can foresee this becoming a problem since other traders won't be able to tell which pins I'm really really crazy about and which pins I would just like to own because I think they look nice. So even though I'm not setting the right example (hehe), I think it's better to only have "high priority" pins in your Wants. I'll get there... eventually. :)

For me I am just focusing on getting Cars pins. Those are pretty much the only wants on my list besides a few other random pins i would like. focus focus focus!!!

I have 111 wants on PinPics, they are all mainly Snow White related with a couple of Beauty and The Beast. These are ones I would like the most and I don't think I'll be adding anymore because I hardly have any traders to trade for them the only option for me is to buy them.

I noticed this myself as well. I recently got a pin pics account and went through all 864 pages of pins and marked my "wants." When I was done I realized my "wants" list had over 2400 pins!! :| Ya.... prolly wasn't the best idea to go page by page

I noticed that pin pics is not entirely accurate bc I couldn't find some pins on there that I know for a fact do exist and many pins are listed 2 to 3 different times. I'm curious to see how my trading will turn out here bc of how big my "wants" list is. My "wants" list definitely has holy grails in it but I must admit I marked alot of pins that I thought were pretty/cool, not necessarily ones that will be true keepers if they came into my posession. I am also trying to get good traders, so I figure the ones that aren't true keepers will become my traders if I get any.

I'm kind of worried for creating a sig for my holy grails list.... not only bc I don't know how to do it but seeing how many holy grails I reallllllllly want .... hopefully it won't be some outrageous number like 100 or something like that ^^' LOL!

Hercules is the only disney film I love so much that I am excited to recieve the pins and willing to buy / trade for them, so now I only have the hercules pins I want on the list and my sister adds her grails to it.

Thank you so much for this post.. It has been extremely helpful. I just started back in May. I'm still trying to go through pages and find ones I really want and then go through again and edit as well.

I am glad I am not the only one who went crazy... "want everything, must add to list"!! Haha!

I do not really understand the "Trading for more traders" I guess I would rather just trade for pins that I want, or know that I could give to someone else.

Thank you for the replies everyone, I hope to see more!!!

I know my collection has evolved (and grown) over time. I started with pins that were 'memories' things Ive done/experienced in the parks that I wanted a 'tangible memory' of very few of those pins ever made it to a 'wants' list as they were purchased and for the most part that collection has lower value pins (yet some have done well)

From there specific 'memories' became larger collections (I used to drive Monorails so I collect Monorails etc.) and as over time the collections became more complete (very few collections are 100% complete for many reasons) I missed the 'hunt' so I've added other collections- Like what started out as Wilderness Lodge/Fort Wilderness (first resorts I worked in) added Big Thunder (My 'birth' attraction since it was opened the year I was born)and has slowly became 'Frontierland/Wilderness'

Most of my collections started with the low value easy to find pins then slowly added some basic LEs then some harder to find ones as I built trading power-Ive avoided the 'expensive' collections simply as I refuse to drop $$$ on single pins (most Ive ever spent on a pin is 45-50- did buy the tarzan frame set for 100ish) because pin value is so fleeting and very few pins ever appreciate in value (of the 7,000+ I own prob only 100 or so would I make a profit on selling and most of those have depreciated from their peak- Monorail Surprise pins, I was there etc, quite a few I'd break even on)

I rarely buy with the intent to put it just in the trade books- though esp at trading nights I will trade if others want something and have nothing of my wants something to re-trade esp as I tend to have older more off the beaten path pins...

Like many others here, I started out with a pretty big wants list. I eventually whittled it down to pins that were less easy to get through other sources, as well as being specific to a few collection themes.

I didn't realize what could be done with pin groups until recently; if there was a way to use them without making my email address public, they would be very handy for creating additional categories.

I solved the problem by just creating a secondary Pinpics account. My primary account, listed here, has all my traders and my most wanted pins. Which right now, is still about 1200 pins. My secondary account just lists ALL of my wants, no trades, and is primarily for my own record-keeping. Although, it is helpful when I have a pin someone wants but I don't have a match on my primary account, I can compare the secondary account and see if anything pops up. It's currently at about 6450.

When I first got back into online trading after DPF started, I took a hatchet to my wants and dropped it to about 325, and then it grew back up to about 450 and then spent the next year whittling it down to back under 400. It was good because it allowed me to complete many sets I had been working on for years. Especially ones that had fallen out of favor and were much easier to acquire than in years past. But I always worried about what trades I was missing out on because my list was smaller. And when people sold their trades list it made it harder to quickly see if there was something I wanted. So I started adding back in certain collections that I wanted to focus on: Animal Kingdom, Figment, certain DL sets, 4th of July. And that's how my list has grown back up to 1200.

I also use Pin Groups quite extensively.

Brilliant! Thanks for the tip. :)

The new Pinpics, won't let people have 2 accounts with the same email address (I'm not sure if it will reject the account creation now, but they mentioned it awhile back that the new site won't allow it). But you can get a freebie account on yahoo, hotmail, gmail or whatever, and then tie that to the 2nd account. Since it isnt' being set up for trading, you don't have to worry about having someplace to check for trades or anything.

I clean mine out and update it weekly I think..I have about 900 pins in my wants BUT many of them are 0 trading, so I don't feel bad leaving them there...but I also have pins in my wants for my grandma, little sister and my pin trading friend!
