I started pin collecting in 1999, continued to 2001, and then recently picked it back up again a couple months ago. I find it interesting now that there are so many pins, what people decide to collect and which of those themes seem to be the most popular amongst collectors. Just observing on the boards I feel like the most popular themes in order are:
1. Alice in Wonderland
2. Tangled
3. UP
4. Stitch
5. Sleeping Beauty
6. Jessica
7. Ariel

I remember back in the earlier days, it seemed like everyone collected Tinkerbell, Donald Duck, Maleficent and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but they don't seem to be as popular now.

I also find it interesting that The Lion King and Toy Story, arguably Disney's most successful movie franchises, are among some of the least popular it seems. Aladdin also doesn't seem as popular as either.

These are just my observations and I was wondering your thoughts on the topic. Agree? Disagree?

I agree with your ordering for the most-part. I wonder how long the Tangled/Up fad will last, or if they are going to remain hot indefinitely.

Tink retains her popularity

As for Lion King, being a "boys" film it seems to be more limited for characters. There have been plenty of Timon Pumba, Simba, and the occasional Scar.

B&TB used to have lots of pins. I was expecting to be seeing more of them this year with the release of the 3D B&TB. I know the Soda Fountain had some and I would expect to see more of them as well as Cars as we head into Summer.

But for now the new "darling" is Rapunzel of Tangled. Guess everyone loves the hair.

Haunted Mansion is still a bit popular but no where near what it used to be.

Pooh has also gone down in popularity.

Funny you should mention Toy Story as not one of the more popular categories; I loved Toy Story from the beginning and decided to collect from that movie (and Monsters, Inc.), so I have tons of pins in my collection. All of a sudden, when TS3 was released, TS pins became a LOT more popular. Where once I usually didn't have problems trading for TS pins, I do now sometimes.

Stitch is still really popular after all these years, but nothing beats the insanity of those early days. I don't collect him specifically (I have some pins I like with him), but I think back to "Stitch Sundays" at DLR and remember the Stitch collectors going crazy, lol!

Tinker Bell seems to be consistently popular too, and HM, and NBC, and Jessica Rabbit. For a while (before the movies and during), POTC pins were really popular too, and I remember some were very hard to get (the attraction), and also Malificent. Pins with Walt used to be gold; I don't even know anyone who avidly collects Walt pins these days. Blue Fairy was pretty popular too, and so was Jiminy Cricket. Does anyone care about those two today? LOL! And CM pins (the ones only they could buy) were really popular, not as much now, but then, the designs seemed to be a lot nicer then, now some are, most aren't. No one I know of is (or rarely is) driving a hard bargain for a CM pin, based on that fact alone.

Of characters that have been around for a while (not "newbie" characters and movies such as Tiana, UP, etc.), Alice seems to be far more popular now than when I started. It's been interesting to see the collecting trends all these years!

If you will check, you will find that Donald Duck is still number 1. Just ask him for his autograph and he will confirm it.

1. Haunted Mansion
2. Tangled
3. Up
4. Jessica Rabbit
5. Stitch
6. Tinker Bell
7. Alice
8. Star Tours/Wars

I collect #5 & #7 a lot. The rest are based on the prices and number of people collecting IMO.

I've always collected Toy Story. It's always been my main collection. Once Toy Story 3 was released there were newer pins that were released and its popularity rose for a bit. It became harder to trade but now that some time has passed I do find that the people interested in the pins has died down a bit.
Makes it easier for me :)

I do wonder how Up & Tangled are going to do overtime. People who I've come across collecting them seem to have an emotional attachment to these characters which may keep them in demand years and years from now. I do seem to notice that some Up pins just look the same. Ive seen so many Carl pins that honestly have almost no difference in design of the pin which for me would make me lose interest. Although they do have the popularity to stay. But who knows... Maybe there will be an amazing new movie coming our way that will take over. We will have to wait and see.

Actually..if you notice...it is combo designs that are the most popular. Such as a characters dressed liked another character, or invading a cartoon -like Jessica, Stitch, but yes even Donald dressed as others (from D23 Expo) is popular. Granted each of those designs make two groups want it.

Stitch dressed up in certain pins can be very popular. It depends on which pin and who is the character. Combination character pins are very good. Rapunzel might be at the top right now.

I think it's safe to say that Brave did not live up to its hype. I don't think that it will have the staying power of Tangled or UP.

PODMs and Beloved Tales seem to be on everybody's minds right now (and understandably so). I still am upset there won't be a Sleeping Beauty PODM.

I'm so relieved I don't collect any of most popular pin themes mentioned above.

I certainly don't envy the Tangled, Stitch, and Jessica Rabbit collectors their struggle to get their hands on the most sought-after of pins.

Yikes!

This is how I see it (1= most 10= least)

1. Up
2.PODMS
3.Tangled (seems 2 have died down a but but not much :P )
4.beloved tales
5.Stitch
6.Tink
7.Dumbo
8.Jasmine
9.Lady and the tramp
10.Villians

I am not sure how a movie's or character's popularity corresponds to the pins though. Enchanted/Giselle are not around anymore, although I liked the movie very much. But, the Enchanted Marquee skyrocketed in demand. Lately I am not sure if it is a certain series that is sought after or the characters. Disney Dreams collection definitely got popular too.

I somewhat agree. However I'm disagreeing with Maleficent.
Her pins are really hard to get if they're not Hidden Mickey's.

I've had a heck of a time prying her gorgeous pins from everyone especially the DA pins.

I haven't been a pin trader for very long but I feel the same way. Just on the forums though, cuz when I go through dlr all the serious pin traders have some specific favs. For instance, Jessica, scar, chip and Dale.
