People opening mystery boxes in the store!?

So I totally was amazed when I saw this. I was at DOwntown Disney at WOD ( World of Disney ) (( seriously a hugeeeee store )) I saw people pick up boxes of pins. I thought "Okay..that's a whole rack of pins. They can not seriously be buying thoes right?" so I followed them out of site. (inconspicuously as I could be) and saw them litterly opening the black baggies and what not to look at the pins. I was shocked.

Can anyone else here admit they have done it sometime?
Or are people like me just tottaly dumbfounded by this?

How do y'all feel about this? Just curious.
 
That is insane!!! I feel that that borders on theft. I would have alerted a cast member immediately. In fact I have made cast members aware of a similar situation. I saw a man and woman opening Star Wars Vinyls and putting them back on the shelf. They were stopped by security and escorted out of the store. That us just not right

I agree that this behavior is wrong. I also dislike those individuals who grab the bagged mystery pins and try to feel the shape of the pin before deciding to buy them. I was shocked when a CM asked what pin that I was looking for and he proceeded to feel about two dozen pins before selling me one bag. Of course, I was grateful that the bag contained the pin that I wanted.
 
It doesn't just sound like theft, it IS theft. That is so wrong on so many levels that I have trouble even comprehending how some people can be such idiots. I would have immediately summoned a CM and said in a loud voice "They are opening the boxes" and that would fix it. That is just so wrong. It's people like that who give pin trading a bad name.
 
I've heard of people opening the Gear Up plate boxes to feel if they got a chaser or not. I know people opened the train boxes because you could basically feel what pin it was by looking at the pictures. I think it usually happens after purchase but pre-purchase in the store is pretty ballsy. I think that is why they sometimes put little cardboard folds in with the pins so you can't really feel what you got.
 
I couldn't imagine opening them in the store!!! :O I personally LOVE the suspense of NOT knowing what I purchased... Admittedly, I am often disappointed, but then that brings me full circle to the world of trading :D
 
OMG seriously??? I have never seen this but wow they are bold. I would never even think to go do that. Mush like Nikki opening the bags is my fav part - which is why i sometimes buy too many boxes because I just want to open more. Lol . . . . so what did u do? did u tell a cm??
 
I've always thought they should put tape over the mystery boxes, or devise a better way of packaging them so you can't open the box.

But because they don't do this...I WOULD check inside the box to make sure there are two pins. My sister and I bought some Princess Mystery Crest boxes, went outside to open them, and one of the boxes only had one pin inside...so someone had obviously taken the other one.

I definitely don't condone feeling the baggies or anything though. :nono: Like others have said...the mystery is what makes it fun, and facilitates trading!
 
On Saturday we were at the store in DCA across from the Little Mermaid ride. There were three guys and a lady opening Princess Mystery Crest pin boxes, picking what they wanted and then putting the left overs back in the boxes. I said something to the cast member and she said there is nothing she could do. They should put all the mystery boxes behind the counter like at LGM and the customer has to buy them before opening. This group of people did not buy the boxes before searching all of the boxes on the rack.

Wow, I can't believe they said they couldn't do anything about it. Disney should definitely put them behind locked cabinets and make the people pay for them before opening. WOW!
 
That's really unfair!! They definately shouldn't be allowed to do that and Disney should enable CMs to stop it! I agree I get slightly peeved when I get doubles of things but that's the fun of pin trading and then everyone has a chance. They should at least tape the boxes, or put them in plain site as a deterrant.
 
Ugh, that's awful! I would never open the boxes/baggies in the stores because, like others said, half the fun is the surprise of what you get. I will, however, start peeking right at checkout to make sure I got both baggies.


It seems like people think they can get away with naughty stuff at WoD because it's so big. :( I've seen people sent away for shoplifting more than once there.
 
For awhile they were putting tape on them. They'll probably start up again if it gets worse. To be honest, while I think some people are definitely just trying to cheat the system, I think there is also a large number of tourists that just don't get the concept of mystery boxes. Vinylmations seem to get it worse than the pins though. And that CM that said they couldn't do anything? I would guess more likely didn't want​ to do anything.
 
I was at WOD the other day talking to a cast member as she was arranging mystery boxes on the rack. She grabbed one and quickly opened it. It was empty! Not a single pin!
 
And just when you thought you'd seen it all.

I just don't think I could have kept quiet! But, I have a big mouth!
 
That is appalling. I agree with others that say that is absolutely theft. And that the CM who said they couldn't do anything was either lazy or too timid to have a confrontation. They ought to have called security; surely they're empowered to handle shoplifters? This is the same.
 
I think that's a situation where I would have involved a manager..because that is damaging merchandise if they don't pay for it. It can't be sold to anyone else as a mystery box.

I think they should glue the boxes closed like they do the vinylmations. It is difficult to get that glue up off the box because it is so well packaged. It can be done but not inconspicuously like these mystery boxes. It would be so easy to take a single black baggie out or even both and put the box back and no one would know until they picked it up. I just hope they change the packaging and don't decide that it's too much trouble and take them away.
 
I'll admit to having felt bags(just bags, not opening boxes and then feeling those bags) to see if I could guess the pin, but I also am only after very specific pins and don't live in a place where I can easily trade. What I ended up deciding to do however was to go home and purchase exactly the pin I wanted on Ebay, rather than play the chance game OR cheating the system by touching bags. I tend to collect pins specifically because I like the artwork, which is annoying when there's only one or two pins I want out of a large mystery set. I can't imagine actually opening packages in search of one specific pin without buying.
 
The Pin Trader shop in Tomorrowland at DLR had a great set up... The pins were behind the counters and you had to ask to see one. They kept their eye on you after they handed it to you, which I think is a good system. I opened up my box at the counter AFTER I purchased it because the girls working there were super excited about the pins I got and wanted to see. I wish every shop had a system like that. I don't get why some places have them behind the counter and some don't. It's appalling how cheap and rude people can be at times...
 
sorry i didnt read through all the posts so on the verge of being repeated////// NO CLASS. Somebody wasnt brough up right. These folks probably throw their trash out the car window, never yeild a seat to an elderly person, let their kids run around a restaurant...you know what i mean. all of those things are my pet peevs BTW.

Princessbecky brought up such a good point, always folks, always open every single box at the register as you pay to make sure the "hidden" pin or sacs of pins are accounted for. I was told by ED (awesome CM) at DTD WDW that people try to steal the second pin. STEALING FROM FREAKIN DISNEY WORLD really people??? Perhaps you should be at your second job not stealing pins in disneyworld...good gravy i'm gonna punch somebody.
