This morning, I got an answer to a trade request I sent last night:

I appreciate your interest in my pin. It appears you've request my pin several times and I believed we communicated before regarding it. I, like you, am a big fan of these characters, so it's going to take a lot for me to relinquish that pin. I will be frank, if we trade, I will get the better deal. I will try and make it a one on one trade but that depends on what is available.

With this say, do you still want to trade? If you do, I will review your "trade" list but before I do I need something from you. Can you review your trade list and tell me if there are any pins on that list that you will not consider in this counteroffer. If you do not list them, then I will assume that all the pins on your list are up for grabs. Again I will try and focus on a one to one trade. If you pass on my counteroffer, I totally understand and I wish you the best in your quest for the pin.

I bolded what caught my eye as WTH? I mean, I always try to be fair in the trade, even though my initial offer might be too low or too high in the other's person opinion. I realize "better deal" is all in the eye of the beholder, but to say it outright like that? Like they say on ESPN's NFL Monday Night show "C'Mon Man"

This just seemed so left field for a hobby answer to me. I responded back with

Thank you for the return e-mail. I am sorry, while I am willing to trade up at times pending on how much I want a pin, I go into a trade trying to be fair to both sides

All I can say is WOW... Please let us know what pin it is and hopefully one of us true lovers of this hobby could help you out... I know your wanted pins are tough to find, but to get a response like that is sad... Truly takes the fun out of this hobby... Good Luck on finding your pin Bill...
 
I've heard a few stories of traders that flat out tell you they are selling your pin for money so they will only trade up in value. I think someone said their pinpics ID ends in numbers.

Hopefully you can find the pin in a trade that is mutually beneficial :)

Funny thing is, I already have the pin, I was trying to get a second one in the hopes of making it a trader for other Scrooge pins

That is TOO funny!!! To me, the counteroffer was a way of saying "I don't really want to trade, but if you REALLY want to, I am gonna take advantage of you!!!"

Dear Broncobilly83, i will also be happy to trade with you. I will say that i want 2 Le 100s and at least 5 other pins, becuase this pin is dear to me..i bought with my allowance. To let you know when we are done with offers and counteroffers you will be cursing and finally crying on the floor rocking back and forth, but you do want this pin so expect this to happen. I often dont answer PM's or emails for days, but please hold all your pins on your traders until i am good and ready to type. I prefer you use a DC but i never do and expect to wait a good long time til i ship because i hate licking stamps. finally, i always appreciate a generous ZAP along with the 7-10 pins i want for my pin, for having the pleasure of dealing with me. Also could you please not forget to remind me several times just what a great deal I'm getting and how normally you would not let these pins go to such a slob as me, but since you are in a good mood, you will deign to trade with my unworthy kind? P.S. I mean really, has anyone ever told you just how rare and hard to find these pins you're asking me for are?! I mean, just so you know! They are extremely rare! Not like those common toe jam lowlife pins you are sending my way in return.

I appreciate your comments and like you try to be upfront and fair whenever possible. Unfortunately trading can be a "subjective" matter and what one man values another may not. In particular when you used the Pinpics comment * I am open to counter offers. Please let me know!! you somewhat open the door to Pandora's box. In addition we both know there are only 2 people trading that pin and I've received several offers from you before. With this say, I obviously not the best source for trying to acquire this pin. I also suspect that the other guy is even a harder nut to crack.

So let me mentioned Ebay again. Ebay has a search feature that alters you when a particular pin becomes available. If you're really serious for the pin, then Ebay may be your best source. Good luck and good hunting.

Oh, I agree trading is subjective, and I use the Counter Offers in the hopes of opening dialogue if the other party feels I am not offering the pin for them, etc, but when a response comes back "I will be frank, if we trade, I will get the better deal."; while up front and honest, is not a trade I am comfortable with, as I am usually willing to trade higher in the other person's favor if it is a high pin on my wants, but it just does not feel right going into a discussion with one party feeling that way right off the bat

You forgot to tell him you would not be shipping until his pins arrived and were inspected under a magnifying glass for absolute perfection.
