This may have been addressed before BUT I feel it's necessary to bring it up again if that's the case. I, for one, simply love pins and pin trading. It is such a wonderful hobby and the people involved (at least most of them) are the best folks you'd ever want to meet. Anyway after saying all that I once again want to warn everyone that when using pin backs DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use the ones that come with a little allen type wrench. They WILL ruin your pin post. They will dent and possibly bend your post. I had this happen to a few of my cherished Jumbo pins. I don't know why companies sell these pins but I can tell you this. They aren't pin collectors, you can bet on that. There are pin backs out there that hold the heavier pins on much better. They fit over the pin post and firmly keep the pin in place without a dent or bend. They are kind of a push on pin. Usually a gold or silver color.

I cannot stress enough how damaging wrench type pin backs are. They WILL ruin your pin over time. As I said, you can get many different type of pin backs but believe me when I tell DON'T USE THE PIN BACKS THAT HAVE WRENCHES!!! Happy trading everyone.

I have heard this too, i use what i call hat backs? that work really well for pins I'm wearing and i havent noted any damage.

Are these the ones you guys are talking about?

I'm not 100% sure which pin backs this thread is about but I sure want to avoid whichever ones they are.

Good to know! Thanks!
Is there a specific brand you use?

Yes they are on e-bay they look kind of like a little hat and they are usually gold or silver in color. They push right on and hold really well without denting or bending your pin post. Just type in pin backs and they should come up. I will try to find site and post later.

There are now several ebay sellers who offer the 'hat' style pin backs. I love them. They come in silver, gold or brass tone, but basically they look like this:

When searching for this type of backing, you might also want to look for "tie tacks" in the description as that is what they originally were designed for. Tie tacks are basically just small pins with longer posts designed to hold ties in place without being ostentatious. There is another style that is taller and bulkier with a little bulb at the top. Got a few of each somewhere around, as I end up framing the majority of my collection and just have jars of backs set aside for the sake of perhaps needing them someday, lol.

How do those little hat-style pin backs work? :) I just use the butterfly clasp style pin backs for my pins (the ones you pinch to take off), and those hold pretty well but I would love some of these to make them as secure as possible... thanks! <3

Wow graet to know i just purchased a bunch of the wrench ones and now i am returning them thank god i have been to busy to fool with them yet i would have been seriously upset had they damaged my pins

Managed to find an adequate pic of the other type of tie-tack back

These, along with the other type, are what I have if I need them. The type with the chain & bar are old-style tie-tacks, with the bar designed to fit into a buttonhole and keep the tie from moving. I think I may have more than 100 of each type with a handful of the chain & bar ones lying around somewhere if I can actually find them again...the things we forget we have until someone brings it up, lol.

Hi PJ89. I'm not quite sure how they work but I do know they fit over your post by pushing them on and it almost feels like they're sring loaded, If anyone else knows how they actually work please feel free to pipe in. I just know they don't bend or dent your post.
