With my wife a Sorcerer Mickey Collector, I am usually on the hunt for Sorcerer Hats that represent Sorcerer Mickey, like this one

This morning, I noticed it was back up to the front of "What's New" on PinPics with the following comment

all the hats unsold by the end of D23 were destroyed. so less than the edition size is currently available

I am confused as most of 2011's D23 pins, like the "Donald as" series that were unsold first went to the Disney Museum and then finally to DS.com, so if true, why are this year's pins being treated differently
 
Er, I have no idea why they would do that. I'd love to hear where this information came from, and why it was done. I really like those sorcerer hats, and this is going to make them harder to find.
 
I would love to know where the information came from, it seems very odd of disney to throw away the chance of money. I would have thought they would be put in stores or online.
 
yup gotta agree, Disney doesnt usually spend money and then waste it,<which is what destroying them would be> esp when they can sell the items... I mean look at the This is love event pins, they didnt sell well at the event and low and behold they didnt sell well at EPcot center, but they did eventually sell out....

Methinks that someone is yanking your chains here gang, just an IMHO,

You would think that, but I am hoping the person who posted that on the PinPics listing sees the forum post and joins the conversation. I believe they are a regularly posting member here, and hopefully they can add more information as to where they got that info, etc.
 
This is really disappointing if true. It's pretty bizarre though because, as people stated above, Disney doesn't usually waste an opportunity to make money.
 
I have no idea if the pins got destroyed but the pins that showed up at the museum and ds.com were sold by Treasures of the Walt Disney Archive. The hat is a WDI and Sorcerer ticket holder exclusive so even if they weren't destroyed, I doubt they will ever show up anywhere but WDI for sale again.
 
lol.. sounds like a tall tell to me. we all know they don't throw money away. I call big BS on this one. Just wait a little while and we will see them show up. makes me think of the lost box of pins that makes the r/c worth so much more... also a bs story but anyone can post anything on pinpics. the info there is wrong a lot these days... silly ppl
 
I don't know if its true or not, but I wanted one and had a Sorcerer friend go to purchase this pin for me, and it was sold out. So, whether they would destroy unsold pins is beyond me, but I am sure this pin sold out. It probably just mostly went to tourists.
 
D23 has sold unsold D23 pins at their D23 shopping days at MoG. They are usually spread out at random around the store on the shopping days as they aren't usually MoG merchandise. However, with regards to those Sorcerer hats, I can see they destroying them. They were exclusives for a package that cost $1500. You could only buy them if you were a Sorcerer package holder. I wonder if they would fear a lawsuit if they sold them later after saying they were exclusive? Not really sure it's worth it, but I know they didn't sell a ton of those. They were LE300, 1 for each member but they had them on Sunday for sale still and only a few of the sorcerer people were there to buy pins. They got the Designer Fairytale couples sets because they were obviously worth the trouble, but these just missed most of their radars.
 
Didn't Disney also destroy the black & white Dateline 1955 pins that were unsold at that event? If so, that means there is precedent for this.

Maybe Disney found out which Sorcerers didn't get it and mailed it to them as one final freebie?
 
I find it hard to believe Disney would want to throw away money, they usually find someway to sell them, but if it is true, then it's their money to lose and I guess to them that's okay and doesn't hurt them.

I could see how they couldn't really sell them again at another place after billing them as a Sorcerer Exclusive. If you spent $1500 for that special package and thought you were getting an exclusive item, it would be kind of lame to hear of everyone else getting to buy one a few months later. There are some folks who would be very unhappy with that. It does sound wasteful though. I don't know whether they sold out. I know for sure they had them still on Saturday but there was a whole lot more convention to go still at that point.
 
I could also see them putting these on the 1 for 1 hat boards or in the grab bags at D23 sales, if they ever do that again. Or save them for sorcerer packages at the next expo?

Ooh, save for next expo. They should count how many they have left and put them in the grab bags/freebie bags for the first X number of people that signed up?

oh geez let me explain my comment on pinpics, UNLIKE other event pins this pin in particular was made for the sorcerers package, becuse this pin this ONE pin was made for a select group as a privilege disney can not sell this pin after said event was over. the D23 donalds where for members so after the expo they were divided to other D23 locations and sales.

i was told they were going to be taken back and destroyed by the manager at MOG, he also informed me that as on this year AP's and PP's will no longer be for sale. later i found out that this is becuse they have a new contract with a new supplier and they are now only permitted to distribute APs and PPs as gifts and boards and events and not allowed to make a profit off of samples.

those and most event pins ended up at company D
