ah sorry i had to go for a sec.

i feel like both the croods and monster U are strong contenders for the oscar.

*SPOILERS*

the croods deals with a father coming to terms with the fact that he might not be able to protect his family and the idea of self-innovation. it also deals with people in general's intrinsic fear of anything new and how sometimes being open-minded to the new is the only way to survive.

monsters u deals with characters learning that no matter how much they want something, it just might not happen and sometimes you have to change your goals/partner up. mike always wanted to be a scarer, but he ended up being an assistant to a scarer instead. even though the scarer in question is his best friend, mike's dream still basically is never fulfilled. i mean i don't really like the idea of putting this kind of message in a movie for kids, who should chase their dreams without reservation, but i feel it's a strong message regardless. also it's a nice social commentary on the current lack of *dream* jobs in the states and the academy seems to love those kind of stuff.

as for despicable me... gru ain't got no need for no oscar! he and is family made over a billion dollars in the box office!

sorry this was long and rant-ish xD

Anna vs. Elsa

I've found it very interesting to see just how much more popular Elsa is compared to Anna. I saw the movie with my nieces and was completely enamored with Anna. She is smart, sassy, fun, and energetic. I really thought the movie was much more her story, than her sister's. I also thought my nieces were going to come away really loving Anna for those reasons, plus she really is the hero of the story... so imagine my surprise when both nieces (and nearly everyone else who has seen the movie) seems to be in love with Elsa.

I just don't get her appeal (although the Coronation dressed doll is amazing!!) I've had a few conversations about this with coworkers. I keep saying "But Elsa is SO mean and cold. She isn't someone you'd want to be around." And the conclusion I have, sorry to say it, is I really think it boils down to Elsa being "sexier." It's classic femme fatale attributes squaring off against "nice girl" charm. I look at her platinum blonde hair (not red), her curvier body, her glittery sparkly nightgown/dress and of course little girls are going to be drawn to that over the more realistic Anna.

I love that there are two princesses that compliment each other, I'm just thinking there is no turning back now is there? Everything is sexy. All of the time.

PS My only complaint about the movie is I wanted more back story into Elsa's powers. Why was she born with them? Was it a family thing? A curse? Was it a first born thing? And also, it would have been nice to see more interaction with her trying to hide her powers from the staff. It was hard to feel sympathetic towards her, especially after she freaked out during the coronation.

I think Elsa might be more popular because there are a lot of people who can related to be isolated for feeling like they're different, but it's harder (at least for me) to relate to someone who is bold and brave (even if it's a trait you admire) :) But I know people's personalities differ, and it's a personal opinion.

I really don't think that's the case concerning Elsa's popularity. While I do agree her merch is prettier in comparison to Anna, there are a lot of reasons to love Elsa's character. I don't find her cold and mean- I find her as a girl who had to conceal her emotions all her life out of fear of hurting those around her.

Elsa is a character who through the course of the movie went from emotional out of fear, to complete happiness in being able to finally feel her emotions and power to their fullest capacity, to complete horror in feeling her fears of hurting those around her being realized. And in the end of it all, with the help of her sister, she triumphs in discovering the meaning and power of true love.

She loved Anna and really lived a life she thought she had to- self sacrificing in the sense of staying away from everyone and not being able to be herself. However it was Anna who saved her by showing- through her own act of self sacrificing love- that love was the key to conquering her (Elsa's) fears.

Maybe my being a sensitive girl who finds herself fighting with her own emotions often gave me a little more empathy towards Elsa  I think they did a beautiful job in developing both girl's characters in opposite yet complimenting ways. But I think Elsa's character development definitely gives anyone more reasons to love her beyond superficial reasons.

My humble two cents, of course :)

the girl's got ice powers. she cool.
Ariel is selfish, and irresponsible yet many people love her, why? She got fins and red hair. It's simple.
That and the fact that they're different from a lot of people.
Another factor could be Idina Menzel. I know my sisters love Elsa just cause of her.

She was born with them. In the movie, the troll (grandpa) asks whether she was born or cursed and the King answers "born."

The King & Queen wanted Elsa to conceal her powers instead of using them, which she could have since they lived in an icy country.

This. I don't wanna hijack the thread, but Elsa's appeal to me can be best summed up through "Let it Go" because I am gay. When I was in the closet, I did try to conceal and not feel. After I came out, I did just let it go and embrace who I am. I'm still building my castle and all, but yeah. I'm a big ol' (ice) Queen and I truly love this character. :)

<3

for me Elsa doesn't come across mean and cold, she comes off as terrified and repressed all stemming from the fear or hurting Anna again.

before the accident that happened when they were toddlers, elsa seemed to be pretty close to anna both relationship-wise and personality-wise. when they were playing in the snow elsa showed that she can have just as much fun as anna. however, the truama of the accident (which is as much anna's fault as it is elsa, if not moreso) and her dad telling her to "conceal don't feel" etc etc causes elsa's personality to drastically shift.

i personally really don't like elsa's snow queen get up (please don't hurt me)
it looks really awkward with the see thru sleeves and the weird flappy cape thing and the dress with the high slit. just a bit too over the top for me but i guess that was the point: for her to be the opposite of the meek girl hiding behind closed doors she "had to be".

in the end i prefer elsa over anna because what anna does for elsa in that scene is what elsa has been doing for anna ever since the accident: sacrificing her freedom, her life, so anna will be safe.

which is why i bought the LE coronation elsa doll!
see! not off topic!!

Why do you say Elsa is SO mean? For those who didn't know what she was going through, she appeared cold, but in reality she had been forced to live a virtually isolated life, always having to conceal who she really was on the inside. Ever since she was little, she was living in fear of harming her sister, a sister who loved her and wanted to spend time with her, which just made things that much more painful for Elsa, because Elsa wanted to be with Anna just as much. I think most people are attracted to Elsa because she creates this overwhelming sense of breaking free and being your true self, not what others want you to be. She also represents overcoming fear, big burdening fears in a persons life, that they finally are brave enough to overcome. As the audience watches her transform into a more confident being, I feel she grows on the audience, and they become attached to her personality traits.

When her powers are revealed in the ballroom party scene, we see her world begin to seemingly crumble, then, during the Let it Go scene, we see her world begin to be built up again (literally). We see something beautiful blossom from a situation that was quite ugly.

Totally agree, and lovely way to put it! It's what makes that scene so beautiful in my opinion (well tragically beautiful, but not tragic in that we know it had a happy outcome ;D) Both sisters came to an understanding of one another. And I guess if I had any complaint about the movie, it was maybe that that part wasn't elaborated on. But, I don't know, simplicity is sometimes the better route- let the audience draw out the lesson of the moment rather than it being spelled out =)

And I like how you brought it around and back on topic :D

I want to love both Princesses equally, I like both because they both have traits I can relate to, but as soon as Elsa sang "Let It Go" I couldn't help liking her just a little more. All the songs are good too, but I can sing "Let It Go" 20 times a day, it's just so touching and powerful, and that's Elsa's character.

what i love about elsa is that shes reletable to anyone who has ever felt alone.
they know what it's like and they know how she feels
plus it does help that she has amazing ice powers and i do agree with the let it go sequence from the movie.(which is what made me fall for her)
and also anyone who has a sister they want to protect
but i love anna to
because she soo upbeat and fun.
she wants to go out there and see the world.
and she bravely goes after her sister

i love elsa and i love anna
but i like elsa just a tiny bit more

and i feel bad for elsa during/after the coronation
i dont blame her for running away when everyone was afraid of her

When are the academy awards ??

Nominations come out this Friday or Thursday? Cant remember, but I think Frozen is a shoe in and compared to the other animations I believe that Frozen is definitely the front runner. Definitely better than Monsters U, the Croods and Despicable Me 2. Frozen already has the best reviews out of all the animated movies for the year so it is a definite shoe in for the Oscar.

I agree with this. Elsa has become my favorite princess because I can relate to her. I often feel isolated and suffer from social anxiety, like she does during her coronation. I'm an introvert and I never could relate to the outgoing and brave princesses because I'm hesitant and quiet and I can't help that. I also love being alone but my family is the most important thing to me, like Elsa. She's an inspiration to me and ever since I've seen the movie, I simple tell myself to "Let it Go" when I'm feeling over whelmed, as lame as it sounds it helps a bit. Yes Elsa has cool powers and is beautiful, but I also relate to her like I never have to another princess before.

sorry the title is slipping my mind.

Are you getting it mixed up with original song? I dont think Tangled got nominated for the original score but it was nominated for best original song in 2010 but lost it to Toy Story 3.

...
see
pixar wins everything!!

Haha yeah I was annoyed that Brave won the Oscar last year over WiR, WiR was so much better!

I think this year Frozen is a strong contender as the Pixar entry isnt very strong. It would have been interesting and a very close call if it were Toy story 3 and Frozen but if it were Toy Story 3 would have won that won. Toy Story is a huge hit and will probably be the biggest animation film of all time for quite some time.

I hope frozen wins best animated movie oscar! As I think it definitely deserves it the most this year! I loved monsters U, but i think frozen was a much better movie! I love brave, but I think wreck it Ralph deserved the oscar last year too. I will be dissapointed if frozen doesn't win!!!

+1

I love Elsa but honestly relate to Anna more. The whole sister issue- my older sister and I we use to be very close and then she got into high school and suddenly feeling like strangers. She just wasn't there anymore. She was the perfect one and I was always the average normal one. I wanted to get away and start my life , since I felt alone at home. My mom worked all day and night as a nurse, she didn't allow me to go out with other kids . Just being over cautious and didn't allow anyone over. So I was always home alone . Until high school which is where first time in forever comes into play lol
elsa is in no way mean. And I don't think it's the sexy part either. Maybe just being able to be who you are, and realizing that it's okay to open up and let people into your life. Something like that lol

All of your comments have really made me see a different side of this . . . totally agree with your comments, especially relating to Elsa being alone, isolated, hiding things. Very interesting stuff and now I see why these dolls are so popular.

Glad the board has been able to shed some light on this and also super happy your tips helped me secure the dolls for my niece as well. What a great community!

I second this! Elsa is my second favorite. (Ariel is always number one). Well said! I also relate to Anna since I was very close to my brother when we were younger, but he also shut me out and I never knew why until a few years ago. Do you wanna Build a snowman had me in tears when I first heard it. But I still find myself relating to Elsa more. I am extremely shy, and feel isolated all the time. I have certain talents that I hide, out of fear too. Elsa is an inspiration, and let it go is such a powerful song! I completely agree with you Siren, and feel the same way!

And on the Ariel subject:

I don't think she's a brat, she is very independent and I believe that makes her strong. "Bratty" to me implies rudeness and disrespect, whining, and not caring about anyone else but yourself. It upsets me that people think so little of her, casting her off as "selfish" and "bratty". She's a young teenager ( like myself in that respect) who is different from those around her, with bigger dreams and aspirations. She knows what she wants, and she's willing to 'go the distance' and do whatever it takes to get her there. I don't believe she thought she was putting anyone but herself in danger if she failed, and she probably felt unwanted and isolated by her father because he doesn't understand her or her dreams. Which I can relate to. I'm not saying she's perfect, but NO ONE IS. Everyone makes mistakes, especially early on in life. She's flawed, but I think that's what makes her strong. She has amazing qualities, and bad ones as well.

Phew... Sorry for the rant... Just Ariel is my all time favorite Character and I hate seeing people 'belittle' her if you will.
