That is expected but then again not everyone will go rushing in to buy Aurora at high prices on the secondary market, I have a feeling that the secondary market will get flooded with Auroras and as a result it will drive her price down. If Ariel, Eric and Ursula are selling for less than $200 I would imagine Aurora would be the same.
I think you will find that even if she sells out very quickly she will be up on the secondary market and will probably sell for only around $200 at most initially before slowly increasing as a result of fewer dolls being on the market. By the way dont forget that the market is still full of Tinker Bells and Zarina's they just did not sell very well on the secondary market and right now you can buy one for less than $100 which isnt too bad at all.
The one who I think will be harder will definitely be Maleficent, I think she may go up to the $300 price right away.
It is all about supply and demand, yes the dolls may sell out fast and yes they may get listed at ridiculous prices but that does not mean that they will sell. Just because the Frozen dolls sold for such a high price that does not mean that will be the case for the others as well. I mean even after the Frozen hype you have some dolls like Cindy, Ariel and Wedding Rapunzel that are not breaking the bank to buy.
Then again that will also depend on what the doll looks like and if it is executed well or not.
I think it will be LE 5,000 or at the very most LE 6,000 but nothing more than that, especially since Disney bases the LE size on the popularity of the character.
I actually think that you are right about the scalpers, they will definitely be buying the dolls and listing them on the market. Not sure how long you have been collecting the dolls and if you were collecting prior to the Frozen hype but what usually happens is that they tend to flood the secondary market and because of this influx in dolls people can drive the price. Again it is not the scalpers that drive the price but the buyers. I think you will find some scalpers will probably list her around the $500 mark and other around the $250 mark. Then you will have those that will list them for auction, the auctions will probably get you around the $200 early $200 mark and that will probably set the benchmark for a while before people start paying $250 for her and so. Then you will also have the preordered listings who will probably list items for around $300+
Either way I think people keep panicking that Frozen has changed doll collecting but in my honest opinion I do not think it has, I think Frozen is a blip and yes the current dolls released have gone up in price because there are fewer available on the secondary market as most of them start making their way to collectors homes but those that are upcoming or just recently released are so fresh and new to the market that it shouldn't be hard to find a better deal for Aurora.
Again it comes down to supply and demand which is economics 101. If people panic and pay $500 up for Aurora out of fear that they cannot get her for less then of course this will inflate the price of the doll. But I dont think this will happen. As you mentioned Aurora is just not that popular enough compared to other characters so you should be fine to get her at cost. Maleficent will be harder but shouldnt be too bad to get either.
It's absolutely 100% supply and demand and it definitely falls on the buyer as much as the seller. I am a doll collector in general - different types not just disney - and have gotten a few of the LEs in the past (Mostly just the ones I like) so the ebb and flow of the doll world isn't new to me. Perhaps it's just that the Frozen deal is just very in-your-face that it becomes hard to ignore. Other doll lines I have collected go through the same thing - the market floods and then recedes but there have been times were it floods and doesn't come down for a while. You just never know.
But you are right, we will more than likely see the market saturate and calm down again. Gotta say, Polaris, from some of your others posts I've read you always seem to hit the nail on the head! Good to have such a knowledgeable collector around!
LOL thanks Sweet Cheshire! I am a die hard collector and try stay on top of things especially since I am disadvantaged from living in Australia. I just did up a "Disney" budget last week and with flights, hotels, spending money and the cost of upcoming dolls and merchandise I am forecasting to spend about $20k on my Disney habit. I guess I wont be saving for a house this year!
Soooo bummed out that they didn't make 17" Mulan she was my favorite DISNEY "PRINCESS" out of the whole princess line. I thought she would look amazing in her outfit!:cry::cry:
I really hope you guys are right and Aurora won't be popular, then I might have a chance to get her
But...I'm just asking, because this hasn't come up in the discussion about demand/price yet: What about Maleficent? With the movie being released just a few months prior people will know who Aurora and Maleficent are, Disney will probably advertise the new classic movie release and if the movie is popular the LE classic dolls will probably be sought after, wouldn't they? :-/
I think your train of though is similar to what scalpers would think in terms of the LE dolls. (Not saying you are a scalper but is something that scalpers would think to justify why they would buy lots more dolls hoping that people will react towards the movie in a similar manner as they did for Frozen).
I think every year people always freak themselves out with these releases and as a result come up with so many reasons why things could go wrong. Which is fair enough because the more we want something the more we worry when we know there is a threat towards getting it.
personally I think you will be fine so long as if you are online on release day. People need to stop comparing the doll releases to Frozen. These dolls were around much long than frozen was.
My my predication is that yes the movie may compliment the movie but it is very different to the original so there could be just as much a negative effect as there would be a positive one. Also Maleficent is aimed more towards young adults/adults and not kids therefore I do lot think that the merchandise hype will be as big as frozen. Besides it is a live action film so it is unlikely that this movie will have a huge impact on the blu ray merchandise release later this year mainly.
Just a thought I was thinking if they ever remade Snow White earlier personally I would love a Snow White that looked more like her instead of the one we have which to me looks like a more mature version of Snow. Does anyone prefer any of the remade characters? I.e coronation Elsa, wedding Rapunzel? I am tempted to get wedding Rapunzel to go along side my blonde one but you never really hear any one talk about the wedding one.
Does anyone think maleficent will get a higher edition size than Aurora?Usually the princess will get more than the villian but in this instance Maleficent is more popular than Aurora. They could do 5000 maleficent and 3000 Aurora or something.

Like many others have said it is very highly unlikely that the villain will be a higher edition than the princess as these dolls originated with the princesses. Also there are some die hard Aurora fans out there. I mean Tiana was not a super popular princess and yet they still released 5,000 of her so it is unlikely that they would reduce it for a classic princess.
I do agree that Maleficent is a popular villain, she was the fastest selling designer villain so I would probably say that she will have a higher LE size, just not sure if Disney will increase it something like 4,000-5,000 or if they will just increase her by 500 to 3,000 only.
I am interested to see if they do release a prince Philip this year, if they do then that will mean that next year we could possibly be getting two male dolls, Aladdin and Jafar which would give us the first ever male villain doll which would be pretty cool.
Even if we don't get a Prince Phillip doll, I am expecting there will be three dolls next year for Aladdin. Disney likes to go all out in terms of both limited and mass release merchandise during years they have D23 Expos. That is usually why they save their biggest Diamond Edition releases for the D23 years. Plus, it wouldn't make sense to have just a Jasmine and Jafar doll, the standard Princess and Villain release, when Aladdin is the main character of the movie and even in the title. If Phillip isn't released and a Aladdin is, then I think its safe to say that Disney plans on releasing three dolls for each D23 year if we are going by the last one and the 2015 one.
Also I am not entirely sure if Aladdin is confirmed to be the bluray diamond edition for fall release next year, there has not been a confirmation from Disney yet, whilst I believe it is highly likely it is still based on speculation and nothing has been confirmed yet.
I'm sure that they will.

to capitalize on the Christmas rush.
I don't know but I think that Aladdin might be released for Spring of 2015I'm sure that they will.Disney saves the princess movies for the Fallto capitalize on the Christmas rush.
