Since we're discussing whether or not we should have ties in the auction house, lets add to this list of things to discuss are threads in the pin discussion like "Should I auction this pin". Face palm! Let's see, you want to gauge interest or drum up promotion for your auction? Either way I don't agree with it. If the people respond they want it, you can search their traders and see if you think there are enough positive matches. Likewise, you can see if noone has interest you won't auction it. I consider this almost like a speculative reserve. Auction your pin or not. Don't advertise or try to gauge interest first.

Also, I'm not directing this at anyone, or the last person to post this kind of question. All of them as a whole. And don't be afraid to voice your opinion. I see a lot of these threads with the people doing the action in question dominating the responses in defense but often the people that oppose are just apathetic. I am open for debate and I think it's obvious which way I lean.
 
I personally HATE the should I auction threads. I never thought about them in the sense of they just use them to promote or drum up interest. But you 100000% right. I mean there was one that I even posted on! The pin they were asking about was kind of like...come on...are you kidding me...you really have to ask should you auction a Designer Cinderella! Give me a break. Plus if we cut down on some common thread types we dont tax the server as much
 
I dunno, I have done it before and didn't think anything wrong of it. I think it's okay to gauge interest because many are new to auctioning and may put a pin up for auction that gets under bid where they may have had more success in just trading. When I asked, I was really grateful for the feedback and suggestions. I don't get particularly bothered when other people ask either. It's nice to be given a heads up on what is going to auction lest it be a pin I really, really love and otherwise might miss (I don't check the auction forum frequently so sometimes I miss things) :dunno:
 
I don't see anything wrong with it because I think some are genuinely concerned about whether it is worth their time or not to host an auction. Perhaps we should have some sort of question subforum for things like this, and similar topics (is this a good trader? What is this pin worth? Etc. not necessarily questions that revolve around pins but more trades/value?)
 
I don't think it's bad that people ask, but I think there should be a sticky for people to post on ONE thread. That way it doesn't clutter the boards too much.
 
I could care less either way. I read pretty much every thread that posts, sometimes i reply to them, sometimes i dont. And in general, people who post those threads go ahead and auction the pin anyway, regardless of what the response is.

Maybe instead a person should put the pin in the trade house and if they get a lot of replies, then say, "hey, too many people want this, i am auctioning it." And if they got no replies, then obviously it would not have done well in the auction house.

Also, for big VHTF pins, a heads up a few days or a week prior to listing the auction doesnt hurt anyone.

Side note:: Putting a pin in the trade house, and listing it as a "best offer trade" is a freaking auction folks. you want best offers, put it in the auction house.

*Something else that needs to be brought back up... once we get more Mods and the upgrade I think... is the idea of reserves on the auction house to protect the auctioneers just a tiny bit. I rarely see an auction that gets a crappy bid, and no others. but it might make folks feel better about their auctions.*
 
As one who is presently guilty of this, I think I should chime in. :3

Logically, ~I~ don't see anything wrong with it, but I certainly can see where people would get frustrated with it. But here is my justification (which someone has already voiced). I am quite new to things and am still having a hard time learning what a pin's true value is. I have a handful of pins with a good t/w ratio that I can't get squat for through pinpics, so that's not a fail safe science. On the other hand, lets be honest, we all want the most out of our pins, especially when we start out. Or maybe that's just me. But it is rare that I come across a pin people ACTUALLY want, so yes, I want to get the most out of it. But, of course, being so green, I can easily be undersold. So, twice now, I have tested the waters with an auction pin. The first had a 29/135 or something ratio, but there was not much interest so I ended up putting out the TA and managed a good trade with it. And presently, I have one up that is getting some good buzz so I will put it up for auction.

But I think it can be easy to forget that many of us are new here and are still getting our sea legs to the whole system. So testing the waters is something we newbies have to do from time to time to make sure we're not getting in over our heads OR fishing with no bait. ^^;

Again, I have absolutely NO problem with a ruling that says no to the "should I" threads. That's perfectly fine. Just tossing my two cents out. :3

Move 'em to a sub-thread in the Auction House. That way those that care can see it, but those that don't don't have to wade through them in General Discussion.
 
I like the idea of a single stickie, maybe in the auction house. Or a sub forum for questions. But to blast it in the pin discussion thread seems out of place. Some of the ones doing it are not newer either, they know their pin well and are doing it, I feel, to advertise. On other forums I am on you can pay money to have your auction or sale thread stickied but there is alwasy someone that posts in the high traffic forum an advertisement.

Also, I added the "I could care less" option just because I think many feel that way. So far it's pretty even.
 
I think that most of the time people who are doing it are newer members and it is a good way for them to gauge whether or not there is interest. It can be hard to know if your pin will do well or not if you have been here a while. I don't have a problem with it. If you don't like to read them don't. Pretty simple.
 
I at first voted I didn't care. But honestly after thinking about it. I would be upset if I put up a pin and it went for nothing. I am assuming you have to pick a winner? I haven't bid or auctioned. So I don't know for sure. I know it's a chance you take but I would sure like to have some idea that people want it.

I do think a sticky or post in the auction house might be a better idea though.
 
With this response and the other one in the thread about tied leaderboards I am guessing you are for the laissez faire approach?

What on earth is wrong with trying to find out whether a trade auction might get desirable bids?? If someone doesn't like it then he/she doesn't have to respond. If these threads were taking over the forum I might understand the concern, but I just don't think that's the case. I'm sorry, but I'm just not seeing why anyone would have a problem with them.
 
I like it when they are kept in the Trading forum. Kind of like "Hey, I'm thinking of auctioning this pin, what do you think?" And since people usually almost always say OH HEY I offer you THIS pin if you wanna trade it, it kind of just makes sense it would be kept in that thread ya'know? I don't think they belong in the pin discussion forum, because advertising a potential trade/auction/sale isn't really a DISSCUSION. That's my only gripe :3
 

This is similar to my views on it. I am all for people asking, it's just that it needs to be in the proper section.
 
I really think a sub forum in the auction section would be the best idea. That way, those who are interested know to go directly there to see what may be coming up and to chime in.

I personally don't have pins that are valuable enough to use to bid in an auction, so it doesn't affect me, but I do often read the threads just for the drool factor.

No, I just have seen a lot of complaining lately and if I was going to want to ban anything it would be that. I don't have a problem with wanting it in a different forum, but people are asking others opinions which does fit into the discussion forum.

I am all about personal responsibility though. If you don't like something don't do it. But just because you don't like something why should it effect what others do. Pretty simple if you ask me, and you did.
 

That may be true, but at the same time there are quite a few people who don't grow up and take things out of proportion, and when this happens it is just easier to segregate the problem then hoping people will deal with it.
 

I agree that I don't have to read it if I don't want to. I usually don't read them. But they are becoming more frequent and I am all for proactiveness. Much like we had to move auctions into a subforum, perhaps there can be a sub-sub forum for the "should I" stuff. Then you will actually get the new memebers posting real questions and not just veterans parading their pin. I am all for helping new traders understand the value of their pins. But... I see a lot of senior members and people I know know the value of their pin and it seems pretty obvous they are just wanting attention. Sometimes, the same people that are doing lots of ties and trying to get more pins from people.
 
I voted "I don't really care".

The "Should I auction this pin?" threads don't bother me per se...but some of them I do feel are solely for advertisement purposes.

If you have a hard-to-find pin with a great trades/wants ratio and is of a popular character it seems like a no brainer that the auction would do well.

If the pin is more obscure, has a not-so-great trade/wants ratio, or is of a less popular character I could see wanting to ask if there is interest before auctioning, since you have to choose a winner regardless.

I have never auctioned anything, but if I did I would only want to auction something that I KNEW would do well, otherwise I would just put it in the trading forum, but that's just me.
 


Maybe you should tone it down a little and quit being so butt hurt. I see no reason why they cannot ask that question. IF you have a issue with it just don't read it.
 

And sometimes it is hard to make a decisions so you get ties and sometimes even veterans are not sure about stuff.

But again, I have no problem if you want a sub forum for it.
