Hello all!

I have a question for all of you. What do you think about starting a new collection before your current collections are even complete (or in my case, even off the ground?). Do you think its better to either change certain collections out (I.e., out with the old, in with the new?), or to keep piling collections on top of each other? I'm afraid of overwhelming myself haha. I know each person can do whatever they wish, but I would appreciate advice from other collectors. I'm still kind of new to the pin scene, at least new compared to others.

The collection I'm considering starting is going to be very small! I was watching Oliver and Company the other day, and it made me really sensitive. I just lost one of my orange cats, Biscuit, about a year ago. And now my other orange cat Bouncer is slowly deteriorating as well (she can't eat or drink, and we are having to giver her fluids via IV). I obtained Biscuit by adopting him/finding him on the side of the road, and watching Oliver in the box really made me sentimental. I got Bouncer from the pound, but I will never forget the day I picked her out (she was different than all of her brothers and sisters, and I felt bad for her! lol). I don't know if its that Oliver is orange, or that Jenny reminds me of myself when I was little...but I just all of the sudden want to collect it! I think I'm being reasonable because I only want to collect pin with Jenny and Oliver on them (like the Japan 100 years of magic pin), and ones of Oliver just by himself. There aren't many of these.

Anyways that was too long. What do you guys think? Am I crazy? Is this a moment of madness? Or have many of you contemplated picking up more and more collections to start over time? Has anyone done this and advises against it?

Thanks for viewing! Sorry if anything doesn't make too much sense, I've been very stressed this week and have lost the ability to type coherent sentences :wiggle:

Hi, Love.

I'm pretty sure it's just my OCD and diehard competist personality, but I have to finish one major collection before I move onto the next. It's a Catch-22 for me - I find that I am more willing to spend extra money on getting that ONE pin rather than trying to run around like a crazy and complete multiple sets, which I find would be more expensive. But it requires a tremendous amount of patience and definitely some frustration when you can't find the last few that you need. I considered starting Brave. I considered starting a Beauty and the Beast or Sleeping Beauty collection, but then I realized that my Tangled collection means the world to me and I've invested so much emotion, time and energy (and oh my God, money) into this collection that I don't want to change focus. I want it to be my big thing. And what's great is that when new pins come out, I don't feel as terrible spending more money on them since it's truly the only thing I collect and I don't have to split my attention between multiple series.

I do have a small collection of Princess series pins going, but I think after I finish my swirl pins, I'll just stick with just the new-design Princesses, since I love the refreshed designs so much.

Having said that --

I'm all about sentimental collections, obviously. Haha. I love the idea of starting an Oliver and Company collection because of how meaningful it is to you and your babycats. I also don't believe there's an extensive catalogue of Oliver and Company pins, and I'd be surprised if they went up in value due to the popularity of the film, so it probably would be a very attainable collection for you to move laterally into. I think you should go for it! :3

:) I'm not a completist and I never will be. Why would I want ALL pins from a certain collection, when not ALL pins are nice? My newest collections are Frankenweenie and Wreck-it Ralph. I absolutely loved both of these films, so I felt the need to start collecting them. I loved Tangled too, but I was oddly satisfied by just having a few Tangled pins in my possession, without having to collect the film as a whole. I just think that you should do whatever is right for you, and not worry about what other people are doing.

Also, if you've only just started a certain collection, there's no harm in stopping it. :p I used to collect the Blue Fairy and Monstro from Pinocchio, Bruce from Finding Nemo, sharks in general and the Big Bad Wolf! I eventually decided to take pins featuring them off my Wants, but I kept most of the pins from those collections as they still had great sentimental value.

I kind of maxed out what's semi-easy or that i want to get for Star Tours, Space Mountain, Rocket to the moon, flying saucers, astro orbiter, etc. So I started in a completely new genre of Princesses and Tink's for my wife. There are TONS from that genre and I don't think I'll ever be a completist for those.

I say...go for it! I too collect Oliver and co. It isn't a big collection...and there are some cute pins... not too pricy except.the le100 Oliver I have been.looking for. Good luck whatever you decide

While I'm still green to trading, I think having a few different collections is fine. For instance, SitS is my major focus, but those pins come slowly (and will eventually peter out to maybe one very few months). So I'm building up some villain collections (Jafar and Scar) on the side. But I also think there's a point where you have to know your limits. XD

I say if pins with orange cats hit a heart string then collect them. If you want to continue what you are currently collecting then do it. There is no time limit for collecting pins. I recently started collecting certain Snow White pins because my Mother loves them and I know one day she will no longer be with us so I wanted some special pins that I had took the time to get to remind me of her. I will probably get her entire collection when that sad day comes but I still wanted some that I got in memory of her. I hope that doesn't make me sound strange or morbid or anything. Point is I have only been collecting them for a little while and we still collect everything else we like too. I also noticed my emphasis changes. For a while I wanted Pirate pins, then we decided to start a Maleficent as a dragon with Briar Rose and the fairies thrown in now and again, Then I started really liking the Old Hag. I know, I seem to like the darker pins best... LOL. We really just get what appeals to us most at the time. Some mini collections we complete and some we only get certain characters in. When it comes to pins my motto is... follow your heart, get what speaks to you and those will always be special no matter who is on them!

Personally, I have two sort of difficult collections to complete and then a few that are a bit easier. I think it's a good idea to have a variation of interests when collecting so you don't drive yourself nuts trying to complete one collection.

Sentimental collections or even individual pins are never a bad idea. I don't collect Mickey Mouse and I'm not fond of the Vinylmation designs but I have the one where Mickey looks like one of the floats from the old Main Street Electrical Parade, simply because that was one of my favorite parts of visiting Disneyland as a kid. Lots of good memories attached to it so I wanted one pin that represented it.

If you wanted to, you could collect individual pins of Oliver for one of your kitties and maybe individual pins of...is it Toulouse? The orange brother from the Aristocats, for your other kitty.

I'd say the main advantage to diversifying a collection is that you have less of a chance of hitting a wall where you just can't find anything that matches your collection. With a diversified collection, there's a greater chance of finding fits to the various collections.

The downside, of course, is that more collections equals more money. I guess you have to find the right balance for you.

Oh my gosh. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO guilty of doing this... when I first started collecting, I was really set on Jasmine/Aladdin ONLY. Then I realised I adore Mulan just as much, and added her... Ariel and Rapunzel followed suit. I would like to be a completist of Aladdin, Mulan, and Tangled (LOL)...

Then came all the Princesses (and all the pin sets they are in), Mardi/Parti Gras, PODMs (), Brave (wanna complete this movie!), NBC, Peter Pan and Frankenweenie, with a little bit of Esmeralda and Djali, Lady and the Tramp, and others thrown into the mix... I can't even remember everything I collect!

I just know that for some collections I don't even have a single pin of that genre yet  I am going out of control! :eek2: It would be easier to say what I DON'T collect... I love anything that catches my fancy, too. I say whatever you would like to own, add it to your wants... there's no harm in that, right? ;) <3

So I started with Aladdin because it's like my favorite thing in the world, but then I thought... You know, I REALLY like the Aristocats! So I started Aristocats! And then I was like, well, Jessica was my role model growing up (oh lawd what does that say about me?) and then I started getting more Jessicas. THEN I found out Kingdom Hearts Existed and OH MAN I just need me some of those! And hey, Goofy is the COOLEST bro ever, and nobody likes him so Pins are easy to get, and my sister and my boyfriend LOVE tangled so I need some of those, And then Wreck It Ralph Came out, and suddenly there were Treasure Planet pins in my book and afdklsfgha;sldfj;asdbghauoedjisfldfjka

SO yeah, I've branched out a bit. But I'm kind of happy I did. Sometimes I get stuck in my Aladdin Collecting. There's very few times now, where I can get a new Aladdin pin because I have SO many and the ones I want are harder and harder to get, so it's nice having other things I can trade for C: Also sentimental pins are awesome. I have an TLM PODM only because of some memories I have with my mother watching the film when it was re-released in theaters back in the 90's. Do I collect TLM? Nope.

+1 I feel like I pick up a new collection every month. When I was set collecting only one thing, it seemed like I didn't trade as much so that's why I started to collect other things like Princesses. Now, when I go to PTN & stuff I do a lot more trading because I have more to find! My boyfriend only collected Lion King so there were times when he didn't do a single trade because no one had that to trade. Now, he picked up Nemo but it's still a little hard. So as long as you're not going overboard and buying a bunch of pins for every collection you have, you won't feel overwhelmed.

I have 2 collections. UP (and I am not a completest) and "movies/characters/pins I (and the hubs and the kids) love"...although I guess my UP collection falls under that category too. :) This way we can collect whatever suits us right then!

I'm definitely not a completist! (But I am saying this after only a few months of collecting so... that might change.) But my current mentality is more along the lines of I want to get all the pins that I find cute/funny/awesome, and that's already pretty daunting!! I'm pretty obsessive, so I've been shying away from getting into other collections, just because I know I could easily go nuts trying to get everything all at once, and then go broke on accident T_T

I totally understand the sentimental reasons. For me it is going to try to get all the pins that have to do with Geri's Game which for right now is only 2 pins ever made. The whole cartoon reminds me of my Great Grandfather who passed away several years ago. The whole big smile at the very end is just like his. I just traded for one of the pins with Aragorn- the DSF one. Still looking for the other pin though... :)

Like Merlin, I'm just getting into the whole pin scene, so take what I say with a grain of salt. When I first started, I was collecting everything that I thought was "cool", but it didn't take long for me to realize that was insane. I narrowed it down to 5 and then 2 collections (Mary Poppins and Brave). However, one of the 5 that did not make the cut to the final two is Maleficent and I think she is just the perfect villain (not to mention she's a freaking Dragon!!). She's not one of my main focus, but I will keep my eye out and pick up a pin or two every once in a while because I just find her awesome.

So....I say go for it! If it's within your financial means and it hits a certain emotional string, make your collection that much bigger and better.

I'm half completist and half not. I love DSF Marquees and Opening Day pins for movies but I just cannot afford or have good enough pins to trade for older marquees or opening day pins. I decided just to move forward with purchasing the new releases of these.

But on the other hand I love some of the new series that have come out espically for the Pin of the Month for 2013 from DLR and WDW. Since those are new and only 12, I hope to complete those sets.

But at the end of the day, it's really up to you on how you want to build your collection with your love of the hobby. I think many people have said there are no set rules for pin collecting except to stay happy.

hi: I will say that if you have a friend that live close to the parks or you really have lots of money , go for it! If not, wait and start collecting from a new or future movie. By my experience going back to old movies is worst (more expensive) that going forward.

Never be afraid to start a new collection, especially when you have a great reason for it!!! DO IT!!!

To start you off pm me your address and I will send you this little beauty

I think it is a great thing to do! I started off only collecting Tangled... but that is SO hard... so I started collecting Brave, and I have been going back and forth collecting those pins and buying when I can... now I am gradually collecting Monsters Inc and Pixie Hollow Fairies. I don't see a problem with having more than one collection! If you want to start collecting something new it doesn't mean you have to get ALL the pins at once! or- all of the pins in general. Just try to get the ones that mean the most to you at first, then the other hard to get ones will come when the time is right! :D

I started off wanting to collect all the Brave pins since the movie means so much to me. I ended up hating 90% of the Brave pins (go figure). So I kept the two pins I originally bought and traded the rest. I was going to collect all of the princesses but I really only care about the first 6. I am a historian so I love Snow White for its historical significances and the fact I fell in love with the movie when I watched it as an adult. It has quickly become my favorite Disney movie. I also fell in love with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty as an adult so I've tried to grow my "classic princess" collection. I ended up starting to collect Belle, Ariel, and Jasmine pins right after I started my Brave collection because I love those princesses so much. I now only collect the 6 original princesses but Snow White is becoming my main collection with Ariel coming in second place. So, yes I think you should collect the Oliver and Jenny pins.

I think having a diversity of collections is a lot more realistic than focusing on a narrow subject in the long run..

Ive been collecting for a (very) long time and had I focused on one subject for the most part I'd be frustrated and or done with collecting since quiet a few of my earlier collections are complete or pardon the expression 'waiting for people to die and have their collections sold' in order to get the 1 or 2 pins I'm missing for a reasonable price (I REFUSE to spend more than 40 bucks on a single pin)

I've rarely collected anything that is 'overwhelmingly popular' like Princesses, Mansion, Villians or Alice so some of my views can be taken with a grain of salt

Each of my collections has a piece of my interests or part of my history and most started out with one random pin- then branched to easy to find pins and grew from there. Some collections grow quickly others add maybe a pin a year (Tarzan & Lilo don't get much love now days) 90% of the pins on my wants list I will never find at a trade night yet I always trade for dozens upon dozens of pins I never knew I needed before..

13 years ago I never imagined I'd be collecting Animal Kingdom, California Adventure or Minnie pins (because originally I was dead set to stay with my original theme) yet today I found pins for those collections I never knew existed that had I stuck to my main theme I'd never have glanced their way before and missed out on some really neat pins..

Branch out- You'll prob be very happy that you did (and hopefully will always be able to find pins to trade for) and if not you can always trade them off again in the future..
