The first individual pin I had was this:

Pin 7368: DLRP - Big Thunder Mountain (Error)

But techhhnically my first pins were the ones in this starter lanyard set, no official release date on pinpics but it was out when I visited Paris and I know the above pin was recalled after a couple of days maximum so I must've gotten my first pins approx 6th October 2001 When I was only 10 years old ^_^

This set:

Pin 13371: DLRP - Pin Trading Starter Kit (Lanyard & 4 Pins)

I still have the lanyard (2 of them in fact) and one each of the Mickey and Minnie's

Pin 81328: Disney Store Europe - Aristocats Kittens

This was my first pin I bought from the Disney Store when I first decided to start collecting pins but got a little side tracked with life :/

I have no idea where it is now

Technically my first pins were from the Virtual Magic Kingdom Pin Card Collection. I bought them only because the cards they came on had codes that gave you virtual items to play with in the game. But one day when the seller I was purchasing them from also had pin # 56284, and I fell in love with it! I count that as my "official" first pin because that's the one that I bought because I liked it, and not for the code on the card.

^ This was the first one I bought when I was in WDW this past November. I was looking for a Mary Poppins pin, but this guy jumped into my hand. I've kind of gone a little crazy in the 2 months since then...

My first pin was

Pin 1188: Disneyland - 30th Anniversary - Bear Country

They handed them out as you entered the park.
What got me trading was the Countdown to the Millennium pins that were released in 1999.
Those pins were so popular it spread to the parks.
WDW was first and then on Feb 14, 2000 pin trading officially started at DL
Was anybody else there with me on day one?

My first pins were in a Nightmare Before Christmas starter set that came with a lanyard. I ended up trading all of them off except Oogie Boogie because, well...how can you trade Boogie?
